Super place to spend a day. 10/4/2006

Ever looking for something to do with the family?? Well, go to Space Farms, Sussex NJ. http://www.spacefarms.com/ I had no idea what to expect when we went last year but much to my surprise it was like a huge zoo. Not your ordinary zoo, with small cages and a few critters, but they had all types of animals imaginable, more than 500 animals of 100 different species, and in large habitats. Granted, nothing matches the wild when it comes to animals, ie. tigers, lions, elephants but what Space Farms has is quite comparable. I was very happy to see that these wild animals had space to roam and they were well taken care of. (We watched feedings of the big cats). They have a museum which contains 50,000+ artifacts, including antique cars, motorcycles, farm tools, early American tools, toys, clocks, tractors, horse drawn sleighs, and Native American artifacts. "Space Farms also has the second largest privately owned collection of antique firearms in the United States"(exerpt taken from website), and a small snack bar/restaurant for your eating needs. The admission price is also very reasonable. I enjoyed it thoroughly. (Some of the pics I have posted are from Space Farms too.) Highly recommend! more

Space Farms Zoo & Museum 6/24/2006

Space Farms Zoo & Museum is a great way to spend a day exploring more than 100 acres of parkland in beautiful, rural Sussex, NJ. It offers a range of activities suitable for children and adults and you can even picnic on the property. The zoo at Space Farms accommodates more than 500 species of wild animals. Take a tour and see bobcats, lions, buffalo, hyenas, bears, monkeys, jaguars and more--claiming to be the world's largest collection of North American wildlife. The zoo also has a special program to restore endangered and threatened species like fallow deer, wild turkey, elk and Hokkaido bears. Walk past the gorgeous exotic parrots at the zoo and you're likely to hear "get over here" or "pretty bird" which takes you a little by surprise. The Museum part of the property contains 11 buildings of 100,000 items representing American history. This Americana collection includes among other things, antique cars and motorcycles, old farm machinery, an Eskimo exhibit, blacksmithing shop and a miniature circus--fascinating stuff. The Farms are open daily May through the end of October from 9 to 5. Group rates are available for more than 20 people. Good day trip. more
