Schumer's Wine & Liquors

I am truly surprised to have read the 6/25/08 review above. My experience couldn't be more different. I shop at Schumer's in person occasionally, and sometimes I make orders for delivery over the phone. Since the first day I walked in there, I have never had to tell them my name. They know what kind of wine I like. They have frequently made recommendations that have been consistently wonderful. The staff on the telephone also know me, even though I call maybe once or twice a month. When I come home from work, the wine is always there and always good. Prices are lower than any other wine store in the area that I know of, and if you want something special, they can get it for you. Schumer's is a wine store staffed and operated by people who know and love wine. I highly recommend them. more

I URGE you not to shop at this wine store on East 54th street between Madison and Park. \r \r Before last night's Philharmonic concert in NYC, I stopped into this wine shop for a couple of bottles of wine - I work around the corner so its pretty convenient and frequented by many of the finance professionals who work in the area (myself included). \r \r As I typically do when shopping, I crossed out my credit card number on the receipt, except for the last 4 digits. The manager of the shop began to yell at me, telling me how I had no right to cross out my credit card number, how I didn't even ask him if I could do it, how his is a legitimate business and practically threw me out of the store. He didn't give me a chance to explain, nor did he explain. It was just a sudden beratement - he was very, very angry. \r \r I don't care if this store is the most convenient for you, please don't shop there. I am a professional woman, well dressed and educated, not some slob off the street. I expect to be treated with respect and consideration while shopping, the same treatment I extend to those working in the service/retail industry. I also expect to have the RIGHT to protect my personal, financial information like my credit card number, without being berated in a store by the manager - yelling at me and treating me as if I'm a criminal. \r \r I URGE you not to shop at this wine store. Patrons should NOT be subject to this kind of treatment nor should the owners/managers profit off of this kind of behavior. Cons: Very angry manager, treats customers with a lack of respect. more
