SRIPRAHAI 6/18/2006

I enjoy eating Thai food. That is why when I'm in the neighborhood I try to stop by. The thai dishes are delicious such as the noodles or spicy chicken. The owners have recently enlarged the place so now that they do more business it get packed more so it's harder to get a seat. The food is worth the crowding though and you can have a good meal for under $10 dollars. more

Not all that Authentic Thai - I was not impressed at all and the food was a disappointment. 4/8/2006

I rushed here with my friends to try the new hot grub. We left with with an unfulfilled feeling that usually a good thai coconut soup would satisfy. I have had authentic thai food from friends who's grandmother had cooked for hours in the kitchen and I have to say it was bland for what it was advertised for. The spicy food was surface spicy, which means it wasn't that nice cooked in flavor but more shaken on top kind of flavor. The noodles were a bit over cooked and the most flavorful dishes were seriously lacking that delicious zing to your taste buds. You cant mess up thai iced tea or rice too much so you really have to concentrate on how the meat is cooked and how they were spiced. Absolutely, a real disappointment and I would not make my way in that direction anytime soon. Would not recommend to anyone looking for real thai food. more

Great Thai food 8/18/2005

A family owned business that makes great authentic Thai food. Their coconut rice is awesome and thai ice tea is amazing. Most of their foods are spicy so if you want to be on the safe side, pad thai is your best bet for anything non-spicy. The only down side to the restaurant is they closed one day of the week on a weekday and since it is family owned if they go on a family vacation, they are closed. more

Authentic Thai at its best 10/14/2004

It's a great restaurant, probably the best Thai in NYC, with the tastiest, if not cheapest meals -- no tailoring to "American tastebuds." They spice up your order based on your tolerance level of fiery hotness: mild, medium, hot! I liked how the food is never overwhelming -- a nice balance of flavor and spices. Authentic.

For the first timer, or the confused, don't worry, they offer picture menus of all their dishes. The all Thai staff is friendly, helpful but can seem rushed. Orders come fast.

Highly recommend the papaya salad, duck salad, soft shell crab with fresh, shredded mangos, masaman curry, beef noodle with onions, coconut rice and their Thai iced teas (though it can be on the overly sweet side).

For the dessert lover, they offer plenty of other types of desserts -- all showcased in the back of the restaurant by the register. Shelves of rice cakes, banana leaved wrapped goodies, flour cakes, custards, eye popping stuff. But a word of warning, some of the faves, like the sweet-rice stuffed with bananas go fast: so best to reserve one ahead of time.

Seating wise, inside, it's not the prettiest or most romantic place: fluorescent light, hard, plastic chairs, cheap on the decor but the food totally makes up for it. They even have a back outdoor garden area.

A bit of a commute, but totally worth it.

  • Sripraphai in Woodside deserves its reputation as the best Thai restaurant in New York City. Its menu ranges way beyond the standard Thai eatery, offering bold, authentic Thai flavors. If you love Thai food, this is the place to go. If you don't get Thai food, this is the place to go. You owe yourself a short trip on the 7 subway to this humble, great restaurant.
Once a local hole-in-the-wall, Sripraphai became a more welcoming Ikea-decorated space thanks to a 2004 renovation. The food didn't lose any of its luster (or spice), but you can now enjoy your fried watercress salad and cold beer in a sunny backyard garden.
