Experienced Manager Needed 1/5/2012

Just left the 4Th St. N. locale. I was coldy welcomed when I walked in at 10am. I explained that I was a first-time customer coming in to try the breakfast specials I read about in an advertisement. I was told they would be here the same time tomorrow(7a-8:30a). I decided to re-think my attempt at trying this place on such a bad note. I ordered the Bacon Cheese Burger. I was never asked how I would like the burger cooked. I told her immediately this was not going to be a good experience, and I would like to speak to the owner. I asked the server if the burgers are all cooked the same or to order, and she balked at this question. She eventually said ""she thinks medium"". Upon being served, I cut into the 1/2 pounder and it was thoroughly cooked and dry. I told the server this was extremely disappointing, and she offered to have it re-made. I told her as a matter of principal, I do not waste food. I would give it to the homeless before allowing them to throw it away. I asked for dill slices to add to the burger because there wasn't any on my plate. I was brought 6 1/4 inch thick slices. I was expecting dill chips. I asked for the manager when I found out the owner wasn't in. A lady came and sat at my table, and after hearing my critique, she told me it wasn't a bad day until I came in. I abruptly changed gears in my conversation, and said I will need the owner's name and phone#. I was not going to be treated like an unwelcomed trespasser. I got my check and promptly paid for it. While paying, I was speaking to another employee that agreed that it was a great day up until i had a complaint. Apparently, my constructive criticism wasn't acceptable as constructive. I advised the cashier this is why a manager should be on duty. With a manager who has any common business skills and authority on behalf of the company, they could have smoothed over the situation right form the start. If I were the manager, I would have asked if the first-time customer, who was drawn into the restaurant due to the advertisement that our business spent money on in order to draw new customer's into the restraunt would like to order one of the breakfast special's as a courtesy, and an opportunity for us to gain their future business and maybe a referal. If I was the manager, and I was not made aware of the initial disappointment, I would, at the very least, offered to take 50% off the bill if the customer declined to have them re-make the burger and a comp. on my next visit. I wouldn't want to push the customer away from the business. It wasn't the fault of the customer to come into my business. It was the fault of the staff that the order wasn't taken and cooked properly. As the manager, I am responsible for my staff's professional conduct, and it would be my job to carefully apologize and caress the customer in a fashion that would make things all better, and we could gain that potential business and his referal's due to our consideration of his comfort and satisfaction. In this case, it was the complete opposite. I was condemned and shooed away like a peskey fly at an outdoor picnic. By the way, the Asst. Manager said she didn't know who the owner was. The cashier said his name was Louie and I would have to call the restaurant. She wasn't allowed to give his phone# out. I suggested she take my information, and have him call me. She told me to leave because I was keeping her from doing her job. I explained that I live in this community. Apparently, this didn't seem to be of any importance to her. Her name was Gina--the only one willing to provide a name is the one who eventually threw me out. At least she kept telling me to have a nice day. What a nice way to start the day. At least it can only get better. Can't wait to talk to you, Louie.\r more

National Pig Day at Skyway Jack's 4/3/2011

all around best place for breakfast or lunch!! 9/17/2008

After 32 years of service, and all that has is still the same Skyway Jacks! You find the same employees working that waited on you 10 years ago well as a couple new faces! Its good greasy southern home cooking that it always was....just like grandma use to make! If your from the north then try some Philadelphia Scrapple with some home fried potatoes...If your from the south try some scrambled brains with grits and a corn muffin. If your more traditional then maybe you should stick to bacon and eggs or some AWESOME pancakes! No matter what your taste may be, you can find something at Jacks! And dont forget their famous breakfast special Monday thru Friday (excluding all holidays) from 5am till 8am they have $2.29 specials! Get a cup of coffee with that and its $3.63 including tax for a full meal! You can name anywhere else that offers such a deal? This is by far my favorite place and highly recommend stopping by! Pros: excellent food and staff with a sense of humor! more

Best Brains 7/12/2007

I grew up in St. Pete. I've always loved Jacks. Before fishing or after a late night. Always just as good! I've been to both north & south. Both were great! Pros: great staff Cons: ????? more

Big Disappointment 3/30/2006

A once proud name, being ruined by bad service. Our waitress had to be tracked down, as she was too busy chatting with her friends to bother waiting on customers. Her response, when finally found was ""you just sat down."" News to me, we'd been looking for her for some time. She then called me a vulgar name at the kitchen window, loud enough for me to hear. I'm a long time customer who'll NEVER be back. Too bad, as the food is still good. Pros: Food still good Cons: Service Awful! more

Jack's is a great value 12/30/2004

Lunch at Jack's is very good. The food is wholesome and freshly prepared. Although the restaurant is not fancy, the service was great, and the staff was warm and friendly. Items on the menu such as the potato dishes are homemade. My burger was very tasty as was my husband liver. The prices are reasonable. Pros: reasonable prices, good food, friendly staff more

Great warm up place! 12/12/2002

As a student at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg and a member of the SAR team there, I went here many times to warm up. The food is good, fast and the atmosphere cozy. Dont forget the water access tho! Pros: staff, coffee, access Cons: parking, location more

Yuck!! 11/7/2002

This place is horrible...there isn't much space between tables therefore you feel like you are sitting on top of your neighbor! Also, the food wasn't up to par! The wait staff sucked!! more

Before eight-under $2 8/20/2002

Best breakfast deal on the Gulfcoast. No credit cards, no checks and no dissappoinments. more

Check out the 70's style Tee's 8/7/2002

Think of it as a truck stop w/out the highway/interstate road. Great southern breakfast at a better-than-reasonable price - can't go wrong. more

Get the Ham 7/26/2002

If your ever by the Skyway Bridge, you have to stop by Skyway Jack's and order the ham and eggs. The ham doesn't even fit on the plate, it's so big. more

When Pigs Fly! 7/23/2002

The sheer volume of variety here is something to behold! The atmosphere is one of a busy noisy and crowded diner - a ""greasy spoon"", but you'll be entertained by the collection of pig related memorabilia and the food is great! more

Biscuits and Gravy 7/19/2002

I have lived in the bay area for 30 years and have been going to Skyway Jacks for most of them. They have the best biscuits and gravy I have ever had. The breakfast pie is awesome and if you get a chance try the home made jelly. If lunch is what you want try the Cuban, it will rank with the best. My cousin from Chicago has to eat there every time he visits. On a week long visit last time he was here he went six times for breakfast. Treat yourself to the greasy spoon of Skyway Jacks, you wont be disappointed. Pros: awesome food, cheap prices, good coffee Cons: sometimes crowded, pig figurines more

Best comfort food in town 7/16/2002

I have been going to Skyway Jack's for almost 8 years now and have never a less than excellent meal. Their prices are unbelievable, and they have the best cream chipped beef in the South - trust me, I've tried a LOT! Pros: inexpensive Cons: crowded more

Save your money 6/20/2002

The waitresses with fried eggs on a conspicuous place on their shirts and the inside of the building need an overhaul. The food is greasy. The decaf tastes like water. The one good thing is the biscuits. more

HORRIBLE - Save Your Time and Money! 6/8/2002

Skyway Jack's served the worst breakfast with the worst service I have ever had. The coffee was cold plus I had to ask three times before I got a refill, (not by our waitress, who basically ignored us), and I never did get the glass of water I requested. My cheese omelette was dried and crunchy brown on the outside and the cheese was barely melted and coagulated on top. The potatoes were greasy, the bacon was greasy and our waitress never once came back to see if we needed anything, although she asked two gentlemen near us four times. Skyway Jack's has awful food and horrible service, so please do yourself a favor and find another place to eat breakfast! Go to Kissin' Cuzzins instead ... they understand great food and great service. Cons: Bad Service, Awful food, Too crowded more

Comfort Food 6/6/2002

Skyway Jack's is great, but if you are health conscience beware! Great comfort food...the stuff you wish Mom made. On weekends be prepared to wait in line. more

  • The Scene
The row of ceramic, knick-knack pigs that stare goofily from behind the cash register is a little kitschy. Yes, the waitresses call you ""hon."" But that's all part of the charm...
