I was a very dedicated client to Miriam for almost a year. I met her for the first time because I volunteered to be her model. I put my trust into her as my stylist and I truly enjoyed going to this salon. The atmosphere is wonderful and all of the employees are very friendly. Miriam contacted me today through Facebook explaining to me that she can no longer be my stylist and that I will no longer be able to book appointments with her. I was very shocked because I have been nothing but helpful during her journey from an assistant to a full-time stylist. She explained to me that she felt as though she could no longer make me happy! I was very confused, because if she did not make me happy, then I would not continue to have her as my stylist. This is very unprofessional behavior and I am extremely hurt and disappointed. She was not only my stylist but a friend as well. I do love this salon but after this incident, I would not recommend this salon to anyone. Myself and my mother will not be returning to Shine In The Heights. Too much drama in this salon, I felt like I was back in High School! :-( more

I've been going to Shine for a few years now and I've seen Cherryl and Wyatt and had a blowout from Jamie. All three were wonderful and very conscientious and knowledgable. Cherryl is the owner and has always made me feel so welcome and the salon environment is so casual and fun. Wyatt did my color the last time and I don't think I've ever had a better color service. I went in blonde and asked for a change and he suggested red and it came out fantastic (there's a mix of balayage and traditional highlighting in there and it's so natural.) It's a perfect tone for my skin and he took a lot of time to make sure I would be able to grow it out the way I liked it and not have to worry about going back every 6 weeks (hard to do on my student's budget).\r I've also thrown ""girls day"" parties there and my group can't wait to get back and have another party at Shine.\r Very wonderful all around Salon and the family vibe is fantastic. more

Hi Jackie I am Wyatt and would like to apologize for the hair cut. I hope you don't take my wrong doing out on the other stylist in the salon. I truly wished you would have called me to let me know your feelings about your cut. I will personally like to give you a refund and pay for your extensions. We have a great stylist here name Amy that would be a great to install them. Please please contact me or our owner Cherryl at the salon so that we can work this out. Once again I am truly sorry and would love the chance to make it up to you. Please contact us when you can. more

Editorial review from Citysearch 12/6/2012

NEVER AGAIN. I brought in 3 pictures, asking for the ""long bob"" like Jennifer Aniston. Wanted shoulder length in the back, a bit longer in the front. The 3 pictures clearly showed this. Stylist Wyatt instead cut my hair 1/2 inch short in the back, with the front staying very long. This in no way looks anything like the shoulder length cut for which I asked. When I questioned him on it, he said it must have been a communication problem (which I don't understand because I had 3 pictures) but this was his ""vision."" I appreciate that he gave me a discount on his ""vision,"" but unfortunately taking $20 dollars off does not give me back the 7 inches he cut off the back of my hair. I have showed the pictures to several people and they cannot understand how he cut my hair the way he did. I am now looking for recommendations on hair extensions so I can somehow repair the damage he did. Everyone says it looks awful and overall a terrible cut. I wish Wyatt would have shared his ""vision"" with me before destroying hair that takes very long to grow back. I cannot commet on other stylists in this salon, but I can say that I will never again use someone like Wyatt who ignores client's requests and instead chops, chops, chops for his own ""vision."" I am the one who has to now live with 1/2 inch long hair. more

If you're looking for great lashes, go see Lauren! 2/28/2011

I was in an upcoming wedding and was looking for something to brighten my look. I came across LashesbyLauren, and decided to get eyelash extensions. I had never had extensions before, so I was a little nervous at first. But, Lauren was very patient, took her time & walked me through the process. I received lots of compliments & felt beautiful!! The best part was it looked so natural & what a treat not to have to worry about curling my lashes every morning. I didn't even need to apply makeup... more

Shine and Sharon are great! 1/5/2011

I was casually looking for a new salon when I came across a Houston Tidbit coupon. On impulse, I made an appointment without reading any reviews or doing any research. A gamble - but I won! \r \r I have been going to Shine for months now and I always use Sharon Dewitt. My color is the prettiest and most natural its looked since before my first encounter with hair dye in high school. She's also been really helpful as I try and grow my hair out for my wedding. I hate having longer hair and have always worn it a little past my chin with layers, but Sharon has cut it in a way that's easy to manage. Sharon's the best - and I won't trust anyone but her to do my hair on the wedding day.\r \r The salon itself is so cute and inviting. On Saturdays, they have fresh cookies. All in all - a great salon! more

I'm a fan of Shine! 11/11/2010

It is always a pleasure going to Shine. Sharon DeWitt has been doing my hair for about a year now & I have always been happy with how I look & feel afterwards. In fact, she took me from blonde to red this last time - which could have been scary! - but it turned out great & I couldn't be happier. I'd definitely suggest checking this place out! more

Love this salon!!! 11/4/2010

First of all, I was referred to this salon by a friend who has gone there for a while. I was referred to one stylest, but ended up getting Sharon DeWitt because the other girl wasn't available. I am SO thankful it worked out that way! I absolutely love Sharon and what she's done for my hair. \r \r I decided to lighten my hair earlier this year and she gradually eased me into the highlights. By the summer, it was the perfect amount of sunkissed looking hair. I asked her for very natural looking highlights that blended really well and that's exactly what I got.\r \r I have never had so many compliments on my hair as I have since I've been going to Sharon. I have referred a few other friends to her as well who also love her. My roommate had some major color issues with her blonde hair and Sharon was able to correct it easily.\r \r Shine in the Heights is the cutest place ever. If you're looking for a new ""do,"" defintely try it out!\r \r Kim more

Great everything! 9/21/2010

What a fabulous salon! Quaint and cute. Front desk is nice and professional. The owner Cheryl is the sweetest! I have been going to Shine now for the past year since I moved down the street. I have always had a great experience with my haircuts. I recently went in and got a Brazilian Blow out! OH MY GOSH! AMMMM-AZING! Ivania did the Brazilian Blow out on me and what can I say but am so GLAD that I did it and that she suggested to me. My hair is thick, the Blowout has made my hair so much more manageable, less blow dry time, less using of my straight iron. It used to take me about 30 minutes to blow dry, style and it has cut the time in half. And with this Houston humidity, it is answer for all women who want NO FRIZZ! Leaves your hair silky and shiny. I have received so many complements and people touching my hair in disbelief. I suggest you do it and call and ask for Ivania. This salon has some TALENT! more

The best cut, color and style in Houston 9/14/2010

I can't say enough wonderful things about Shine In The Heights. It is the kind of fun and fashionable place I love going to every 7 weeks. Cherryl has been my stylist for 8 years. I've always leave feeling like a million bucks. She's on top of all the current techniques for coloring and caring for hair. She really listens to all my requests and concerns. She's the real deal. A total pro. Everyone who works at this fun and trendy house tucked in the Heights is committed to making your experience a wonderful one. Love it! more

Great Atmosphere, Great Colorist, Great Location,Great Value 9/14/2010

As with many women, I have had my battles with finding the perfect salon. There are many options to consider: first and foremost - talent, second - location, location, location, third - do I feel comfortable here, Shine in the Heights has one of the most inviting and warm atmosphere's around. You can walk in and just feel at home here (This may be due to the fact that it is a renovated house or because the owner has her cute little dog running around) and fourth - this place offers the perks of a 5th Avenue Salon, but offers a great deal for the quality of their services. I kept hearing things about this ""quaint little salon"" in the Heights that I just had to check out. I finally booked an appointment with someone named Sharon. I walked in, dug the vibe and got whisked into a charming little back room to talk about my hair. I'm blond, but I'm picky - why? I hate getting my hair done and then feeling like it needs to be colored two weeks later. I expressed this concern to Sharon and she said that she had a solution for that ... at this point I was thinking, ""ok, I have been getting my hair colored blond for over 20 years now and no one has had a solution"" In the end, SHE WAS RIGHT - she did what I refer to as hair magic... I went in six weeks later to get my hair done again, but I still felt like it was as good as new. My roots were blended perfectly and tone was still fresh and vibrant. I went in the second time and this time we added a trim. She trimmed my hair to my exact request. (I hate it when I walk into a salon and ask for trim and walk out with my hair six inches shorter). Bottom line, Sharon is a brilliant colorist who can really feel what a person is wanting and she knows how to listen to her clients. What more can you ask for? more

Best Value in Town 9/2/2010

I have tried many salons in Houston over the seven years that I have lived here and have finally found a keeper in Shine. Cherryl is amazing! First, she highlighted my hair with warm blonde color and then used a base breaker to make the look more natural. My husband loved it! He even said that it finally looks like I may actually be a natural blonde rather than an obvious bleacher. It was the fastest color that I have ever had and the least expensive. Cherryl even mentioned that we may not have to do the highlights every time which was so refreshing after being accustomed to being sold on extra services and products at every other salon. As for the cut, I could not be happier. I brought in a picture which she was able to very closely replicate while adjusting to my face size and shape and to my previous horrible haircut. I was happy yesterday but the real test came this morning when I had to style on my own and was actually able to get the same look as she did in store! I could not be happier and have already booked out my next two appointments. Very, very good value! more

Left the same way I came in...with dark roots! 3/17/2010

I have dark brown hair and color it a warm light brown. I came in for a fresh highlights and a root touch up. Sharon was the stylist who worked on my hair; she said she would give me a warm color and color my roots to match. When she was finished I requested that she just dry a section of my hair, so I could see the hair color. (It was a Tuesday, and I was just going home). This might have been a mistake because it took me longer to notice the bad dye job. \r \r When I went home I dried it, and like Yum Yum (another reviewer) I noticed that my hair had big roots. In other words it looks just like it had when I went in, except I was 100 dollars poorer. I, like Yum Yum, asked my friends and co-workers who all agreed that it looked like I hadn't done my hair, and that I had dark roots. They also commented that the bottom was to dark. \r \r I expressed my feelings to Sharon. She said that the bottom was already dark and that she couldn't do anything about that. I kind of agreed with her because she did not dye that; however, I think it was her skill as a colorist that made the color difference so obvious. (I wasn't rude, so I didn't tell her that.) She agreed that there was a large gap between the roots and the highlighted part but she said that it was the processors fault. (Whatever.) She said that sometimes it takes her awhile to know what processor works best on clients. (Shouldn't she know that already?) When she was done my hair looked slightly better, but it really wasn't that great, and you could still she some roots. I cut my losses, and didn't bother calling again. \r \r This was about 8 weeks ago. I just posted this because I just dyed my own hair with Nice and Easy and it looks better than what Sharon did. Also, I saw this place had such high marks! That must have been their friends. Honestly, I'm just tring to warn people. It was cheap, but you get what you pay for. Pros: The owners Yorkie (dog). Cons: bad colorist/stylist, bad parking. more

What went wrong? 3/10/2010

This was my first time coming here. I was referred to Cherryl or MaryAnn, but they were booked on the day I wanted to come in and the only stylist open was Sharon. I had read the reviews beforehand and recalled Sharon's rave reviews, so I was ok with that. \r \r I told Sharon what I wanted to do for my color and she did a good job with that. She suggested some face framing highlights, which I have had done many times in the past, so I went with her suggestion. That was a mistake. Many of the foils did turn out beautifully, but the ones that mattered were the ones that actually framed my face along my hairline. Above my forehead, there was about a one inch gap from where my hairline was and where the highlight started and the highlights were too chunky. I didn't really notice it until I got home, so I called and let her know that I wasn't happy and scheduled another time to come in and fix them.\r \r When I went back, I specifically pointed out the two main issues: the highlights were way too far away from my root, which made it look like 2 months grow out, and that the two streaks above my forehead were a little too chunky for me. Not sure how this happened, but I walked out of there without either issue being fixed. It was bizarre, considering I watched her put the foils in and say she was going to get as close to the root as possible.\r \r At this point I was pretty mad. Friends and coworkers agreed that it looked like an amateur had done the highlights and they all told me to not let them touch my hair again and just ask for my money back. I decided to contact Cherryl and see what she suggested. She had me come in so she could look at them to see if they were fixable. It was pretty awkward for me to have to go back twice, as I have never done that before, but she was very professional about it. She agreed that the highlights were too chunky and way too far back, so she broke up the streaks with some lowlights and brought the highlighted part down to the root. A simple fix, which I why I'm still pretty confused as to what happened with Sharon.\r \r Cherryl gave me a shampoo and conditioner for having to come back for corrections twice, which was nice of her.\r \r With all of the great salons in Houston though, I doubt I'll return to Shine in the Heights. Third time was the charm for getting my hair to look right, but unfortunately I think in this case it's also three strikes and you're out. : / Pros: Quirky, laid back atomosphere, Owner is great Cons: A little hard to find more

great color, cute place 3/7/2010

I've been to this salon, which is in a little house on 11th street several times now, for my color, and I have never been disappointed. I've sent 2 of my friends, and both of them loved the stylist i recommended, Sharon. She always does a great job, and the place is just so laidback and cute, you can't help but love it! Pros: homey cute more

Shine Rocks! 9/30/2009

I went to Shine in the Heights and had Sharon style my hair. I told her I wanted something a little bit more funky so she gave me highlights, lowlights, and a gloss. It looked amazing without being too unique. I will definately be going back in the future to have my hair upkeep. The price was amazing and the people were very nice! Great salon, Great stylist! more

Amazing! 9/11/2009

I recently tried Shine for my first time after a previous bad experience at another salon. My expectation were not only met with the great color job I received, but were blown away when I saw how cool the salon was! I will definately be back to see Sharon, who did a fantastic job which was better than I'd hoped for. And the value! No more crazy salon bills!! more

Awesomely comfortable 7/6/2009

After moving here 3 years ago, the task of finding a new hair salon was daunting, but I luckily went with the supercute ad I saw in Heights Pages and tried out Shine in the Heights.\r I've been going to Meryann for haircuts for over two years now, and I have never been disappointed. She's cool and will listen to you and discuss what you want to accomplish. Lisa does my color, and she has done excellent work the past six months I've been going to her. She listens to me and suggests things that I wouldn't know of, and I am definitely so happy with my color!\r The salon itself is low-key and funky --definitely not pretentious, as so many other salons in Houston have proven to be. The price is extremely reasonable, and I have never flinched when told how much I owe. Especially for those living in the Heights, I highly recommend this awesomely comfortable salon! Pros: Low-key atmosphere more

Quality Cuts and Color in an Ecclectic Setting 1/28/2009

I have been going to Cherryl and Meryann for several years now and I have NEVER had a bad experience. They are always extremely professional and are top knotch colorists and stylists. From the moment you walk into SHINE, you feel at home. It is a very ecclectic salon without the uber foo foo BS that goes along with a $300 color and cut salon. The mood is relaxing, the girl talk is therapeutic and the results are simply stunning. Pros: Color technique, cutting/styling, price Cons: parking more
