Funky Neighborhood Spot 7/16/2009

I would give them more stars 'cause I've always had a decent to good experience here, but reading the bad reviews I can see how it could get bad here. They aren't really set up for the volume that they handle here -the kitchen area is pretty small. The staff is usually ok, nothing amazing but decent. The food is good, plentiful and cheap. The coffee is good. The clientel gets a little interesting at times...great for people watching to say the least. Basically, it's a fun little spot for breakfast and coffee, but you do get what you pay for - sometimes literally. more

There should be an option to give no stars 6/23/2009

The Service: Order was flung at me by a waitress who gruffly said, "here you go" she never actually stopped moving. Pausing long enough to see if it was the right order might be worthwhile. I do not ask Waitresses who do not wish to be bothered to be bothered. I walked the food given me back to the cashier and asked for my money back. I was told that I could ask the cook and the waitress to be bothered again. I said I just wanted my money back. The prices are pretty cheap there if you get food. They are steep when you don't. I didn't. I rank them as very expensive. Getting my money back was not an option apparently. I basically feel like I was robbed in this place. I would not ever go back. I would not recommend to anybody, friend or enemy. more

Shakabrah Java - One of a kind 3/4/2006

Shakabrah is a real, genuine 'coffeehouse' of the type you usually only hear about. Not only is there a large selection of coffee flavorings, cookies, and other treats, but there is also "real food" and entertainment. A menu offers everything from breakfast pancakes to turkey dinners. Large portions, too! The prices are a little on the high side, but actually there is enough for two on one plate if you can both agree on the choice. ;-) Books line the shelves along the side, and people often sit and read while sipping coffee or eating a meal. But the entertainment room is the best part. A small stage, many tables and chairs (mismatched, of course!), sound equipment, lighting - it's a genuine flashback to the '60's and the 'coffeehouses' of fame. Sliding doors shut the room off from the other section, and a small hall leads to the restrooms in the back. Most unique of all, though, is a genuine old wooden telephone booth, which actually still seems to work. I've never seen one anywhere else! more

Great coffee shop and cafe 8/17/2005

Shakabrah is a funky little place that functions primarily as a coffee shop, but serves some awesome breakfast food. Service for most of the week is at the counter, but Saturday and Sunday mornings they offer sit-down breakfast service. My money is on the huevos rancheros for the best menu item, but there are some good scrambles and stuff as well. Lots to offer for both carnivores and non-carnivores. Also, sandwiches and beer by the bottle, which I guess is more appropriate food for the open-mics and other evening entertainment. Wonderful, cozy, funky atmosphere, local artists hanging on the walls, borrowable books on the shelves, etc. Definitely my fave local coffee shop. more
