Get the Chai Tea! 1/24/2011

The food is great! Probably the best Indian food in Nashville. The chai tea is rich with flavor and wonderful. The space is cramped, loud, and sometimes hard to have a private conversation. The service is slow. Especially on a busy night. It's a little pricey. Parking can be a drag. All of that being said, I keep going back because I love the food. more

One star Is too much class for Shalimar! 8/7/2010

First off. I believe every Five star rating on this place is bogus. I have personally witnessed every single negative comment that has been posted - over priced lukewarm bland Indian food served on a not so clean plate. As one person has stated, ""how has this place been able to stay in business."" I think it is because of there location and you think , ""this place must be doing something right to be able to stay in this location."" You would do yourself well to stay away. This place can turn you against Indian cuisine and there culture because you will walk away feeling like someone has just stolen money out of wallet! I have had many dining experiences and this has to be my number 1 worst place to eat. more

Forget the Earlier Reviews - Great Food & Great Service 7/6/2010

My experiences with this restaurant always seem to be at a contrast to some of the other reviewers. We had a fabulous time tonight and enjoyed the attentive service as well as the excellent food which we were served. We started with the vegetable samosas. We ordered the vegetable biryani and the vegetable korma, and both were spiced to perfection. I know this is a sparse review in terms of words, but honestly - the food was excellently prepared, the service couldn't have been better, and we had an excellent time as always. Plus, if you're trying to save money, I'd recommend going to the restaurant's website. They have printable coupons. Pros: Attentive service & great food Cons: Parking is scarce more

Hands down, no competition in Nashville 6/1/2009

Great service: They make you feel like you're part of the family.\r \r The best Indian food in town... I should know, I've been studying for MANY years. You won't find better food anywhere. I crave it almost daily.\r \r Try the mango lassi if your food is too spicy. It's a perfect combination... Yummmmm! Pros: Naan and chutneys are superb more

How does this restaurant stay in business! 4/18/2009

As I said above, how does this restaurant stay in business? Does everyone think that because it is in Green Hills, it will be good? Wrong!! I wish I had read the other reviews before dining here! I have eaten Indian food all across the US, in Europe and yes, in India. This restaurant is a sorry excuse not only for Indian cuisine, but for ambiance and service. Basically an all around terrible dining experience! The food is overpriced and exactly as all other negative reviews say, watery, etc... After having a samosa that would have been better from a frozen food section in a grocery store, the dirty plates remained and the main course was brought, with us expecting to continue eating on the same plate. Changing the plate would be the least thing these people could do when you are spending $16.99 for Chicken Vindiloo (that you can get at other Indian restaurnats in Nashville for $10.95). As far as ambiance goes, there is none. The space is tiny, the tables and chairs are out of date and too close to other tables. We could hear the entire conversations of all other four parties in the room. I have never felt this negative about a dining experiece and I feel absolutely ripped off! I am a world traveler and know my stuff, so please do not dine at this restaurant! It does not even rate one star! Pros: None! Cons: Read below more

Overpriced, food not great. 3/27/2009

When you see $15 for a chicken vindaloo on the menu you should expect something good. Not here; I got an average dish with watery sauce. The garlic naan seemed to be fried pizza base with garlic powder too amply sprinkled over the top. Won't be eating here again. Pros: Example: best croissants in town Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

FABULOUS MEAL GREAT EXPERIENCE 3/7/2009

We LOVE Shalimar in Green Hills! Had a wonderful dinner there last night. Not eating out nearly as often now so when we DO we want it to count!!!.Chicken Tikki Masala is my favorite and the thin crispy bread with yogurt sauce is addictive(pappadan?) I am not going to chain restaraunts.!.Cooking at home more now.. Mango lassis are divine. We always park in the back/plenty of room and BYOB saves a LOT/rather spend on the food than double charged for drinks. They wont even charge us a corking ""fee""....sooooo marvelous $12 bottle of wine and fabulous service(attentive but NOT constantly interupting/I hate that/make it a good place for us and now they are open on Sunday we will go there for dinner. Fresh and different food.Never go for med or hot spice though unless very brave:)We like to take friends there when we go out. You never know who you will see there:) Safe Green Hills location.Reading some of the other reviews that are so negative makes me wonder.Never in years have we had a rude or bad experience.I totally respect other peoples opinions but wonder if these are written by competion or something. They sure know how to spell all of the food dishes correctly(I think) ha! just saying........hmmm Pros: healthy food, BYOB(makes it great value for an evening out)NOT a chain, location location Cons: locals know to park in back more

Bad Food Bad Service 1/26/2009

This place is very overpriced. The food is bad, bland, over cooked, and just not good. I'll never go there again. All the server did was take us to our seats and put a pitcher of water on the table. Didn't come back to check on us or anything. If I could give it zero stars I would.\r Pros: Non Cons: Food, Price, Parking, and Service more

Best Indian 1/19/2009

Love, love, love Shalimar! \r \r The food is wonderful, particularly the lamb vindaloos. The service is great and everyone is friendly. It's the perfect place for a relaxed but fun dinner date. \r \r The BYOB policy is definitely an advantage. more

Worst Indian Restuarant in US? 1/14/2009

We visited this restuarant during the X'Mas weekend with a large crowd (14 adults + 3 kids). It was around 2pm and the buffet was on till 2:30. The servers were rude telling us that the cook had already left!!!! In the end since we were hungry we stayed on but we were surprised.\r The food selection is less than 50% from a normal Indian buffett in US. One type of rice, one chicken dish, couple of veges and one dessert. FOOD TASTES BAD!!! While we watched they added virtually uncooked chick peas in to the existing dish and mixed it. The Chicken tasted stale and the Nan was bad too.\r They made no attempt to treat such a large crowd. The restuarant is very small in size too.\r The people there have an attitude and YOU GET ALL THIS FOR $15/-. THIS IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE INDIAN LUNCH BUFFET I've been to. This is a total RIPOFF IN BROAD DAYLIGHT.\r TRY ANOTHER PLACE AND SAVE YOUR ENEGERY (AND ANGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Pros: Nothing!!! Cons: Very high price, poor quality food, rude people (what else do you need for $15)??? more

Bad food! Bad service! Bad pricing! 1/6/2009

This restaurant does not deserve to be rated with even a single star. The food is horrible and lacks variety and COMPLETELY overpriced at $15/- for a lunch buffet. But most of all the staff/management are RUDE and UNPROFESSIONAL and clearly have not heard the phrase ""customer is king"" . This restaurant needs to be trained on how to treat thier customers with respect since we ARE paying for our food and service. Cons: rude staff, no taste n variety in food, overpriced more

79% Health Code Score + Cramped+ Tiny Portions+Expensive= Would rather walk to India than go back 11/10/2008

\r Holy Crap------------>a 79% on Health Code Score? Does it go any lower?\r - Waiter was irritable when I asked if I could get a combination of chicken and lamb on a grill platter.\r -Price are just silly bad compared to similar places\r -Portions.....are stupid tiny. (Lamb Vindaloo had about three small pieces of lamb for around $10 + Aloo Gobi $9+ Chicken Vindaloo $14.00 + Sopping wet greasy Garlic Naan= Not enough for two people to eat. Plus, my wife got severe stomach cramps about 10 mins afterward (this was a first)\r \r Been around to 38 states and had Indian cuisine in all of them. This is the absolute worst. Avoid like the plague. Place is tiny and cramped. Will not return for any reason. Cons: Read Review more

Poor quality and extremely expensive for Indian food 10/17/2008

The food was super greasy and WAY overpriced. I paid nearly $50 (with a coupon!!!) for a dinner for two to go. The chicken tikka masala was tough and dry, the chana masala had no flavor but lots of grease, and the alu ghobi was limp and watery. Way to much money for poor quality. I could get better chana masala from the microwavable packets at Whole Foods.\r \r Will never go back. Cons: tiny portions, no flavor, really overpriced, bad parking more

wonderful aromas, hot, fresh everything! 7/15/2008

i ate at shalimar tonight with a friend, we both had chicken masala and shared some garlic naan and saag aloo. everything was steaming when it came to our table, and i could tell everything they used was fresh. the service was a little slow but the staff was gracious and accommodating. i have been shying away from indian food for a while, but now i'm not afraid of it... i loved everything i had! i wanted to try a vegetarian entree and some different flavors of naan. there is a lot to choose from! Pros: fresh food, wonderful flavors Cons: parking more

Overpriced, tiny portions, greasy bread 6/13/2008

I work in Green Hills, was starving at 5pm and didn't want to cook my own dinner. I ordered take out from Shalimar and dropped by on my way home. I had ordered Palak Paneer, Channa Masala and Garlic Naan. I was astonished to pay $22 for the teeny-tiny side-order portions of the 2 dishes and some greasy, pizza-bread like thing that didn't remotely resemble any naan I've ever seen. I was so shocked I almost turned around and took it back, but I was so hungry I couldn't find the energy. The Paneer was decent, the Channa Masala I can make better myself and the bread was confusing, awful and disappointing. Naan is a flatbread, chewy in texture and definitely not dripping in oil.\r \r I have dined at hole-in-the-wall Indian restaurants around the world that were far better and have also enjoyed Michelin-starred Indian restaurants in London that were more reasonably priced. What a shame and shame on you Shalimar for such outrageous prices and minimal effort on your part. Never again! Pros: None. Cons: Overpriced, bad, bad food. more

Best in town! 4/10/2008

Not only does Shalimar have the best Indian food in town, it is the best delivery, eat-in and ethnic ""comfort food"" rolled into one! The food is always fresh and piping hot. The Tikka Masala is excellent. At the end of the meal, enjoy a cup of chai. This reviewer never even liked chai until tasting Shalimar's wonderful blend. The staff is FANTASTIC! Everyone is kind and helpful. \r Sadly, we are moving from Nashville soon and I honestly don't know what I'll do without my weekly dose of Shalimar!! Pros: Delivery, Food, Service more

Excellent! 3/6/2008

I took my husband here for his birthday on February 8, 2008. It was his first time ever having real Indian food, and my second. The food was excellent! We both got something completely different, and made sure to try some appetizers, dessert, and Indian tea as well. We left very satisfied and excited that we found a new place to dine! Beware of the spicy-ness though! My husband thought he would try the HOT level because it couldnt be ""that bad."" He sure was eating his words! He still ate it all. I got my food on medium heat and it was perfect. We will definitely return. Pros: Authentic food, romantic atmosphere at night Cons: Parking is scarce, reservations are REQUIRED! No walk-ins. more
