I'd used this company a couple of times for some minor repairs & the installation of a garbage disposal, and while not overwhelming impressed by the service or the competency of it service people, I believed them to be honest.
That was until I needed service of a wall oven in the early part of 2012. I paid $70 for the owner (who also owns the local Sears franchise) to come over to evaluate the problem. He decided it was a faulty electronic part and suggested that I replace the oven (for somewhere around $1400 -- at Sears, of course), or I could replace the part for roughly $200. When I weighed the cost effectiveness, I decided to go with the repair/replacement of the electronic part.
I had to pay for the part upfront, and did so with the expressed (verbal) warranty that if the part didn't fix the problem, my credit card would be credited the amount it was charged. That was the agreement.
Two days later, the part was installed and appeared to work for all of twenty minutes while the repairman (son of owner & also co-owner) was still on the premises. I asked at that time about a warranty on the part and was told 90 days.
A day later when I went to use the oven for the first time, it shut down after reaching 350-degrees for about an hour, and thereafter wouldn't heat at all. I called Mike (the owner) and explained the situation. He balked at returning my money after previously guaranteeing he would. I reminded him of the 90-day warranty, and he said, okay he would honor that, and would send his son over that day to collect the part. That was the last I heard from him. I never was able to get back in touch with him again. No one came to my house to take out the defective part, and Mike, the owner, never returned phone calls. I finally filed a dispute with my credit card and prevailed; they reversed the charges after sixty days. I was told that they never responded to the credit card inquiries either. My feeling is they did not purchase this part from my oven's manufacturer as stated, but had a part 'laying around' and used it with the hope that it would work.
Mike and his son, are obviously very unprofessional, liars, and, in my case, thieves. I will never use this company again. I've since heard other complaints about them. In such a small community, such a company cannot hope to succeed and stay in business.
Fortunately we have an honest appliance repair company in the Brookings/Harbor area: Chetco Appliance. They have been in business in the area for decades and never ask for repair costs up front. They are a solid, reliable company, which I had used prior to ever using South Coast Appliance Company.
