Shima is so my regular spot!!! So when i say this it has nothing to do with the restaurant Pros: Fresh fish Cons: frizzy lady on the loose

I eat at Shima periodically, and it usually is a pleasant experience. Yesterday I was in a bit of a hurry, so I decided to take out. I ended up waiting on my feet in the restaura...

Sushi was good and the service is 5/28/2012

Decent food friendly staff 12/3/2011

Best part is proximity to east village theatre directly across the street. Sushi is nothing to write home about but is servicable. basically on par with any other reasonably fresh sushi in NY. Have to say the miso soup wss particularly good. Staf is extremely friendly which makes it feel like a nice neighborhood spot. more

Good neighborhood Japanese restaurant 3/15/2010

Another neighborhood sushi restaurant that I have never visited since I moved here but finally paid my visit tonight. I was skeptical because it was right on 2nd Ave. and I suspected it to be a tourist trap. However, after tonight's dinner I was actually surprised. I got the sushi combo, which has 7 pieces of sushi and 1 roll of my choice. The sashimi is not the best quality I have had but it is pretty big and decent. The spicy tuna roll I got is spicy and roll is made well. My friend got their udon soup and it comes in a big pot. It has a lot of ingredients inside and it is very savory too. The total bill came down to about $36 after tax. Not too bad for dinner for two. Pros: Good selection of Japanese food, Fresh sushi more

Amazing food 11/17/2008

We went to Shima before a movie as a last resort but it turned out to be such a great experience we're making it our ""usual""!!! The grilled chilean sea bass was grilled perfectly, totally delicious and the portion was more than generous. The chirashi in any restaurant is a good measure of a good japanese place, the sushi is scattered and often times the ""chef's choice"". If the chef is choosing good, presentable fish in this entree then you know they got it right. We ordered three other appetizers; a chicken dipped in rice cracker and deep fried with green tea dipping salt (amazing), kinpira gobo (marinade lotus roots) and a grilled whole squid. I'm looking forward to having another meal at Shima! Pros: Amazing sushi, great service, never a wait because people have no clue what they're missing! more

Great Value, Great Staff 10/31/2008

Every piece of sushi, sashimi, bento, eda mame, this is to say, absolutely everything has been perfect from the first day - over 7 years ago - I started dining at Shima. A real East Village institution, don't miss eating at Shima. Pros: fresh fish more

great sushi 7/28/2008

great atmosphere, great and fresh food. Easy going restaurant. I am a returning customer at Shima for over 10 yrs. That should say it all...! more

Decent place! 6/27/2008

Service was good and the food came promptly. I feel it's a bit pricey for its niche, but will definitely visit this place again. more

My Favorite Japanese Restaurant 3/5/2008

My first experience with Shima Restaurant was 16 years ago as a college student. The restaurant used to be located on Waverly by NYU. It was the freshest, most affordable Japanese around. My dad had his first Japanese dining experience there and loved it. After college, I went back to Waverly and, much to my chagrin, found it was gone. By chance I found it again about six years ago. I'm so happy to say the food is just as good with a few fusion-inspired flourishes. The location is tightly spaced, but room size be damned, the food and service is so worth it. I highly recommend: Sashimi Salad with Soy Vinegarette, Ring Ring Ring Calamari appetizer and Foie Gras of the Sea appetizer (winter months only). All of their special rolls are worth a try. Pros: Food, Service Cons: Size more

Incredible 7/4/2007

We lived a few blocks from Shima and consider ourselves extremely lucky. We ate here at least 2-3 times per week and I am sure put someone's kid through college. For each of our over 100 meals (easy), the food was always delicious and the waitress extremely friendly. If you are looking for an outstanding meal at a very reasonable price, Shima is the place. I highly recommend the New York, New York platter; it is so good, one does not even need the traditional soy sauce/wasabi mix. If you are having sushi, do not forget to ask for the cilantro sauce accompaniment. Pros: Great food, reasonable price more

Excellent neighborhood sushi 3/15/2006

I was pleasantly surprised when I happened to stop in here with a friend one night after our reservation at a place nearby was mysteriously canceled. The food was really good. I remember we both remarked on the freshness of the fish, and how lovely the decor was. The service could be better, perhaps a little more attentive. But the tuna tataki and the sushi rolls (we ordered 4 different ones) were all delicious. And the price was right. I had never heard of this restaurant before that night, but I am not surprised to find the place full every time I pass by. Pros: great sushi, interesting decor, reasonably-priced more

fabulous 11/21/2005

I love this restaurant! I have lived around the corner for the past 2 and 1/2 years and I have both dined in the restaurant and ordered take out a million times. The staff is incredibly nice and always very accomodating and the sushi is amazing! I am obsessed with the ""shima roll"" and i get it almost every single time. Watch for the Kirin festivals too, which are awesome because they have $2 pints and unlimited edamame. more

what a find! 7/6/2005

Great sushi at moderate prices ! They do not take reservations and it's always crowded, the service was somewhat slow but not terrible but the only thing I really did not enjoy was the fact that the food to our table ( party of 8) was all delivered at different times and was certainly akward. However, the excellent sushi and the prices makes up for everything! Pros: excellent food, good presentation, good ambiance Cons: slow service more

Good deal! 6/17/2004

Shima delivers excellent sushi at very reasonable prices. They offer Edo-style sushi, where the pieces are already seasoned. It can get crowded, but it's one of the best places in the East Village. Pros: fresh sushi, Edo style sushi avail, price more

My favorite area restaurant 5/19/2004

i lived for five years in the area around Shima and the restaurant became a favorite place for me to have birthdays and special occasions. i believe they have the best california roll i have ever had and I enjoy their tuna tataki. i especially enjoy the waitstaff whom treat each table with care and time. yuki and mi hoh are great hosts and the sushi chefs know what they are doing. try the sake sampler for a treat. Pros: , good food Cons: , can be crowded more

again hi expectations... 7/27/2003

i am enticed by reading all the great reviews but again i have been disappointed. the sushi & rolls are good, not great as raved by other reviewers. they are busy so the person who rated this a 3 for pick up had a poor experience. i would agree with their poor impression, but should not be an indictment on their food. SUM IT: i always say try it once but don't read the overly hi rated reviews until you can judge for yourself. Pros: specials Cons: busy busy busy more
