A veritable East Coast consignment institution, Second Time Around first launched in Boston some 40 years ago. This outpost (the company’s 27th store and its third location in New York City) is tidy and straightforward. A three-month consignment cycle gives sellers a finite period during which to wait for their take (40 percent of any sale), and gives buyers the chance to wait for steeper and steeper discounts. Goods are typically sold for as little as a third or a quarter of their retail value, depending upon their condition. No matter what, everything is discounted again during its third month on the shelf. Expect to find garments like a Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent cardigan ($128) hanging out next to J Brand jeans ($86) and vintage opal teardrop earrings ($34).
