Rudest staff EVER. 1/11/2008

I went here with a large group of friends on a Sat. night for a birthday party. All of us paid for open bar, and it was a pretty good deal... but SO not worth it considering the way I was treated by the bartenders there. I'm a pretty low-key person at bars, and so are the people I was with. No special requests, we were all patient, b/c we understood it was crowded, etc. Plus, we all tipped ) for each drink. \r \r Not only did the bartenders take FOREVER with orders, but one in particular tried to be all fancy, flipping glasses around, and broke them several times in front of us, messed tons of drinks, acted extremely arrogant and rude, and decided it was necessary to get in my face (I'm a female, so yeah, not cool), sneer at me, and tell me (after I had tipped him for every drink mind you) that ""tip is not included with open bar."" \r \r To avoid ranting on forever, I'll just say that more completely inappropriate comments were made throughout the night, and I felt really threatened. I reported this someone else who worked there, who kicked him out, but about an hour later he was back behind the bar spouting out more insults at not only me, but others I was with. Terrible. I've worked in the industry, and you just don't treat people like that - ESPECIALLY when they haven't done anything to warrant it.\r \r On top of that, it was really cramped, not a fun or very pleasant scene. If you're a person who appreciates human decency, avoid this place like the plague. Pros: not too expensive Cons: HORRIBLE staff & atmosphere more

Avoid if you want to keep your belongings 9/27/2007

This is my first time writing a review on Citysearch but I feel I should warn people about this place. I went to Society for a birthday party last Friday night. The bartenders were friendly and the DJ played decent music, however it was nothing special compared to some of the other establishments in the area. Unfortunately, I could not find my jacket as I was leaving, so I left it and called the bar the next day to ask if anyone had happened to find it. After a quick check, the bartender or manager, Im not sure who, told me that they did have the jacket but that I should come in to retrieve it sooner rather than later. I told him that I could not make it that day (Saturday) but that I would be in first thing in the afternoon on Sunday. When I arrived just after opening on Sunday, I was told that my jacket could no longer be found, and that I should have come in ASAP because ""things have a way of disappearing"" there. This leads me to believe that not only did a Society employee steal my jacket (it was last seen behind the DJ booth, according to the employee I talked to), but that theft is an ongoing problem at this particular establishment. Given that there are numerous other honest places within a stones throw of Society, I would recommend trying one of those before ever considering this place again. more

good place to pop in 8/21/2007

had a bday party here. good mix of music. 80's, hip hop etc.. open bar. a little on the small side. We were not allowed to take advantage of the outdoor area since we had open bar. They also closed the outside after they finished serving dinner. Pros: Music, Good prices for open bar Cons: Small, could not use the outside area more

Diamond in the Village 7/14/2007

The same cannot be said for any of the establishments along Bleecker Street-Row or in the near-by west village. Just a short walk from the subway, I am more than please with our experience this past Friday at Society. \r \r Our party of 12 was very please with our experience. The allures of Society Bar and Restaurant are varied - aesthetically appealing, comfortable and personally gratifying. For starters, Society?s sizable open-air deck is lined with plush foliage and rolling ivy and is equipped with umbrellas and soft lighting, an ambiance that provided our group the perfect opportunity to catch-up with one another. Well-done! \r \r Inside, the bar-restaurant is equally as spacious and nicely shaped, equipped instead with AC and live DJ. Our waitress was kind and expedient, the shrimp nachos are a MUST and specialty drinks refreshing. \r \r Even the bouncer was cordial in our welcome. Sadly, not the case elsewhere.\r \r At 1:00 am sharp, we made our transition from the deck to the dance floor. We rocked out until 3! The DJ set was sick.\r \r \r \r more

Great spot, great Crowd 7/12/2007

Scheduled a B-Day party for a saturday night about a month ago and was happily surpised by accomodating staff and great service. I've been frequenting on various nights since, and haven't been dissappointed yet. Some of the other reivews are a little harsh, I've never had a problem with the staff and the crowd has been a lot of fun. So far all the food has been great as well, so not sure what the negative reviews are talking about! Pros: Service, Food, Deck Cons: can get crowded more

Amazing atmosphere and outdoor space!!! 7/9/2007

I have been to Society on more then one occasion and the only thing i can say is, WOW, this place is fantastic. There is no other outdoor space like it in the city. The vibe is that of a neighborhood bar with a casual yet very hip crowd. The music is exactly what you want to hear when you want to hear it. I felt as if i was hanging out at a friends house and never wanted the night to end. The staff was friendly and attentive and I never had to look around for my waitress. Even though I live in the east village I come hear as often as i can. Pros: outdoor space music more

A Decent Patio Area Is This Dump's Only Redeeming Quality 6/1/2007

I went here on a Thursday with a group of about 8 co-workers. The weather was nice, the patio was open, and I was among friends so the stage was set for a good evening. Unfortunately things fell apart quickly. The first problem was the beer selection: lame domestics and no Heineken (only Heineken Light, ugh). They did have Stella, but the waitress failed to mention it when reciting their beers. And nothing on tap. The mixed drinks on the menu were boring and also over priced ($14 in some cases) . Our waitress, while smoking hot, was rude and catty and probably suffered from a mild to medium learning disability. After taking our drink orders, she proceed to bring them out to us TWO at a time and over the course of about 20 minutes. Apparently she never heard of a tray. What made this more absurd was the fact we were the only ones in there, literally. My vodka martini was also served in a little baby martini glass and the olives tasted like they had been marinating in bum urine. When it came time for the second round, we broke protocol and ordered from the bar. The waitress took issue with this and gave me dirty looks. Sorry lady, I'm not gonna wait a half hour for a drink. \r \r Since we were too lazy to leave, we also ordered some food. Nachos were cold and the cheese was rock hard when they came out, Guacamole and salsa were bland. They did have some tasty looking sliders that we should have got, but didn't \r \r When the place started to fill in, the patio became unnavigable. You couldn't move 3 inches without awkwardly contorting your body. Plus the trees had these little buds falling from them which got really annoying. Then a giant Stella umbrella fell on someone in our group. And finally, the tables and chairs were sticky and grimy. \r \r Don't go here, this place suuuuuucks. Pros: Patio Cons: Service, drink selection more

What's that smell? 5/4/2007

I don't understand why this place is so highly rated. I went there recently and there was a terrible smell in the outdoor area like a garbage dumpster. The tap beer listed on their website wasn't available and the bottled beer selection was limited to the most run of the mill domestic brands. Won't be going back. Pros: Outdoors. Cons: Smell, beer selection. more

nice people 4/9/2007

I love the staff here, very friendly and cute. I showed up with a couple friends on thursday. The food was great and came out quick and the drink service was on point. What really stood out though was just how nice and friendly the atmosphere was. Unfortunatly the wether wasn't cooperating so we couldnt fully utilize the putdoor patio. But according to the people there once it gets warm this is the place to be. Hopefully this hapens sooner than later. more

great spring nights 3/28/2007

I had a really hot date last night. I wanted to take here somehwere of the beaten path. Society was the place. Yesterday was a great spring night that made me forget about the winter. The outdoor deck gave us some fresh air with our amazing cocktails. The inside was dimly lit and set the perfect mood for some good conversation. Since I am a gentleman All I can say is the night ended wonderfully. I figured the least I can do is thank them. If you would like to experience the city or show someone what the city has to offer I would certainly say Society is a place to be with a good loaction and nice enviornment. Take it easy. more

Absolutely love this place! 2/7/2007

I absolutely love this place! Perfect for drinks and dinner after work. The food is good, but it's really all about the atmosphere. They play great music and the staff is exceptionally good looking and always very pleasant and friendly. The drinks are cheap, so It's a great place to pre-game on the weekends. Pros: Great Atmosphere more

Village Secrete 1/23/2007

I went here for happy hour the other day. Didnt think much, actually thought I would be going to an NYU type bar due to the location, but I was wrong. The place had a great ambiance and vibe. The bartender and cocktail waitress were friendly and did everything they could for us to enjoy ourselves. The food was really well prepared, its similar to a bar menue but the food is great-try the mac and cheese or chili. Great happy hour spot and the cocktail waitress who was gorgeous said that it gets live at night, with top industry dj's and a lively staff, the place puts on a clinc. Cant wait to go back...\r \r Pros: Great Food, Great Drinks, Great Staff Cons: I like my bartenders unattractive so I can carry on a conversation more

Coolest Lounge in the Village 12/28/2006

This is my favorite bar in the city. Although it's fairly new, I've been there 5 times already. I had been there when it was New Gate, but it wasn't half as cool. New owners, management, and a whole new look. Now it's fun. Hot guys, ladies! (Yes, my guy friends like the girls, too.) The crowd is mid 20's to mid 30's usually. The food is good. Not overpriced, always cooked well. Bar food for munching, or entrees, salads and sandwiches & wraps if you're really hungry. They do big sports promotions; I don't really watch football myself, but I like the energy in the room. And they have a killer outdoor deck. But the real fun of this place comes when the lights are low, and the music starts pumping. Good looking people everywhere, bartenders spinning things like the movie cocktail, and sometimes girls get up on the banquettes and bar and dance! So funny. Plus, they always give me and my girlfriends free shots! The vibe is consistent, but its always entertaining in a slightly new way, if that makes any sense. Anyway, I've never had a bad time...and now I'm a regular! Pros: Bartenders, vibe, music, location, deck Cons: a little off the beaten path in the village more

Great food and drink 12/27/2006

My girls and i met on thursday for happy hour last week. We had some apps and a few cocktails. The food was great as were the drinks. My ygirls and I decided this would be our new place for a bite and some drinks after work. We had a blast the crowd was good, the bartender was helpful not to mention he was really cute. Society is a great place to go!! Pros: Staff, food, drink specials more

DON'T EVER GO HERE! 12/22/2006

So here is the series of events: My friend and I go here afterwork because SUPPOSEDLY they have $4 martinis until 7pm. We go, it's really not crowded, and we decide to have a few drinks and leave. When I begin to sip my second drink, a critter (I'm not allowed to type the name of the type that crawled by...let's just say it was not a fuzzy, pleasant critter you want to see in a bar) crawls across the bar right in front of me. My friend and I look at each other and say ""let's go"". As we are asking the bartender to settle our tab, ANOTHER one crawls by. The most incredible part of this is that we tell the bartender, and his reaction is to shrug and then say ""Oh, sorry about that""....then he proceeds to charge us almost $8 per drink..... so in summary, DON'T go here. Service is lousy, it's obviously unsanitary, and there was no one there anyway. Pros: NOTHING more

great place to...party at 7/16/2006

we went on a friday night, around 130...the place was packed, small line to get in, once inside it was hot, great dj, drinks not too expensive, bartenders VERY generous with drinks. overall great place to spend a night. Pros: drinks, bartenders, social scene Cons: small dance floor more

best party spot in downtown 7/4/2006

I have been to this place twice and the party was sick. There were alot of chicks and cool guys there. The bartenders are crazy and kept giving me free drinks when the party stared to heat up. My buddies ordered alot of food and ate it in the relaxing oudoor area. They said the burgers were incredible. I will definatey be back. Pros: atmosphere, crowd, party Cons: 4am close more

Pros: deck, dj's, table service Cons: none yet more

Amazing outdoor seating!!! 6/12/2006

The food is really good here. Went to a birthday party here. Food rocked. They have mostly girls that work here and they are really hot. The crowd was cool... totally hang on the deck. It's the best I've been too in the city.......... did I mention the girls were smoking hot here. Seriously!! Pros: outdoor deck is awesome. food is awesome more

The outdoor space is awesome! It was a little crowded but not out of control. We went for happy hour and stayed all night. There was a very mixed crowd and the DJ played a good mix of hip hop, rock, 80's and pop. Can't wait to go back! Pros: Outdoor, Good looking staff, Good food/drinks Cons: Crowded, Outside closed at 11 more
