good quiet bar for a weeknight. 6/5/2010

Located on California in West Seattle this bar is so dark from the outside it looks like it is closed causing you to have to squint to verify there are actually people inside. Inside its lite by candlelight. Perhaps this is where it gets its name. This can be appealing for a quiet night with a friend. Happy hour is often both early and late night and has a variety of options including 6$ hummus, full menu is also available. Bartender is friendly. Art is entertaining. Bathroom is not notable which seems odd for the rest of the decor. Outside seating area near the door. Street parking only. Pros: happy hour, roomy, dark Cons: street parking more

Most interesting paintings on the walls 6/4/2010

I've driven by this place a zillion times and finally stopped in with a friend of a drink. We arrived just in time for happy hour (10p.m.-12) but we were full from dinner so we didn't experiment with the happy hour food menu. I got a well drink which was pretty pricey. I guess I should have expected that since it does look pretty swanky. Pros: unique, interesting Cons: pricey more

Stylish spot for a night cap 1/26/2010

A friend and I stopped in on a Friday night to grab a bite to eat before heading downtown. All tables were full but it was a short wait. I like the layout with bar height tables in the front and parallel to the actual bar and then booths and tables in the back for a cozier, more quiet area. I ordered the wedge salad which was really salty, not only the dressing but then the plethora of bacon was just over the top. With a little tweaking and a better balance of the ingredients, it could be a winner. We split the hummus which was tasty, the warm pieces of pita bread made it delicious. Highlight for me was the grilled prawns with hush puppies. Pros: Location, service, singing patrons Cons: singing patrons :) more

Style and food collide in West Seattle 4/11/2008

Good Variety and Great Food 4/3/2008

I have eaten there 3 times and have enjoyed myself each time. The first time with a couple of friends, we shared a table-full of small entrees and everything was delicious. The second time I tried a large entree, the roasted chicken, and it was divine. The mashed potatoes were buttery and creamy and I've never tasted chicken so flavorful. And their cocktails are very good. The service was a bit slow (we had dirty plates and empty glasses in front of us for a bit too long) so don't be shy and just get the server's attention. more

Overpriced. Mediocre Food. So-so Service. 3/7/2008

I was disappointed with my visit to Shadowland. The waiter took forever to come to our table despite a sparse crowd. I think he was too busy chatting with the other hipsters on the wait staff. The overpriced food wasn't good. The mac and cheese drowning in cinnamon was disgusting. The pita and hummus was okay but not any better than something from the grocery store. The decor wasn't anything special, looking slapped together and then lit dimly in an attempt to cover it up. The booth was uncomfortable. The only saving grace was the really cool bartender. He was really nice and picking up the slack for the slacker waiter. Will be avoiding this place. Pros: Cool Bartender. Cons: Overpriced. Bad Food. Bad service. more
