July 25, 2009 My wife and I dined at Shaw’s Crab House Sat night, and it was fantastic. We have eaten out at a lot of seafood restaurants, and we can honestly say that Shaw’s (eit...

The food is generally pretty fresh, but the portions are rather small in proportion to the price charged. Much better for lunch than dinner. Pros: Fresh fish, Atmosphere, Con...

Large Dining Space 5/19/2006

The bathrooms are not just pretty, they're clean! But order specifically. The salmon comes medium rare, against my rules of cooking. I had even asked for it to be fully cooked I have frequently found the service, while good, somewhat inconsistent. THis would be a good place for large groups who have a lot of different tastes. more

Seafood 5/16/2006

This is a really nice restaurant. I prefer to go here for dinner. They have a huge menu with a variety of seafood items. The shrimp seems to be the best. I also like the dessert here. The hot fuge cookie sundae is good. The place is pretty expensive, so I would advice saving it for a "special" night. more

Great Atmosphere 4/28/2006

Shaw's is a sure favorite of ours to enjoy a really nice meal in a great setting. What I like about this place is its atmosphere. It is dimly lighted, with dark wooden furniture. It's a sophisticated place for sure. Their menu is wonderful too. It features fresh seafood specialties and also many steak and meat selections. I like having an elegant meal in a quiet setting here. My husband and I always like to start off at the bar and have a drink casually and them move into our nice booth to enjoy dinner. This palce is pricey but I think it is worth it for the quality food and the great atmosphere. more

Outstanding Seafood 3/3/2006

Shaw's has great seafood, as well as selections for the red meat lover. It's also a great place to go for lunch. One of my favorite dishes is the seafood salad - it comes with a great vinaigrette. The crab legs are also huge and delicious, served hot or cold with drawn better. Shaw's also serves a fine aged steak, as well as other fish entrees. more

Oysters anyone 1/8/2006

I've been to the main location in Chicago, and to the one near Woodfield Mall. I had wonderful food at both. I recommend eating in the bar. It adds charm to the experience, especially if you are going to be eating oysters. They do some amazing specials, just don't have a heart attack when the bill comes. It is expensive, but if you want excellent, fresh, sea food, this is the place to go. more

Reliable sea food joint 12/29/2005

This is one of Rich Melman's early Lettuce entertain you restaurants, and it is still worth a visit if you are a sea food lover. They do good work here. Great, fresh sea food properly cooked, attentive service, enjoyable ambiance; its all here. Pictures of some of their suppliers grace the walls of the Oyster bar, which has a cajun theme. They have live music a few nights a week, or go next door to Andy's before or after you eat and enjoy some great jazz. I have always had good experiences in this place. They have other locations too which I have not been to.Worth a visit! http://www.shawscrabhouse.com/ more

Great seafood... 9/12/2005

Seasonal seafood is flown in daily from the Atlantic, the Gulf and the Pacific Coast to this popular River North spot. Many of the restaurant's fish and seafood suppliers are pictured on the walls of Shaw's Oyster Bar (formerly Blue Crab Lounge), a New Orleans-themed oyster bar with old blues and torch recordings on the sound system. The Bar seats about 120; the main dining room, pricier and more formal, seats 250. Special attractions include "Oyster Hour" 4:30-6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; winemaker dinners pairing seafood with wines; and the weeklong "Royster with the Oyster" festival in October. more

Quality Crab, Premium Seafood & Prime Steaks

Owner Message

  • Shaw's is two restaurants in one ? a jazzy, sophisticated, seafood restaurant and a carefree, lively oyster bar. Both serve top-grade fish and shellfish, several varieties of just-shucked oysters, and inventive sushi and sashimi combinations, made with the freshest fish in town.

The wonderful, sweet crabs vary by season, with Alaskan red king legs, Florida stone crab claws, Maryland blue crab, whole Dungeness and soft shells, plus shrimp, Maine lobster and cold-water tails. Like all our seasonally fresh fish (which is filleted in house), they're chosen with consideration for the environment, often coming from fishing families Shaw's knows personally.

That's not to say meat lovers get short shrift: Hand-selected USDA Prime cuts are on the menu, too. Shaw's also takes pride in the depth and breadth of its wine list, organized for easy selection by taste characteristics.

Editorial

  • The Scene
Clubby ambience and a reputation for excellent food and service draws suits and special-occasion celebrants to this classic Chicago spot. The bar fills with after-work types waiting for a table; some opt for the more casual scene of the adjacent oyster bar. In the banquet-sized dining room, handsome red-leather booths and dark-wood paneling create an upscale scene. There's a hubbub about the place that borders on chaos; no-nonsense servers remain unfazed.

    The Food
Crab dishes get top billing on Shaw's extensive seafood menu, and deservedly so: Crab legs and claws are consistently fresh and satisfying. There are plenty of other reasons to visit, though, from creamy New England clam chowder and cool, shucked-to-order raw oysters to entrees like ruby-red sesame-glazed tuna and a seafood platter with garlic shrimp and sea scallops with meaty lump crab cake. There's also an assortment of fresh nigiri and maki, including excellent spicy tuna and salmon rolls.
