Best In Minneapolis 9/9/2011

Scott Ja-Mama's is Good Eating Ribs 10/14/2010

I have been going to Scott Ja-Mama's for many years and always have enjoyed their great food. I stumbled upon his tiny shop, across from the Holiday station, and had a rack. WOW!! Now, I'm a fan of Market BBQ and Famous Dave's, but will take Scott's over both. His Pulled Pork sandwiches taste great and are priced just right. Scott's the cook with family helping out. Theme is Hole in the Wall, Three Stooges, Wizard of Oz with a little Vern Gagne tossed in. They have a table to sit at and you can street park or slide in out back. Try them!! more

Scotts is the best in the twin cities 6/4/2010

I had heard all about this place from a lot of people, so i had to try it and it did not disappoint. The people there are so friendly. The food was incredible. I had the pork sandwich and a full rack with mild sauce which cant miss. They are open Wednesday through Saturday and they deliver everyday after 5 p.m. It is a good place to eat in if it isnt busy. It was some of the best barbecue I have ever had. Pros: friendly people, great food, delivery more

Only ok 1/7/2010

The service was great, but the food missed the mark. The sauce was decent, but the ribs were pretty dried out and lacking real meat. I twice baked potatos and chicken are both delicious. Pros: Chicken/Potatos Cons: Ribs more

I cant complimentthis place enough 1/6/2010

My dad and I stopped by this place last night. I've traveled a fair amount and love to try new places to eat. This is the only place that has motivated me enough to sign up for a review site and write a positive review. WOW. I have never had such wonderful service. Great food, Great prices, and the most friendly people you could ever find at a place to eat. The only downside tot his review is that by sharing such a great place... I have to share it. Thanks Scott Ja-mama's, I'll be back. Pros: SERVICE!!!!!!! FOOD!!!!! PRICE!!!!!!!! Cons: Zip more

Outstanding Southern Barbecue; Best BBQ Chicken in the area 7/6/2008

I had the spareribs and the chicken. The ribs were outstanding, but they were a little dry. The dryness takes them down a peg from the extreme top tier represented by Baker's Ribs and Qfanatic--but they are still very good and recommended. However, the chicken was a revelation; some of the best I've ever had, and certainly the best in the TC area that I've tried. Pros: The CHICKEN! Cons: No real seating more

What a waste of time!!!! 5/30/2007

Drove 30 minutes out of our way only to be told they were out of ribs for 45 minutes. Out of Ribs? At a Rib Joint? We won't waste our time again. Cons: don't keep their main item in stock more

I don?t understand the hype about this place 2/10/2007

I am always searching for a good BBQ place, after trying so many bad BBQ places in Minneapolis I lowered my expectations. I am searching for a somewhat decent BBQ place in Minneapolis. Anyway, I went there today, I had the ribs which were so dry and no meat on them.I watched him cook the ribs and he was cooking them on the grill. I also had the steak sandwich which was good. I liked the guy, he seemed like a good guy. Pros: Good BBQ sauce Cons: Dry ribs more

Ribs? I thought it was the bottom of a sneaker! 9/14/2005

The other day my work brought me by Scotts. I had seen a high rating on city search for it so I figured I'd stop in (Around 8pm). I ordered a full rack. Took them home and first tasted the sauce. It tasted pretty good. Then I tried a rib. Dry, No Meat, Oven Cooked, and poor quality. I was disappointed but thought maybe it was to late and got a bad rack. I stopped there today at 11:15am figured get them for lunch. Got back to the office. SAME THING! I dont know about you but I feel that ""just because you put some BBQ sauce on some meat don't mean its BBQ. For those of you who gave this a thumbs up, next time try Old County Buffet. I'm sure it's right up you alley. Pros: Good Sauce, Friendly Serice, Ma & Pop Feel Cons: Not BBQ, Oven Cooked, No Smoke Flavor more

Best for catering parties 7/24/2005

I do alot of catering to offices and at home. Everyone LOVES the BBQ Pork sandwiches and twice baked potatoes. But, what you don't know is that Scott himself does shredded chicken sandwiches too!! It is to die for. But, you have to specially order it, it's not on the menu. The ribs have been hit or miss for me too, but the shredded stuff is always excellent and easy to order by the pound, and works great in crock pots for large events. Pros: taste, takeout, variety Cons: not open on mondays, not open on Tuesdays, no parking more

Inspect the ribs before you leave! 7/18/2005

Carry out only - i heard great things about this BBQ so i went there, the food was pretty good. the sauce was spicy and tasty. The slabs of ribs were pretty decent, meaty with lots of sauce. Second time I went there, the ribs were dried out, I mean Petrified dry. I carried out and didn't open the canister until I got home, so I didn't want to drive back 10 miles. So if you go to this place, open the ribs and inspect them before going out the door. $10 a person for half rack, pretty spendy for something you can't eat if you get the bad lot of ribs. I am shocked they even gave these away to someone to eat. Therefore, I have to rate them low. Quality always should come first and not meeting a deadline on getting an order out the door. Pros: Quick preparation, Tasty sauce Cons: Hit or miss on ribs, no room to eat in, Kinda spendy more

Best ribs in the city 2/2/2004

Scott's has the best ribs in Mpls. As other's have said you can miss the place if you don't pay attention and call ahead to order so you don't have to wait. The ribs are meaty, cooked to perfection and come with a midly sweet but spicy sauce. You can get mild, medium or spicy sauce. The spicy will cause the back of your neck to sweat! The twice baked potatoe is to die for. I hit Scott's up 2 to 3 times per month and it's well worth the drive from almost anywhere. Pros: The Ribs, Twice Baked Potatoe, Inexpensive more

This place rocks!!!! 4/3/2003

Never in my life have i felt so wonderful stuffing my face. The people there are so welcoming and friendly that its hard to leave once you've got your food. The ribs were spectacular not to mention the sauce. I would be content with this being the only place I ever eat out. When it comes to a comfy place to find a great deal, Scott-Ja-Mamas is the place to be. Thanks for giving the city a true feeling of home. Pros: people, food, fun Cons: not open sundays more

a hole in the wall with bbq gold 3/6/2003

Right across the street from the Gas station, you gotta look hard or you are gunna miss it. Call ahead, there is like no space inside to wait. The food is cheap and abundant (though I never got a twice baked potato the size of anyone's foot) For $5 you can get a huge pork sandwich (very very messy and wet) coleslaw,& a bag of chips. I've had the chicken and the ribs too but that sandwich is sooo good and reasonable that's usually all I get. They don't advertise, apparently they are at full capacity for what they can do in that space now... So the poeple that don't know never will-good more for me. I have no problem driving from maple grove to south minneapolis to get it. Pros: taste Cons: space more

Simply the Best Ribs 2/12/2003

The ribs at this take-out only joint are the best I have tasted anywhere. They are flavoured with an irrestible sweet, fruity, and spicy sauce and are nice and tender. The staff is always friendly and the prices are reasonable. Call ahead to avoid a long wait. Pros: Friendy staff, Tasty fare Cons: Parking more

ALMOST MISSED IT, BUT GLAD WE DIDN'T 1/3/2003

THE PEOPLE WHO WORKED THERE WERE EXTREMELY FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL AS WE WERE FIRST TIME GUESTS. WE EVEN GOT A FREE EXTRA STUFFED POTATO, ALTHOUGH THEY WERE NOT AS BIG AS WE HOPED, BUT YOU COULDN'T BEAT THE PRICE! THE RIBS HAD THAT DOWN HOME BACKYARD FLAVOR AND THE SAUCE WAS A GREAT TASTING CHANGE FROM FAMOUS DAVES AND RUDOLPHS. WE TOOK OUR FOOD HOME IN A GROCERY BAG AND HAD A LIP-SMACKING GOOD TIME! BY THE WAY, SCOTT'S IS LITERALLY A HOLE IN THE WALL, SO SLOW DOWN OR YOU JUST MIGHT MISS IT. Pros: GOOD VALUE, NO THEME DECORATIONS Cons: WHAT PARKING? more

Comes real close, but still lookin' 1/3/2003

I've been searching for a BBQ joint to call home in the Twin Cities based upon my addiction to smoky, southern-style BBQ. I'm pretty washed out on the ultra-KC-sauced pork and beef roasts that pass for BBQ in this town. I've done Dave's, Baker's, Rudolph's, Market, Pickled Parrot... Scott's falls behind Baker's in ribs for me, but comes #1 so far for the BBQ Pork sandwich. That said, Ja-Mama's sauce is still too cloyingly sweet with not enough vinegar and smoothness, and the amount of pepper in the sauce is distracting. The pork doen't have near enough smokeyness contained in it. I'll go back, but not until I hit the rest of the teeny joints. Pros: great service, tasty, quick Cons: sketchy parking more

BONE DRY 12/4/2002

These used to be good ribs. The last few times I've gone the ribs taste like they are 3-4 days old. Not very good quality meat and very OVER cooked. Pros: Not buzy Cons: over cooked, day old ribs more

Best BBQ in town 10/3/2002

Small neighborhood place offers the most tastiest pork barbeque sandwich in town - filling, zesty, and overflowing with flavor. I go out of my way to pick up the pork sandwich (and the coleslaw is pretty good as well). I prefer to order the bread on the side. One order is more than enough to feed 2 people. However, this is really only a place for takeout. Order it for pickup on your way home from work and you're set for the night. Pros: Taste, value Cons: no seating, take out only more

Inside, there are just two tables (and the chairs at one of them seem to be 90 percent duct tape), since most folks just get takeout. The menu is short and sweet: large and meaty...
