Great place that helps me work out every day I want to. Friendly workers there, and the machines are all clean and well-placed. Nicely light (even though the pull up are could be in a better location.) Always feel safe when I go there at night. Will probably keep going for as long as I live in NOLA more

Editorial review from Citysearch 7/23/2012

Member for 6 years. Never had a problem with my billing. Several of my friends, coworkers, and relatives have been members of the gym and never had a problem cancelling their memberships when they moved. The gym has A LOT to offer. Its the best deal in town for $49 per month (they have never increased to cost of membership in the 6 years I have been a member). They offer free parking, classes, towel service, lockers and month to month contracts with no penalty to cancel and no enrollment fees. I cancelled my membership when I left NOLA for grad school with no problems or fees and signed back up when I moved back(at the same price). My friend is a teacher and they gave her a discount rate of $39 per month. They do that for teachers, students, and im pretty sure for some other groups. She loves the variety of free classes and the ladies only workout area they have. Although I havnt done any of the classes I LOVE the free weight room they have downstairs. They have dumbbells that go up to about 160/165lbs. The staff is always very friendly and honest and they always smile when you come in. The gym is very clean and there is someone there to help you all the time. Ive even had the front desk people spot me a couple times. They have plenty of equipment for whatever your workout needs are. The layout, despite being 2 floors, gives plenty of room to workout. They have squat racks, benches, and space to deadlift. more

Ripoff! 5/4/2012

I joined this club because it was cheaper than many other clubs and because they offered month-to-month membership which was appealing because most clubs require a one year contract. But it's NOT WORTH IT. I wish I had known about this site before joining! The other reviews are true! They will keep charging your credit card after you have canceled. Avoid like the plague. more

Friendly staff and great bargain 6/13/2011

I really like this gym. I don't understand any of the hate floating around because I joined during college, cancelled my membership, moved back here earlier this year, and renewed my membership... all with no hassle or problem or any of these supposed hidden fees. But enough negativity, the gym is always clean. The staff are super-friendly. The boot camp thing they do is extra charge (but an amazing workout) and all the other classes are free. Also I joined with my girlfriend and we got a couple discount that I think you can get with even just a roommate. more

They'll keep charging your credit card after you cancel! 4/2/2011

I initially joined this gym because they offer month to month memberships whereas most gyms require a one year contract. After being a loyal member for almost a year, I started grad school and I decided to just go to the gym on campus. I specifically told a staff member to cancel my membership. Well to my surprise, they kept on billing me for the next two months. I can see why some people don't believe us. It is a fairly nice gym. To all the people who don't believe us, wait till you try to cancel your membership. They don't try to screw you over until AFTER you've left. more

I don't know who is writing negative reviews about this gym but they're crazy. I live between New York and New Orleans and have been to A LOT of gyms and this is by far the best. The price is right, the facilities are clean and the staff is incredibly friendly. The class variety is unlike any other gym in New Orleans - there are so many different Cardio classes that you can take advantage of - Hip Hop Dance, Kick Boxing, Circuit Training, Spin, and more which are all INCLUDED in your already inexpensive membership. I've been working with a personal trainer and have lost almost 40 pounds in three months which is all because of her and the motivation that I receive from the people at the gym. I looked at multiple other gyms and this is by far the best. If you're shopping around, DON'T. Just got to St. Charles Avenue Athletic Club - you won't regret it. There is so much offered it's hard not to want to get in shape. more

GYM IS AWESOME!!! 8/14/2010

First i want to say that whoever writes those negetive nasty reviews most likeley have some personal agenda. more

have been a member for years!!! 8/11/2010

I have been a member at St Charles ave. athletic club for years and never have i ran in to anything even remotely close to what some of you writing on here. They have very flexible policies and maybe some of you on here taken advantage of them? As far as the equipment in my opinion they have the best variety of free weights and machines, dumbells go up to 200lbs, I think that would satisfy any lifter. Also the newly added powerlifting room is off the hook!!! What gym in town offers free quality classes, like an hour and a half yoga/pilates class wich i just adore. So my theory is that maybe it is you who screwed up and not them... more

As bad as they say 7/6/2010

I joined St. Charles Avenue Athletic Club on a month-by-month basis & authorized them to directly charge my Chase credit card monthly. About a month before moving from the neighborhood, I asked to cancel my membership. The staff at the front desk told me he would cancel the membership effective the end of that month. When I asked if I could do something in writing, he told me no, it was already taken care of. For the past three months, they have repeatedly told me that it is going to be taken care of. But each month I get charged. I contacted Chase, which is disputing the charges, and ultimately alerted the Better Business Bureau. I called SCAAC to warn them about the report to the BBB, and was offered 1/2 of my money back for the past three months, after I had already cancelled. They don't deserve a cent of that money or yours! Pay a little more for one of the newer gyms on Magazine Street, and save yourself the hassle! Pros: Convenient location Cons: Continue billing after you've cancelled your membership more

Owner is dishonest!!! 1/15/2010

The facility is decent and is adequately equipped and they offer free classes such as spinning and yoga. Some of the staff at the front desk were a bit on the snotty side but the trainers and class instructors (ie Erica, Mike, Helen, Tanzy, etc) were friendly and helpful. However, I do NOT recommend this gym because the owner is greedy and dishonest. I personally asked the owner to cancel my membership and he smiled and appeared to oblige. I watched as he pull up my record on the computer and then he clicked his mouse a couple of times and said, ""okay it's done."" I asked him when the cancellation would be effective and he specifically said June 12. Then I notice two months later that he was STILL billing me! I called the gym and explained the situation to the staff member who answered the phone. At first I was thinking it was just a silly mistake. The employee went to talk to the owner and relayed the message to me, which was, ""He says that you told him you were thinking about canceling your membership but you weren't sure."" That is COMPLETE BS. I clearly told him I wanted to cancel my membership and he even verbally told me the date that my cancellation would take effect (June 12). He KNEW that I canceled my membership and he continued to bill me and he made up that stupid LIE to cover his tracks. Please do NOT support DISHONEST business owners. And Claire87, you seem to have some reading comprehension problems. Anne8 did not say she was taking antidepressants. She said it was either antidepressants or the gym and she obviously chose the gym. And even if she was taking antidepressants you shouldn't be using that against. her. Way to go for discriminating against people who are (allegedly or truly) mentally ill. Edited to add: Lol, I was just scrolling down to read the rest of the review and I discovered that one of my ex-roommates also wrote a review complaining about the EXACT same thing! I was surprised yet not surprised. What does THAT tell you about this establishment? Pros: The class instructors were friendly Cons: Continues to bill you after you cancel membership! more

Above average gym--discriminatory 11/24/2009

In general, I had a great experience with this gym. The facilities were exceptional and the staff were friendly overall. The amentities were a bonus. Unfortunately, I believe that this is a discriminatory club. Pros: Great facilities Cons: Legal does not equate to righteousness more

Great value and location 10/22/2009

Contrary to the other commenters, I've found the staff and owner to be plenty friendly. The club is clean, well-equipped, open long hours and in a convenient location with parking. The main gym has lots of equipment as well as a separate area for women. The biggest plus for me is free classes, including yoga, Pilates, step, spin and weight-lifting. There are trainers willing to help put together a program or work with you over several weeks or months. Cost of membership is very reasonable, especially if you take into consideration the free classes. Pros: Lots of classes, equipment, never crowded Cons: no pool more

Same issue others have complained about... 8/15/2009

I was a member of this gym for about a year. I liked their late hours and found the staff very friendly. But then I left, to go to another gym that's closer to my apartment (NOAC). Another friend of mine also left St. Charles to go to NOAC, and they kept billing his card for several months even after telling him they'd canceled his membership. When he tried to talk about this with the owner, the owner was rude and completely unhelpful. It seems this is common practice based on the other reviews here, so even though my experience there was mostly good, I'll never consider going back. Pros: friendly staff, good hours Cons: small, dishonest in billing practices more

Can't Complain 7/19/2009

Pros: I love this gym because it's in a great location, a short 3 minute ride from where I live. They have a ladies-only area, there's a tanning salon next door, they have a great towel service that are always fluffy, warm and smell great; they have a special rate for couples, and the treadmills have their own TV set in the screen. Cons: the staff and the manager are not the most friendly people in the world, but it's not like I care that much. In other gym's I've been I've had my metabolism test and routine given for free, but they don't offer that. Their metabolism test is $65 and each training session is $40. I just prefer to not pay that, and follow the routine I had in my previous gym. They close early in the weekends, and I do most of my workout at night. Pros: Towel Service, Parking Lot Cons: Management & Staff more

Do not want to ever join this Gym. 5/30/2009

Its is terrible to hear this things about a place that is close to me and not to be able to go /due the bad reviews. Pros: It would have been close to my home. Cons: Bad Reviews more

BEST GYM EVER!! 5/29/2009

Do not listen to Anna8. She obviously has psycological issues considering she is taking anti-depressants. I have been a member at this gym for years and the staff and management are AWESOME. The gym is IMPECCABLE. Do not take advice from one person who clearly has an issue. Go to the gym itself and I GUARANTEE you will LOVE it. I have never had any problems here and the RATES are UNBEATABLE. Pros: awesome staff, convienient, well maintained, clean Cons: none. more

Excellent Staff and Facility, Difficult Management 5/28/2009

I've been a member of this gym since November 2008. Let me tell you something, people: it is really up to y'all to get your behinds to a gym and work out because at least 50% of your success is your own commitment. However, while you are making progress and enjoy being a gym member, someone helps himself to your credit card... Pros: excellent staff, location, equipment Cons: management more

experience at a new gym 4/20/2009

Being new in town, I tried St.Charles Ave. Athletic Club, because it's close to where I live.I must admit that I was put off by the negative reviews, but I also like to think & develope my own feelings about this gym .Based on my one-day visit,I'll definitely get a membership here.Oh by the way, I'll be training with the""Elderly Bullying Trainer."" maybe I'LL look like her after a year's worth of training!!!! Pros: great staff, knowelgeable training staff Cons: more cardio classes!!!!!!! more

Nice Facility, Poor Service 2/10/2009

The equipment in the gym was nice, but being charged for the extra 5 months was not worth it. As other members have said, trying to cancel is difficult. I canceled with the club, where they lost the record of my cancellation and continued to charge my account. I would advise you avoid this club and save yourself the hassle... and the money! Pros: equipment Cons: lost record of cancellation and continued charging account more

At the moment, I have tried to freeze my account for a few months for work however they have charged my account and the staff has been very rude and arrogant towards me. I am debating to cancel my membership due to the staff and their atttitude. more
