Editorial review from Citysearch 9/25/2012

When I first started taking my poms there in 2005 the service was great. I used them for both grooming and boarding at times. In late 2007, I had a disagrement with the owner over the charge for the boarding and didn't go back. Within a year that manager was gone. I have since then taken my other dog and the grooming and customer service is just not the same anymore. more

Very unhappy with the treatment and 12/26/2011

Very unhappy with the treatment and result of my groomed cat. Toe nails torn out and smells like a scented candle, and fur still damp when picked up. Pissed off barely begins to describe my dissatisfaction. Now I have to take my cat to the vet for the torn out claws. They will get the vet bill if there is infection! more

Started out good...but not going back 8/4/2010

We started taking one of our labs there a few years ago for grooming. It was great. He loved being there and always came home happy and looking great. Eventually we got another dog and started sending both to the groomer. Over the past few years, the quality has gotten very poor, my dogs would come home with their pads not shaved and nails not trimmed. Then they said we had to request to have them done, which was never the case before. When i started making sure that they were getting trimmed, they would come home with bloody paws. My husband took them once to just get their nails trimmed and pads shaved and they told us it would be $20 per dog! The quality of work and care for my dogs there is terrible! I will not be bringing them back ever. more

I dropped off my dog as soon as they opened, when I didn't get a call late in the afternoon to say she was done, I stopped by anyway around 3:00 and they hadn't even started her. They did good work, but very unfair to keep a dog cooped up all day waiting to be groomed. I was not happy about that at all. Neither was my dog. Pros: Good work Cons: Took all day more

hurt my dogs 1/14/2009

I took my two poodles in for grooming. After putting them in my car I noticed stains all over the seat. They had trimmed their nails too short. I guess that's why they were crying so long after I picked them up. I called to let the groomer know. She was indifferent. Poor customer service. I won't go back. Pros: Terrible service. Poor customer service. Cons: Location more

Wonderful Service 12/28/2008

I had to go out of town for a few days and usually I leave my dog with friends, but as it was the holidays no one was available to watch her. I found Southgate here on Citysearch and decided to give it a try. I had called a few of the more expensive/boutique doggy day care type places in Portland and they were all booked. I was nervous since my dog, who is 2 and a half, had never been boarded in a kennel before. Southgate offers large ""family"" kennels for dog families so my roommates and I reserved one for our three dogs. At $17.50 per dog, per day, it was a bargain. I believe their individual kennels go for $20 dog/day. Many of the other places I looked into charge upwards of $35/day. The staff was nothing but helpful, friendly, and efficient. They reassured me about boarding my dog for the first time and when I called to check on her halfway through her stay they gave me an update and reassured me again. They genuinely seem to enjoy and care about the dogs, and it shows in their work. The location itself lacks the polish of boutique-type doggie daycares in Portland proper, but they provide excellent care to the animals and that is what really matters. The dogs are let out multiple times a day for playtime and their kennels are cleaned daily. I am glad to know there is a caring kennel where I can leave my dog and feel confident that she is being well taken care of. I will definitely use Southgate again! Pros: Friendly, excellent care for the animals more

The best I have found. 9/30/2008

The staff know my pets by name and my pets are always energetic and happy when I come to pick them up. I have taken my dogs to other kennels where they are dehydrated and scared from their stay, but have never experienced this at Southgate. My only complaint is that Southgate doesn't provide a breakdown of charges when you pay, and I have been overcharged $10 on one occasion. Once I called the staff, they were happy to fix the error, but it would be nice if the error never occurred. Overall, my pets are always happy there, which matters to me most. more

We just love leaving our two dogs there. In fact, whenever we first enter the door our dogs run towards the back. We have left our dogs for boarding for up to a week at a time and they always come home happy and clean.\r \r I would recommend this place to others. We have boarded our dogs there for several years. Pros: Prompt service and direct answers more

Excellent with my Westie 8/21/2008

We have been using Southgate for years. The cut is always right on. Always get excellent customer service and she even allows early drop off in the morning so I can get to work on time. We love the place! Pros: Very clean and tidy...good parking more

Gives wrong info and prices 3/14/2008

I have used this groomer twice, each time I have been quoted a price and when I pick the girls up I have to pay more than quoted. The last time I was told it would be $35-$40 per dog.... when I picked them up it was $50 per dog. I am given the excuse of ""well, I don't know why she quoted you that price, that is for a cocker spaniel."" I don't believe I will be back, it does not seem that the right hand knows what the left hand is doing and nothing is EVER as they tell you it will be. Pros: Proximity Cons: Over priced.... over quote. more

Simple cuts then yes complicated cuts beware 8/13/2007

Our family has been using this grooming place for about one year for our two dogs. As far as our German Shepherd they are great at simple cuts. Our Miniture Schnauzer got his cut and is bald and the haircut is choppy. It would appear the more complicated cuts are not their expertise. If you do go here demand to see the cut first before paying because they'll lie to your face until you pay. Pros: Great at simple cuts usually can get you in within the week Cons: Complicated cuts are not their expertise more

Happy dog after boarding! 11/22/2005

I have only boarded my dog there but she has always come home happy, fed and watered (never smelling like a kennel either!) Several other places I have taken her to have either been cold or she came home thirsty and nervous. I would recommend this place to anyone for boarding, especially if you have a small dog that likes other dogs. more

Poor customer service 8/7/2005

I had really bad customer service when I had my dog groomed here. I gave them extra time to groom my dog, they put me off till the end of the day, were late and did not follow my instructions for grooming my dog. They then charged me full price. I can't recommend them!! more
