Editorial review from Citysearch 7/9/2012

The last 2 times I have been here the service was some of the worst I have ever had. The food was awesome but when a different server comes up and tells us we haven't seen our server for an hour because he was hungover throwing up in the bathroom, I think I will not be back. more

Awkward service, mediocre food. 6/30/2011

I moved to Atlanta (Midtown) about a year ago, and since then have been exploring restaurants in the area. I went to Shout about a week ago on a date for drinks and sushi. The atmosphere was strange--overdone, pretentious, nearly empty (we arrived at 7:30 on a Thursday) and the air conditioning seemed to be off. We were then seated at a table right next to a group of men who were loud, drunk, and not very polite. Out of all the open tables, we had to sit next to three men clapping obnoxiously and shouting. Our waitress was nervous and awkward, she clearly did not have a lot of experience, and didn't know what a lot of the items on the menu were. She would approach our table very cautiously, smiled nervously and talked under her breath. It was all very strange. On top of that, we ordered the calamari (it was alright, nothing special) and then each ordered a different type of sushi. I ordered the rainbow roll, and my date ordered something of the special menu. Our food came unexpectedly quick-- it looked good, but it was alright at best. Definitely wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything to brag about. Later that evening (about 5 hours after we returned home), I began to feel very nauseous. After an hour of feeling to my stomach, I finally couldn't take it any longer and ended up in the bathroom getting sick multiple times that evening. My date, also reported feeling somewhat sick to his stomach but not nearly to the same degree (he had a few pieces of my sushi). In conclusion, AVOID THIS RESTAURANT! What started as a fun date-night, turned into an awkward and very bad food experience. There are SO many great restaurants in Atlanta, do not waste your time or money here. more

Out with Shout 2/14/2011

I am extremely hesitant to write a less than flattering review for a restaurant as I'm well aware of the impact that it can have on the operation of the business and people's livelihood. At the same time, if a review is way off base then the free market will take care of itself and people will ignore it and the bad review will look like an outlier. With that said, I've been to Shout about a dozen times and the last few times the experience has deteriorated. On a recent visit I ordered some sashimi with my lunch which was never brought out with my meal and when I said something and was told they would take care of it - they did so by charging me for it and bringing out as our party of eight had paid the check and had our coats on and were walking out the door.\r \r Now to today's experience which is beyond the pale. In applying baseball rules, three strikes and you're out: Strike 1) On a Monday early lunch you would think the place would be as clean as can be but apparently their version of clean is to put black napkins on top of crumb and stain filled tables (we actually moved tables and the second table was worse). This means the linens from the night before (or earlier) were still on; Strike 2) The spicy tuna mixture was gamey - I had a piece and felt sick and had to spit it out (sorry for the bad visual) - I actually smelled a second piece just to make sure I wasn't overreacted and it was bad tuna. That tells me they wrap up the tuna mixture from the nights before and don't make it fresh every day which is not just gross but flat out dangerous; Strike 3) took close to ten minutes to get a pair of chopsticks; Strike 4) when I told the manager what I ordered the first time and he said he'd bring it fresh - they actually got the order wrong and gave me smoked Salmon where I explicitly asked for Fresh Salmon which is no big deal except on a do-over I expect it right!; Strike 5) The manager walked past us no less than three times after I had gotten my new food and did not make eye contact or ask me how things were or apologize. \r \r In full disclosure, they did take my meal off the bill, and the waitress did apologize (although she asked several times after the complaints ""is everything still excellent?"" which presumes things at one point where excellent and they were far from it).\r \r Shout may survive because of its convenient location, somewhat trendy decor, and its diverse menu but if it continues down this road with dirty tables, bad sushi, and management that appears indifferent I can't say that it won't eventually lose the business lunch crowd (and other crowds) as a dining experience like this is unacceptable. more

Happy to Get Caught in the Rain 7/18/2010

After having Shout and another restaurant recommended by the concierge to be within walking distance of The W, we chose the other restaurant and headed for the corner. Just then it started raining steadily, and from our sheltered doorway we spied Shout just a few yards away. It was a great twist of fate for us, as we were dining rather early and had teenagers along. The service was awesome and personalized and the menu had a variety of offerings which addressed all of our preferences. The appetizers were fairly basic, but the sushi was great, the steak super tender, and the pork chop with cheese grits and turnip greens was heavenly. The miniature desserts made it too easy to share tastes of a few favorites as well. Hours after dinner, we were still commenting on how great the meal had been. We'll definitely return on our next trip to Atlanta! Pros: Everything more

Shout - Not so much to shout about more like crying 4/19/2010

Went to Shout to start out an evening of fun and ended up having the worst dining experience ever. \r \r There were a total of five of us it started out great, Moscoto, Voss Waters, the infamous #2 and a Martini. \r \r We ordered Mahi mahi, Steak, a white cheese pizza with pepperoni, crab cakes and a chicken salad.\r \r When the white chese pizza was ordered it was requested w/o Ricotta, the steak was ordered medium and Mahi Mahi normal. The Mahi Mahi came back rubbery the steak came back extra well, as in charcoal black.\r \r We sent the steak back it cam back seard and cold as hell in the middle. The pepperoni white cheese pizza came back with the ricotta scraped off and the pepperoni's on top. My friend was allergic to ricotta. \r \r The manager Jim ""punk ass"" Davis treated us as if we ran off the plantation with all the cotton in our purses.\r \r We told him about the pizza and showed him the ricotta and he told us that it wasn't ricotta as if no one knows what ricotta looks like. The he went to the back and got some shredded cheese and said it was ricotta. I wanted to tell him that my cousin is a Sous Chef and that I had been exposed to more than shredded cheddar. Needless to say he didn't do anything. Never apologized he was the rudest person that i've ever had to deal with. He argued with us. I have had better treatment at Wendy's. \r \r Shout will not never get another dime of my money! That's a poor establishment business wise. Pros: Nice set up Cons: Poor Management more

Terrible overall!!! 3/12/2010

last year my prom group made reservations at shout for ONE table for thirty people...we came in on time and they didnt have our table for us because another group hadnt left yet even though we made a reservation. Then they made us split up our group into three other tables with my table being served and getting our food while one didnt get food and the other had to get theirs to go because we were late and our table had finished. Food was pretty good and the service wasnt too bad considering, but it was bad when at the end our server told us that it was at least 20$ per person and that if we didnt order more food they would just add the balance to our tab anyway. it didnt say anything about this on their website! By the time it was all said and done we were 3 hours late to our prom because of the terrible service and their not being prepared. i'm sure its great for two people who want to go out on a date, but i wouldnt reccomend this at all for large groups! Pros: ok food Cons: everything else more

Good Food and Place to Hang Out 2/27/2010

Shout is perfect for doing everything you want in one place. I love to take my out of town friends there to hang out. You can get some pretty good food. I like their sushi and tapas and you can get a little of the bar/nightclub feel without truly being in a nightclub. The outdoor patio is wonderful on a nice Atlanta night. It's also great for people watching. Pros: Nice Outdoor Patio more

It was OK 12/1/2009

We ate here in September with the intentions of doing the $10 all you can eat tapas they advertise on the website. We got there a few minutes before 9:00 and were told that the special ends at 9:00 but we could get it if we order quickly. So we started looking over the tapas menu to make our decision. We were all set to order a bunch of food, when our server informed us that the special is for a set menu. OK...... Let's look at the set menu then. Well, the ""tapas"" special consisted of soup, salad, sushi, a slice of cheese pizza, and something else I don't remember. None of this is tapas... Very misleading. Since we were already there and seated, we decided to order off the menu. My boyfriend ordered the short ribs with spinach and polenta. I ordered a wedge salad, beef satay, and shrimp potstickers. We also ordered a bottle of the house malbec.\r \r The wine came out fast and it was decent. The salad came out quickly. It was smaller than I was expecting, but it was good. Then we waited for the rest of our meal. And waited. And waited. Our server came over and apologized for the delay. A large party upstairs had ordered just before us and the kitchen was busy. Hmmmmm... the rest of the restaurant was pretty much empty. What would have happened if they were busy too? Anyway, she was very apologetic about it and offered us some edamame to snack on while we waited. The manager also stopped by to apologize for the delay. That was nice of them.\r \r When the food finally arrived, it was presented very nicely. It looked very artful and appetizing on the plates. The short ribs were very tender, but lacked some flavor. More seasoning would have been good. The spinach was good and the polenta was bland. Granted, it's hard to dress up polenta. Maybe they should reconsider another side for the short ribs? The shrimp potstickers were cooked nicely, but contained no shrimp that I could discern. The overpowering taste was ginger. Lots and lots of ginger. The beef satay was tender and flavorful, but the bed of cucumber salad it rested on tasted like mayonnaise. Overall, our server did a decent job. But the lack of planning on the part of the kitchen was disappointing and the food was so-so. We won't be back for dinner anytime soon. Pros: trendy decor Cons: misleading ""specials"", slow kitchen more

Great outdoor patio 5/11/2009

This place has a really cool outdoor patio area. The pizza and calamari are both amazing. Music is great. You can go here and relax outdoor with a drink or party it up with the DJ inside. Pros: Has a really great rooftop for summer cocktails more

Food not the best, tendry atmosphere is good, roof top bar is great. 2/24/2009

Honestly, for being so 'hip' and 'trendy' I was expecting the food to be much better. The sushi is not very good, especially for the price you pay, but they do have a wide variety of foods on the menu. I went there for a friend's birthday - we ate downstairs, had to wait a very long time for our food that was not even close to what I was expecting, and they took an eternity to split the bill between our large group. I would recommend telling them who is on your tab before you start ordering. Getting past the not-so-delicious food, my drinks were great. The birthday girl was not as impressed with her drink and had to have it re-made a few times. The roof-top bar was definitely something they can brag about as the views of Peachtree Rd are great. I would not recommend dining there, but I would go there again just to meet good friends for drinks. Pros: Trendy atmosphere, good views, decent drinks Cons: Food, Service more

Trendy Atmosphere 2/3/2009

We have been here dozens of times since it opened a few years ago. The food is good as is the service. There are two patios. Both are good but the upstairs patio overlooks Peachtree street and is the place to be on good days. If you want more romantic or quiet, sit inside downstairs. The booths upstairs on the patio are awesome and seat 6 easily. I have had just about everything on the menu. You can't go wrong with the sushi or the steaks. Avoid the baked potatoes---they are always undercooked and hard. It's a place to see and be seen. Jeans are fine but at night you see a bit more dressy casual. It's in Midtown so its attracts a very mixed cosmopolitan crowd. If you can't check your prejudices at the door you probably should go elsewhere. Pros: Atmosphere and Crowd Cons: Baked Potatoes are horrible more

Definite Yeahs, Definite Nays 1/10/2009

I've eaten at Shout twice-once in the afternoon and once in the evening. My friend from Minneapolis and I sat at the bar one afternoon, had a few glasses of wine, and experienced THE BEST sushi either of us have ever had. We were both in the military so we can honestly say we've been outside of our hometowns and experienced more than most folks. I had the good fortune of traveling extensively overseas for 12 yrs. I've eaten sushi in countries that I probably never should have taken the chance (luckily, my GI tract survived unscathed), and I've dined in downtown Tokyo at a classic, ""boats floating around the joint, pay by the plate"" sushi bar. While the experience of being in Tokyo and eating sushi was cool, I still have to give props to Shout, right here in Atlanta, Georgia, USA! I had the ""Sushi/Sashimi for One"" and she had some kind of crispy Dragon roll. Now I won't go anywhere else in Atlanta for sush. I took another out-of-town guest from NYC there a few weeks later......same experience. And by the way, as far as the price.......really, REALLY, reasonable.....especially for the absolutely top-quality of the food. Now the 'Nay' part; I will say that the service we received on the second visit was ""slow"". But then again, it was a Friday night and they were REALLY busy. Oh yeah, and we didn't have a reservations but we only waited about 10 minutes. And yes, the place was packed! All-in-all, I give Shout a definite ""Two Thumbs Up"". The food is AMAZING, the restaurant itself is very trendy and the ambiance definitely adds to the whole experience. Just make sure to check the business hours here on 'Citysearch' and go when you're not in a rush. That way if they're busy, you won't confuse the outstanding quality of the food or miss a quality dining experience with a ""the world revolves around me and I expect everything NOW"" attitude. Pros: Awesome sushi, nice atmosphere, very reasonably priced. Cons: More light would be nice (to read the menus by), the service was a little slow, kind of noisy. more

Coolest Place Around 12/20/2008

I go to SHOUT often and can always expect a good time. I often go by myself, and wind up with plenty of interesting people to converse with. The bartenders are really good. They always take good care of me. I think the drink prices are fair, and reflective of any other bar in Midtown. The upstairs has a really great view. The dance floor gets going around 10:00pm on weekends. I don't particularly like to dance, but I will grab a chair, eat a fresh, hot pizza and watch the ladies. I enjoy the scene, but I am easy going and don't criticize establishments for what they are not. You can find flaws anywhere if you are looking...but SHOUT is doing a lot of things right, and I always have a good time. Pros: Great Scene more
