cardboard cupcakes 12/22/2011

I ordered 1 dozen gluten free vanilla cupcakes. When I got home noticed they were in fact carrot cake and tasted like cardboard, very dry. We iced the cupcakes ourselves and that was the best part. Very disappointing. more

Great Bakery, their cookbook is a scam 9/6/2010

Love the bakery, great vegan treats, have been going to it since they opened. A bit pricey, but the best vegan bakery in the city. The cookbook however is a scam, the baked goods are nothing like the ones at the store, and are even inferior to the recipes you can find for free online. The bakery is great, the book is lousy. It's that simple. more

don't believe the hype... 9/17/2008

Ummm I don't get it. The place is cute enough as are the employees; very nice. The products just don't taste good. I walk by this establishment every day on the way to work and stopped in today to buy some chocolate cupcakes for my hubby's bday. They were beautiful to look at, but tasted weird. Also the carrot cupcakes literally tasted like cardboard. I'm not a vegan but I know all the vegans out there are'nt settling for this -Sugar Honey Iced Tea- they pass off as 'cake'. You could'nt pay me to eat another bite of this garbage. don't waste your money.... walk over to Sugar Sweet Sunshine and get the real deal; their spice cupcakes are the bomb! What a dissapointment this place is, Pros: pretty cupcakes Cons: expensive, yucky tasting, no flavor more

You really have to try this place! 6/23/2008

As someone who is newly vegan AND gluten free, I have been sulking over the fact that there are no good baked goods out there (that i have found)....UNTIL NOW! My boyfriend and I visited Babycakes this weekend at a friend's suggestion, and we were completely impressed! We tried the chocolate gluten free cupcakes - which were topped with some of the best chocolate frosting I have ever had! We also had the carrot cupcakes with mock cream cheese icing - Also wonderful! I'm not sure HOW they succeed...but they do...and you'll never miss the 'real' thing. This certainly tastes like the real thing, with none of the guilt...or stomach pain/fullness afterward! We also shared a slice of the banana chocolate chip bread.....a real treat :) Surely anyone can enjoy this place...especially those of us who know how hard it is to accomplish perfect treats like these with none of the usual techniques! Pros: YUMMY! Cons: small place... more

Great Cuptake Tops! 3/26/2008

The cupcake tops are amazing, as is the frosted pumpkin bread! The consistency of the frosting is initially a bit odd, but it tastes great! I will be a regular. Pros: the treats Cons: small space more

Good - Not Too Sweet - Lacking Wow 3/15/2008

These were fresh and tasty - not too sweet but I guess they just lacked the wow of traditional cupcakes. For vegans and those who have specific dietary needs - this is a good alternative. The shop is tiny. more

Don't tell everyone about this place. I want it to be my secret, favorite cupcake spot! Flavor, ambiance, friendly service and health value all make it a winner! 1/19/2008

I am not a vegan, nor do I plan on becoming one. I have been trying EVERY cupcake place in NYC (all 5 boroughs) and this one is now my favorite. There are other bakerys that are slightly better in taste, but the feeling you have after you ate this healthy (or healthier) cake can't be beat. I got six and they survived the subway ride all the way back to Queens thanks to their nifty boxes they have there. The frosting is unbelievable! So good. And I was surprised how good the cake was. Moist and very flavorfull. The service. I don't know what is up. But the service was very friendly and warm. Maybe the best. And the store has 10 times more character then the other big cupcake bakeries. I love the bakers in the back! That uniform ""takes the cake"". I'm going back. Only draw back is the price. $21 for six cakes. Probably the most expensive I have paid so far. Pros: Health value. Frosting and moist cake. Super neat ambience. Cons: Could be hard to find (maybe a good thing). Small store. Limited seating. Expensive cakes, any way you look at it. more

Wish they were attitude free. 11/23/2007

This tiny Bakery is a nice place to order (glutenfree) cupcakes, but the attitude I get from the staff is an issue. Besides from being very pricey the staff thinks way to much of them selves. I think they need to learn a little about customer service and stop being so rude!!!! would definatley incourage delivery. I have actually asked around and they seem to be rude to mostly everyone. Hope Babycake's owners read this and try to encourage their staff to be a little nicer to the customers who are paying so much for their so so cakes. Pros: gluten free cupcakes Cons: everything else more

GLUTEN FREE AMAZING CUPCAKES 10/23/2007

These cupcakes are not only Vegan, but also Gluten Free(if you choose the ones made without spelt). They are soooo good, I love them. The best part is not feeling guilty after eating them, because they aren't made with anything that is bad for you. IFor Easter I bought a cake, that can be special ordered. They made it so cute and it tasted just as good as the cupcakes, I like all the flavors, but my favorite is vanilla with vanilla frosting. \r Go check this place out for Healthy treats you don't have to feel guilty about! more

Some things you just have to try yourself 8/11/2007

I just had to post something after reading robota's review. Tastes are totally subjective, since after being vegan for over five years, I have started trying some non-vegan foods again. I find the aftertastes of butter and eggs quite unpalatable, and if a vegan alternative of a baked good is available, I totally prefer it (no yucky buttery/eggy aftertaste!) So if you are vegan and you have not been to Babycakes, you simply must visit. If you are not vegan and want to see what all the hullabaloo is about with Babycakes, you must judge their goods on their own merits and not compare them to goods that you are accustomed to. Maybe you will miss the buttery/eggy aftertaste. Maybe you won't. Maybe you will like the texture of the food. Maybe you won't. Just don't expect vegan renditions of non-vegan foods to taste *exactly* like non-vegan foods. If they did, I, for one, would not eat them. Pros: Frosting, gluten-free cupcakes done well Cons: Pricey more

Good vegan cupcakes 4/17/2007

I eat vegan cupcakes because I am lactose intolerant and after trying a few other vegan cupcakes I love the babycakes frosting the most. In my opinion frpsting is one of the best parts of cupcakes. Some of the other vegan desserts seemed a little dry to me. Cupcakes are the thing to get here especially the vanilla ones. Pros: Vegan Cons: small location more

Yummy Yummy Yummy 3/26/2007

I went to this place with my friend who used to think she was allergic to gluten (when in fact she found out she was allergic to soy). I was a little scared of eating a cupcake since i dont really like trying new things. They now make their frosting w/out soy!!!! Makes no difference to me though-but these things were so good. And you don't feel like a giant fatty from eating them because you know you didn't eat any refined sugar or buttercream frosting. Better than Magnolia's- which I just tried this weekend and only ate the frosting because the cake tasted like turkey. Anyways- Babycakes= good cupcakes for everybody. Even people who are skeptical of new/alternative/natural ingredients like me!!! Pros: Yummyness!!! Cons: Location more

If your not vegan you will feel cheated 11/9/2006

Sorry but I just don't get it. The cupcakes cost far more than the delicious ones they have over at sweet sugar sunshine and they just don't taste good. I'm not vegan so I can easily taste the difference between a real cupcake and the fake vegan ones. It's just not pleasant. For most people it's a trek to the remote area is too far and it's just not worth the high prices. Pros: cute worker outfits Cons: bad tasting cupcakes, pricey! more

Vegan Treats 8/22/2006

I liked this vegan bakery. I ordered 2 cupcakes, 1 chocolate chip cookie and a lemonade. It came out to $9. I thought the cupcakes were alright. Be sure to eat them quickly as the frosting melts. I thought the chocolate chip cookie was excellent - not too sweet. It's hard to find yummy vegan treats. Based on that, I recommend trying it if you're in the neiborhood. Pros: Chocolate chip cookies, not too sweet items more

Frosting Heaven 8/6/2006

""Babycakes is an amazing resource for people with food intolerances/allergies. It could be difficult for those not following strict diets to truly appreciate their efforts; although I know many people who think their treats are delicious regardless.\r \r They tack up little signs next to each item listing what is in it. Gluten free and wheat free cupcakes can even be iced with soy free icing; that's how dedicated they are to providing something for everyone. It's a nice all natural, healthy alternative to refined sugars and hydrogenated oils. It is more expensive, but alternative flours and sweeteners naturally are.\r \r Plus, the atmosphere is cute, cute, cute!"" Pros: Many gluten/wheat/dairy free options, cute environment more

Vegan Treats 7/6/2006

Babycakes' cupcakes are delicious. One of the best things about Babycakes is that you can linger in house while you savor your treat. Rather than herd you outside, the staff welcomes you to sit in a sunny windowseat and flip through a Hatje Cantz book. Try the lemonade sweetened with agave nectar. The sweets are expensive because the high quality ingredients, like agave nectar, are expensive. Pros: atmosphere, healthy treats, service Cons: not cheap more

Overrated 6/12/2006

The girls that work there are very nice. The setting couldn't be more adorable. But the cupcakes are perhaps the worst of the higher-end bakeries in the city. Unless you're craving wheat and gluten-free desserts, it's hardly worth the time, and especially the money. (almost twice the price of regular cupcakes.) Pros: friendly staff, adorable setting, good for the wheat and gluten allergic Cons: Overpriced, worst of the high-end bakeries, inconsistent more

Worth the walk! 5/12/2006

The chocolate chip cookies are DELICIOUS. I also tried the carrot cupcake and the vanilla cupcake. The cupcakes themselves are wonderful; the vanilla icing had a bit of a different taste than I was expecting (but then again, I'm not a vegan), but my boyfriend loved it. Absolutely worth the walk!!! Pros: chocolate chip cookie Cons: location more

Fantastic Desserts 4/24/2006

Went to Babycakes while in NYC for the weekend and was thrilled to have so many tasty GF options. Even my non-GF husband liked them!! They are a little pricey, but definitely worth it. We got 1 chocolate cupcake, 1 carrotcake cupcake, a banana chocolate bread, and an apple crumb cake slice. The apple crumb was my least favorite (kind of bland) but the banana chocolate bread was FABULOUS as were the cupcakes. GREAT GF option!! And they are starting mail/internet order service soon! Also, the items with spelt were clearly labeled and they verified with the manager when I asked, so there were no worries that I was getting something not truly GF. Pros: Taste, Quick Ordering Cons: Pricey, Need more variety more

I DREAM ABOUT THIS STUFF 4/10/2006

Ok, I'm a huge sweeteater. I've done the rounds, Magnolia, Cupcake Cafe, Billy's, but I LOVE this place. I don't feel gross after I eat the sweets, which is what I'm accustomed to. And for being a ""healthy"" treat, these goods are DELICIOUS!! The cupcakes win my vote for best baked goods. Ugly but delicious. more
