Great downtown salon 6/4/2010

I went here yesterday for a complimentary color service that I received. Upon entering the salon I was really surprised it was a Vidal Sassoon salon. It is just plain ugly and outdated. But then again, I guess you can’t judge a book by its cover. The service was friendly when I arrived and I didn’t have to wait long for Jennifer to be ready to see me. She was very friendly and really listened to what I wanted. She was honest that se couldn’t get my hair color 100% as blonde as the photo I brought in with just highlights. I appreciate the honesty, because I hate when people tell you they can give you the world and don’t deliver. She did a really amazing job. My highlights look really natural, which I love. Melissa blow dried and styled my hair. She was really friendly and I can’t wait to go back to get my hair cut by her. I give it 4 stars because if I didn’t have a complimentary service I NEVER would be able to afford going here. Color runs $200+ and hair cuts $130. WOW expensive. Pros: Great service Cons: Ugly salon, expensive more

okay 5/3/2009

this place is good. the staff are very nice and will really assist you. i will recommend this to my friends. good job. more

not impressed 9/3/2008

We discussed the cut first, didn't turn out anything like she discribed. This was the salon director! She was distracted the whole time while cutting my hair, even arguing with an employee about when she was leaving. Would never return to vidal again. Horrible. more

Avoid Avoid and well Avoid 10/30/2007

Terrible place to get your hair colored or cut!! Total and complete waste of money. You are better off doing it yourself !\r They talk your brains off and fail to pay attention to their work. As soon as they are done, they will rush you out of there!! \r Do not be fooled by the Academy label....seems to me their stylists were rushed out of school.\r Pros: nice ambiance, great location Cons: Unskilled, Expensive, more

So overrated! 9/7/2007

For a big name like that, the salon on Sutter didn?t live up to it at the very least. \r I paid $80 for the simplest cut ever, only to realize the ?stylist? didn?t touch my layers, and only took off 2? of my ends. \r OK, but I have layers, which need to be touched up, right? She cut it way shorter than I wanted? and did I mention ? unevenly?\r The clerk at the reception made me pay ahead, saying they were closing soon, which made me feel rushed.\r I got some coupons for discount services, but since I am not planning to go back there, I?ll give them to you if you still want to check it out.\r Feel free to email me :) Pros: You can tell your friends you went there... Cons: Way too expensive more

A Cut Above 11/27/2006

\r 1. I'm going to have a fabulous Christmas - or at least look fabulous.\r 2. I had a modern, sophisticated haircut from a senior stylist named Philip Thomsett. A dapper gentleman - quiet, attentive and focused.\r 3. Here's a visual: think Faye Dunaway in Bonnie and Clyde but a smidgeon longer and lifted in the back.\r 4. Expensive ($105) - so what? He took almost two hours cutting my hair - making sure I was pleased.\r 5. The salon was clean. I don't know if its a hair academy, if it is, hopefully he's teaching. All the women had chic, futuristic haircuts (no horsehair).\r 5. I recommend asking for a senior stylist. Why risk getting a bad haircut? Unless you are fresh faced and can pull anything off. Well maybe with expensive shoes, of course.\r 6. Be proactive - bring mag photos. Look closely at the cut BEFORE YOU LEAVE. Take a look behind your head, mirror in hand.\r 7. Philip shaped my hair exactly the way I asked him to - what more can you ask for. :)\r more

Poor Service, average cuts, very high prices 11/9/2006

I use to go to this salon years ago (1990's) and returned recently to check it out again. I understand it is now owned by the same company which also owns Supercuts, which speaks for itself. The stylist was 20 minutes late. He then asked what I wanted done. When I asked for suggestions, he said he was going on break and would return when I made up my mind what I wanted. When he returned, he insisted I pay in advance because the cashier wanted to close out the register early. If I hadn't already paid I would have walked out, wet hair and all. The cut was ok, but not great (think Supercut quality). The price was insane for the quality of the cut and experience. The store's manager was in earshot of all of this and did nothing. Save your money and try somewhere else. This is simply a training school for new stylists, many of whom are clearly not ready for paying customers. Pros: Union Square location, ease of getting an appointment. Cons: Poor staff attitudes, high prices, very average haircuts, late for appointments more

Expensive, but you may get it just right 9/20/2006

I had a great haircut here by a senior stylist, and I think this is the way to go, if you're a newcomer to the salon, and have ample budget. I tried a junior stylist as well, to try to cut costs, and I wasn't happy at all - I think she had recently finished the Vidal Sassoon School - not that that necessarily means a person can't cut yet! Anyway - it's expensive, and I feel like you should get a great cut with a junior or senior stylist. I'm looking elsewhere, but if you find the right person here, you may just luck out. I would get a recommendation from someone who loves them. Pros: It's Vidal Sassoon! Cons: Expensive, Not Guaranteed A Great Cut more

It's not vidal sassoon from LONDON 3/4/2006

I was a Tourist and I needed to do my hair, color, HL and cut and I told me , let's go to the best. But unfortunately, it was the worst. they called it ""academy"" but all stylists should go back to school. Those stylists thought, they were god, but they just work here, because of the famous name of the salon. Trust me, sasson in SF is horrible, go to london it's the true one hair salon.. sorry but this is the real world !!!! Cons: the most expensive , ridiculous prices, ridiculous name more

Stylists excellent, students disaster! 9/12/2005

I got a haircut at Vidal from one of the students and it is one of the worst haircuts Ive ever gotten. She ended up cutting way more than I wanted; the haircut she gave me was not what we agreed on before she started. After I washed it, the site wasnt pretty. It was completely uneven, with really weird layers, which make my hair curly and frizzy and my hair is straight! Its too short at this point to go and have it fixed so Im just waiting it out and wearing my hair up a lot. I would never see one of the students again. I did see one of their regular stylists before, and she did an excellent job, but the haircut was so expensive thought Id save money by trying this $16 version, but it ended up being very disappointing! more

The Worst Ever!! 3/7/2005

I would say hands down this is the worst place to get a haircut. I would not recommend it to anyone who has long or curly hair. I went to get a haircut, although a couple of my friends had warned me not to go here. I told the stylist I wanted my hair a couple of inches shorter, but basically the same style as I had. She said ok, and started cutting from the back, basically chopping off about 6 inches of hair. I was pretty mad, and she responded by saying that curly hair needs to be this length to be manageable and healthy. I ended up leaving. I ended up getting it fixed by someone else, and it took my hair a year to grow back. I guess they only cater to people who have straight hair and want some version of a bob. Pros: clean, good location Cons: no skills more

More info on the hair model program 2/4/2005

Model calls are on Thursdays at 6pm. The teacher talks to you about what you want done and sets you up with an appointment. They don't do trims because it is a teaching environment. It isn't free - they charge $16. The students aren't stylists-in-training or amateurs. They are already licensed stylists who want to learn how to cut hair the Vidal Sassoon way. Also, the teacher is there the whole time guiding them. Normally, haircuts range from $60-$120. Cons? Appointments fill up fast so you may have to wait 3 weeks. The cut takes 2 hours. Outside of the classroom, Tricia cut my hair and she did an amazing job. It's the most precise cut I have ever had and it is so unique. She spent 1.5 hours! The shape is amazing and requires very little after-shower styling or product to make it look good. Pros: Hair Model Program, Tricia, Great Haircuts Cons: Normal Cuts Expensive more

LOVE it !!! 12/21/2004

Ali, You Rock.. I had never received so many compliments in my life about my hair cut. I feel so great and confident. I cant wait for my next appointment. Pros: value, quality more

O My... My 6/27/2004

Debra did my hair and it was excellent. She really listened to what I had to say and was focused on her work. I wanted a classic A-line style and that was precisely what I got. The cut is shorter on the back and longer on the front. She had my hair at a Perfect length. Looked around the salon, every body had fabolous hair and color. The only downside is they are very pricey. Yes, I'd definitely come back... perhaps in the next several months... Don't think I can afford spending $100 for hair cut every other month. Pros: Skillful, Good Costumer Service, Easy Access more

New Do 5/8/2004

I was new to the city and needed a new haircut. My hair was so long, and I was worried about getting a drastic cut, but the staff made me feel very comfortable, and Ali, who styled my hair, was great. She took so much time and made sure everything was perfect. They did a fabulous job, and I'll definately be going back! Pros: Very open, Very personal, Reasonable prices more

great experience 5/2/2004

I went to Vidal Sassoon as a ""model"" for their teaching demonstration and had a blast. The teacher, Michael, worked magics to my hair. The whole experience was a lot of fun. The students watching were extremely interesting and involved with the whole experience. I came out with a great haircut, for FREE. I would go back for future haircuts, even if I had to pay. Pros: Great services more

Worst hair experience ever 11/9/2002

I have to say I had a traumatic experience here. I went to the salon for change my hair to a reddish shade and specifically asked for two things - that the color not be darker than my natural color (I'm really pale and have tried this before and don't suit it) and that the color not be permanent . Both of these were ignored. I had really horrible dark red hair for months which made me look about 10 years older. I started coloring my hair at home after that experience. more

Fabulous!!! 10/25/2002

The hairstylist there, Mikey, is soo awesome!!! He cut my hair and I love it. My hair used to be past my armpits and he cut a nice short layered cut a little below my shoulder. It comes to my collar bone. Tips about going. I called the day I wanted to get my hair cut and lucked out. SOmeone had cancelled. So i got in! So worth the 16 bucks. It took a little under 2 hrs. but it was such a precise cut. Every detail was so exact. I definitely recommend it. more
