Best Thai Boat Noodle in LA 1/6/2009

This is my favorite thai noodle shop in the states. First off, I am Thai, and can distinguish authentic Thai cuisine from the fakes. My family and I have spent a lot of time searching hollywood for thai boat noodles, and this is definitely the place to find it. They have the best tasting noodles here and use high quality ingredients. The price is another big plus for only about $5 a bowl. \r \r Saturdays and Sundays also have great specials. Saturday features kao mun gai, and Sundays have khao mok kai. These two dishes are also fairly priced, and are very tasty. I would definitely suggest them if you come in here on the weekends. You have to get in early, or else they sell out. Pros: VERY authentic, great value Cons: sometimes dishes take a while to come out, closed on wednesdays more

Best inexpensive and authentic thai food in town! 7/14/2008

My boyfriend and I are foodies and health-conscious, and we've been searching for a good Thai restaurant for some time, and we found it tonight at this wonderful, little hole-in-the-wall place. We ordered shrimp in curry sauce with green beans, pad thai with tofu, and a papaya salad. The flavors were bold and rich, yet the dishes weren't greasy. The papaya salad wasn't the best, but the main entrees were fabulous. And you can't beat the price. This is hands down the best value, authentic Thai restaurant in town. Pros: Food, price, parking, service Cons: None. more

Killer authentic Thai food!! 2/13/2007

I checked this place out with my boyfriend after we saw it profiled on Anthony Bourdain's show ""No Reservations"" (on the Travel Channel-- awesome show, check it out!).\r \r Anyway during the Los Angeles episode, the fearless Bourdain went to a little Thai Town hole in the wall called Sapp Coffee shop. \r \r Anyway, it was a bit scary on the approach-- the mini-mall exterior, combined with the B in the window didn't bode well. But once we went inside, it was roomy, cheery, full of customers. \r \r We ordered spicy beef Thai Boat noodles, and some crispy pork with brocoli, and some kind of thai beef salad that was covered in crunchy rice powder. \r \r It was all SENSATIONAL. The Thai Boat Noodles were a highlight-- such amazing, complex, intense flavors. I have eaten a lot of Thai Food in my life... especially in the past 10 years I've lived in L.A.... but I soon realized that I had never eaten ""real"" Thai Food. \r \r I can't recommend this place enough. Although you should probably have an ""adventurous"" palate... be open to new things, new flavors. This ain't the...(eyes rolling)...Pink Pepper. \r \r This place, SAPP, is the very definition of Hidden Treasure. \r \r Thanks, Anthony Bourdain! Pros: VERY inexpensive, DELICIOUS food, GREAT thai iced tea Cons: NOT easy to park more

They aren't modest with the Fish Sauce 11/24/2006

Now this is what I call authentic Thai food! I decided to try Sapp out because I am dedicated reader of food blogs. I always want to try places that is ""off the beaten path."" And so I decided to try Sapp out. Boy let me tell you, this is Thai food I have never tried before. I always thought some of the places that I have eaten around LA were authentic, but I believe Sapp is truly authentic. I ordered the Thai Boat noodles which were very hearty and filling. Very good, but it is definitely for the adventurous eater because their broth is made of bits of porkblood. We also tried the papaya salad and whoa, they are not shy on the fish sauce! I guess that's how Thai people really eat it. I consider myself an open person about food, but I think my American tongue just couldn't handle the fishy-ness. It's a little run down hole in the wall place in a dingy strip mall, but worth a try if you are digging the fish sauce. Pros: Real Thai food. Cons: hole in the wall place in a run down strip mall more
