be aware! this place used to be good years ago but not anymore. tonkatsu was frozen, just heated in micro. one sure way to know that this place is not run by japanese: they would never charge for hot tea like they do now. more

We had a party of six. After ordering, everybody got their food except for one of my friends. He had ordered the Tempura Ramen. He waited for 10 minutes before asking where his order was. They delivered his order immediately. It was lukewarm. The tempura batter had been soaked through and was beginning to disintegrate. Pros: None. Cons: Service. more

I have been going to Sapporo-ya since I was a child, and have enjoyed their miso ramen. I've even had miso ramen in Japan on several occasions, and Sapporo-ya's is the BEST. I literally compare all other miso ramens to Sapporo-ya's and I have yet to enjoy any other miso ramen the way I enjoy the one here. I can't comment on any of the other ramens or dishes at Sapporo-ya because I always order the same thing whenever I go. I used to live in the area and would come here often for dinner. It's always been weird for me to see mostly white guys sitting with their Japanese girlfriends, who pour their beer and wait on them like servants. I don't get it. Anyway, the food is terrific (their soba bowls and chasu ramen bowls are AMAZING) and there's a great crepes place across the way to get afterwards. The Japantown Restaurant Mall is one of those buildings that are almost mystical in their ability to contain so many neat little restaurants such as this one. Pros: ramen, soba Cons: bit pricey more

This is the place to go for that staple Japanses comfort food, ramen noodles. Yes, just like the stuff from college, but with real meat and vegetables. Or ramen servings were big, tasty and generous with meats and vegetables, if a little expensive. We had the chashu ramen and tempura ramen and would recommend both. The ambience is nothing spectacular, sort of your standard Japanese greasy spoon with well-worn, diner-style furniture and flourescent lighting. This need not be a concern however as you will mostly be hunched down slurping the noodles and soup! Service was fast, friendly and responsive. This place has been here in J-Town for as long as I can remember, way before there was a Kabuki Movie Theater etc. and although most people come here for the ramen, it is perhaps best known by the locals ( born and raised in San Francisco, like myself) for the gyoza. This place has the very BEST gyoza , both the pork and the vegetarian! We go here at least once a week for our gyoza fix!! Their tempora ramen is also a favorite of mine but I would not recommend their chicken teriyaki. For whatever reason, their teriyaki leaves much to be desired. The marinade is too sweet almost syrupy without the classic ginger, garlic,soy and smoke combination that is synonymous with good teriyaki. A better choice here would be their pork katsu with curry. This is a very fine dish, with enough spice along with crunchy but moist cutlet. Overall, this gem is always consistant with very apt and polite service. You can't miss with Sapporo-Ya. When I first went to this restaurant I thought ""theres no way I'm spending $10 on a bowl of noodles"" I'VE BEEN BACK A DOZEN TIMES!!! This is a must visit when in Japantown. My favorite is the Kimchi/Ramen bowl!!! You will get full and leave very satisfied. There is more than Ramen here too... The Pork Cutlet in Curry is delicious. more

An unusual combination- the best in category combined with LOW prices. I've travelled extensively (including many trips to Japan) and the char siu ramen here ranks among the top three I've slurped up... probably the best I've had anywhere, certainly for the price! Ample slices of pork- not too fatty, not too lean- with piping hot broth and hand made ramen. The noodles are consistently excellent. A weekly ritual for my wife and me. Run don't walk.......... I've been coming to Sapporo-Ya for years and there's rarely ever a Sunday that passes where we don't hit this great noodle joint! The ramen is incredible! The broth is so savory and aromatic that it's addicting! Our favorites are the Soy Sauce Ramen and Cold Ramen, which by the way, is the best cold noodle dish in SF! I remember going here all the time with my family when I was younger. It's been about 20 years and Sapporo-ya is still around! I took my parents here again on a recent visit and it's still the same, except now they use the little booth for storage space, where once a flowing waterfall fountain once stood. I recently took my boyfriend and he enjoyed it too. The ramen soup is tasty and enough for 2 people or for 1 with a large appetite or empty stomach. The miso soup is also good, as well as the tempura. This place will always be special and hopefully it stays around for another 20+ years. Lunch time can get crowded, so visit during off-peak hours. I came to Sapporo-Ya with my sweetheart, who has lived in Japan. He loved it, and so did I. Go with someone unpretentious, order a large bottle of sake and a big bowl of ramen, and eat it Japanese style: with lots of pepper and a little hot sauce, slurping up noodles and broth as fast as you can before it gets cool. My man was here for six days, and he insisted that we visit this restaurant twice! Stop at the little boothes down stairs on your way out and get stickers of yourself with an intensely satisfied look on your face. more

Very reminiscent of Japan - many varieties of ramen, all at reasonable prices (about $8). Gyoza, yakisoba and okonomiaki are also served. The kimchi ramen is especially good. Just don't expect much in terms of service or atmosphere. more
