best food in the sunset 6/6/2007

a bold statement, i realize. the menu has some overlap with san tung. (they are owned by the same family.) The chicken wings are the same as are the potstickers and dumplings (though they have recently discontinued this at so's, at least for the time being). These are the best potstickers, dumplings, chicken wings, dry braised string beans I have ever had. Absolutely out of this world. Aside from the potstickers the best thing on the menu is the So Black Bean sauce noodles (not to confuse with the ""black bean sauce noodle"" - if you like the noodle dishes at san tung you absolutely must come here because there is just no comparrison this place is SO much better. as far as the review of the waitress, 1. half the wait staff is the same as san tung and 2. if you've ever been on a busy night (most nights) when the one girl is hostess, bus girl, waitress and answers the phone you can easily see how much she has to deal with. besides, it's pretty typical chinese restaurant service. not overly friendly, but not rude, and definitely very efficient. same as san tung but w/ constraint of only one person working. i just moved across town and this is the only place i will genuinely miss Pros: sauce noodles, Cons: unimpressed w/ rice plates more

SO Good...all the way!!! 5/23/2007

i really like this place!!! good noodles for a good price and we always leave stuffed with left overs to take home. also try the coroque, which are curry potato cakes, the fish, and string beans! YUMMY\r we normally go on saturday lunch time or later lunch and the service is awesome! the waitress knows who we are and she is always more than accomodating to us. she gets our drinks as soon as we sit down and always asks if we want to start with the regular appetizers.\r this is kind of like san tung, which is also really good, but the menu at so is a bit smaller. \r we go back only on saturdays just because we love the waitress and we have only seen her there on saturdays. even when she is really busy during lunch time, she is quick and efficient. she works the restaurant by herself, as far as we have seen. \r I am in the restaurant business and know what it is like to be a server, but we all think that she does her job wonderfully, sonsidering that she has very little help and at times it just gets very busy. but we are all patient.\r we LOVE So, but please bring back the dumplings and potstickers!!!! Pros: Food, Value, Service Cons: no more dumplings and potstickers more

Waitress from HELL! 5/20/2007

My in-laws were in town and we decided to try out this restaurant because the owner of Sung Tung had told me about it and told me to give it a try. We eat at Sung Tung at least once a month for the past couple years now.\r \r The minute we walked in the door, we were greeted by the waitress with a real BAD attitude. This was at 3pm on a Saturday and there was one other 3-top table almost finishing up. \r \r We asked for a table for 8 people and she simply was not friendly, like it was too much trouble for her to slide over the two tables together so that we could all sit together. A few minutes later we placed our order and I saw her bring the order to the kitchen. When she came back out to clear the table next to us, I told the waitress that it would be ok for the appetizers to come out the same time as the rest of the food. WOW - She just went beserk and just went off on us! I have NEVER experienced anything like it. I was almost speechless as it totally caught me by surprise. Needless to say, we never did get to try the food. We got up and walked out.\r \r I own a very well known restaurant in SF for the past 12 years and my in-laws are also restaurant owners in another city. We know how hard it is to be in the restaurant business and we know what servers/staff have to put up with. When we enter any restaurant, we are probably among the most polite people you can imagine. \r \r I was embarrassed to have brought my in-laws to this place. This was the first time I have ever walked out of a restaurant and it is also the first time I have written a review about any restaurant. \r \r One of the owners of SO was in the kitchen. I do not know if the waitress is an employee or also an owner but either way, she should not be allowed to deal with customers. \r \r Anyway, that's just our experience. Pros: menu is similar to sung tung Cons: the waitress more

SO... Nasty! 9/23/2006

This restaruant is really bad. The food is so flavorless and dull. We were preparing for a great meal, but got something else. We ordered a noodle dish and instead of juicy, succulent Asian-style noodles, we got some gross, awfully-tasting, spaghetti resembeling thing. We also got soup, which we thought was going to be delicious, especially on a cold San Francisco night, but it was lifeless and tastless. I don't know how this made the SF Chronicle's Bargain Bites because their their food is dull. The servers are nice, but that simply could not make up for the horrible food. I don't know how this restaurant stays in business.\r \r We have not been back since and needless to say, will never go back there! Pros: Servers are nice, cool neighborhood Cons: Food lacks flavor and is overall gross more

best potstickers 8/8/2006

the potstickers are the best that i have ever had and not to mention the dumplings, especially the fried shrimp dumplings are really good. the chicken wings are also delicious, but the string beans are the best string beans you will ever have! Very large portions for little money, and the home made noodles are very fresh because the noodles are made once it is ordered. Wonderful chinese food with a different twist. When it is busy, it is worth the wait!!!! Pros: yummy food more

SO is good for take-out. 5/18/2006

SO has a small menu, and can be croweded at times as it is not a large place. Good sweet and sour soup, chicken wings, pot stickers and curry fried rice. Steak dinner has limited availability. Have been there many times, and though service has improved from when they first opened, service is still below average. When phone ordering take-out, the food is usually prompt. Pros: Good Quantity Food Cons: Service more

So.....Bad 5/13/2006

My girlfriend and I read all these great reviews, so we decided to give So a try. We were not impressed. Yes, you get a ton of food for not much money, but it was lousy food in my opinion. We ordered the shrimp dumplings, chicken curry and black bean noodles, all of which was pretty underwhelming. The food was bland and fairly forgettable. Upon closer examination it seems all the positive reviews had something to do with the mass amounts of food you get here for little money, but in the end, who cares if you get a lot of food for your dollar if the food is no good. We will not be recommending So to any of our friends. Pros: Cheap Cons: Food, Atmosphere, Food more

We go there all the time! 2/9/2006

I know the owner as I used to go to his parents restaurant. So is his own restaurant. This place is great. Everything is clean and not oily. The wings are great, their Chicken Mao Pao noodles, hot links and rice. Whenever I go on vacation and people tell me they want to go visit San Francisco. I always tell them to go to this restuarant. Boyfriend and I always order a whole bunch of food and take it home. It'll last 2 days... lunch and dinner! All for $25. You can't beat that. Pros: Food, Portions, Cleanliness Cons: When busy, it's loud more

A LOT of food for what you pay 11/7/2005

I decided to go try this place out after reading all the good reviews on it and went with my boyfriend. we went in and saw the waiter was so busy, since they only had ONE guy waiting on like 10 tables and he was literally RUNNING all over the place. but we were seated shortly and was given hot tea and some peas for appetizer. we ordered the So Wings (since so many people said it was delicious) and indeed it was delicious! I had a pork mao pao while my boyfriend had the pork dumpling soup noodle. THE SERVING is HUUUUUGE considering each entree is only $6.35. we both had plenty to take home and the bill came under 20$ pre tax. Pros: generous servings, inexpensive Cons: short on waiters more

Best potstickers in town 9/21/2005

best potsticlkers in town, spinach is good, wings are great. Unless you really like noodles and eat like a horse, order from appetizers. Pros: potstickers, potstickers , wings Cons: parking, atmosphere more

one of the best cheap eats around 8/16/2005

It's amazing that there's food this good for this price. For an American-born Chinese, this place serves up most of Mom's greatest hits, and the portions are huge! Two people can stuff themselves silly here for less than $15, including tip. We've dabbled in a few items on the menu, but it always seems a shame to miss the pork soup noodle with mustard greens. And potstickers. Get the potstickers. You will not be sorry. My boyfriend and I discovered So when he lived down the street, but we still make the pilgrimage across town several times a year. If you go during peak dinner times, expect to wait out on the street for a bit. Pros: rock-bottom prices, great food more

Yum!!! 5/2/2005

Great chicken wings and spinach with garlic! The kitchen is exceptionally clean, and it's a lot of fun to watch the chef stir fry everything in the wok. Loooove the chicken wings. Pros: Very clean, Inexpensive more

chicken wings!!!!!! 4/25/2005

i love this restaurant. i am on a mission to try each item. i love that they make their own noodles..makes this city girl feel a little ""naturish."" Recommend: So Wings, Black Bean Sauce Noodles. They even provide you with scissors to cut these ropes! more

Yummy Food and Great Prices 4/3/2005

I love this restaurant. It's a ""spin off"" of the very successful San Tung restaurant down the street. But at So, you can order their most famous dishes and noodle soups at a great price. The soup bowls are huge, the noodle are so chewy and tasty, and their string beans are delicious. Also their chicken is to die for! Pros: Value, Taste Cons: Small more
