simple and yummie 4/15/2008

good food fast service. cheap eats. if you want white tablecloth service go elsewhere. the place is a machine, so you walk in they sit you down you order and eat and go boom. plus it is super cheap. too many snots crying it is not this or that. the food is good fill you up yummie super quick maybe too quick but whatever i'll be back. think of it as the white castles of chinese food, not grandmas thanksgiving dinner but nothing taste better at the right time... i love this place and would do a commercial for free....lol. ok maybe for a pork bun which is like 2 bucks. i'll take this place over most of the snobby places in the city and burp and laugh with extra money in my pocket and i might have leftovers for tomorrow. go to eat at sammy's not to be pampered and have your ego stroked you will write the next positive review nuff said Pros: good super quick service cheap eats supreme large portions Cons: not a hang out joint, or the place to propose marriage, eat and be out type place more

Avoid Sammy's, new chef , that can't cook Food AWFUL 2/16/2008

I just had the worst experience from this restaurant, the general tso's shrimp I ordered (if I wasn't so hungry) was horrible, not fit for chum. First mistake, had it delivered, when I called to complain they're excuse was that there was a new chef, (probably general response to this complaint) wish I knew that before I threw away $50 bucks plus tip on a delivery that took close to an hour. Never had a bad experience when I ate in, and to top it off delivery came without any duck sauce. Running out of quality chinese restaurants. Strictly from a delivery point of view. Pros: Eat in, Great Cons: Whenever possibe, avoid delivery more

Don't EVER order delivery online! 11/13/2007

I placed an order well over an hour and a half ago. Sure I got their auto reply - Your order is in Process. Then....nothing. Multiple calls with me letting the phone ring off the hook, and no answer. BEWARE more

My Favorite NYC Chinese Restaurant 9/24/2006

Whenever I return to NYC I try to eat as much Chinese food as possible. There are two restaurants that are my favorites, Sammy's Noodle Shop in the West Village, and Joe's Shanghai in FLUSHING.\r \r Now, a lot of people will say that Sammy's isn't authentic or gourmet. I say, I don't care!\r There is no atmosphere. Sevice is brusque. But occasionally you make contact with a waiter who will take a minute to respond. The food comes lightning fast, fresh and hot.\r \r Favorite appetizer; spinach with sesame sauce. Picture a half pound of fresh bright green spinach in a pool of delicous sweet sesame & peanut sauce. The best way to get your veggies that I know of.\r \r Dumplings: You can watch the cooks make the dumplings in the window before you go in. \r Choose any, I love the vegetable dumplings loaded with mushrooms.\r \r Soups: Main dish noodle soups with choices in types of noodles, proteins and the addition of wontons. My husband's favorite is the Roast Duck, mine is the Cha Shu (BarBQue Pork).\r \r Main dishes: We usually don't get past the noodles, but there is nothing like the General Tso's Shrimp! Hot & sweet! Cooked immediately before served, with the shrimp still hot & crisp, even with the sauce on them.\r I am so hungry now & I live @2,500miles away.....\r \r \r Pros: Delicious food. Cons: Sometimes hard to find parking. Remember quarters for meters. more

excellent roast meats, dumplings and noodles 9/15/2006

Fabulous roast duck- order half a duck with fried noodle or noodle soup and a green (bok choi or watercress). Half a duck is sufficient for 2 people with noodles.\r \r Dumplings well above average. Try the baked roast pork buns- sweet and delicious\r \r Pros: above average noodles and Cantonese food more

Don't EVER use their bakery next door! TOTALLY UNRELIABLE AND UNACCEPTABLE!!! 6/25/2006

I placed an order in advance for delivery for a cake from their new bakery next door and it turned out to be a complete nightmare. The girl behind the counter BARELY speaks English and short version of the story the cake did not arrive at 1pm as promised. When I called to find out where the cake was at 1:45, no one had any kind of reason as to why it wasn't there in the first place, offered a fake apology as she brushed me off and no compensation for ruining the surprise party that was planned (it's hard to have a birthday surprise party without a cake!). The sad part is that the cake was great but they are completely unreliable and were just downright rude at one point. My finance stood by and couldn't believe that they didn't even offer up any kind of compensation for all the trouble they caused. Aside from the bakery, I think their noodles are overdone and seriously overrated. more

Reliable 10/22/2004

There is more sophisticated Chinese food to be had in NYC, but Sammy's does a pretty good job for good value. The ""Chilled Cold Noodles"" are delicious, but VERY spicy, so beware. Wonton soups are ok, not great, but lots of the other noodle soups are very good. Roast pork is top notch, so is the chow fun. The place is a factory, but it's great to have in the neighborhood for takeout or quick stop-in gorging. more

Oodles of Noodles! 8/24/2004

I thought that I've been to most of the good Asian eats in the city when a friend of mine invited me for a West Village dinner. To my surprise, Sammy's is Chinatown eats without the crazy traffic and detritus of Canal Street. The best bets to order are the roasted pork, crispy chicken and duck. Water Cress with garlic is a real veggie delight. Plus the noodles and dishes are so huge that you have no choice but eat family style. When I came back with my posse, the wait staff gets upset that we order too much and need another table. But hey, good eats like this needs to go overboard at times! Pros: Reasonably priced, Huge portions, Great meats Cons: , Brusque Waitress more

hurry up and enjoy 8/15/2004

I heard it was quick but the service had no time to talk. They would quicly answer questions and move on and impatiently ask for your order. The food came fast. If you love noodles, this is the place. The soup was loaded with big, homemade noodles, the entries were huge and fresh and flavorful. Took home plently for another meal. Reasonably priced. Not a cozy atmosphere and definitly felt rushed but the food was worth the comprimise. Pros: big portions, reasonably priced, tasty fresh food Cons: , rushed, tight seating more

sammys is worth 6hrs on a NJT train 7/14/2004

I've been going to Sammy's for years, since i was in high school, while going to SVA and every time i go back to the city. I once rode a train for 3 hours one way to go to dinner at Sammy's, walk thorugh MOMA and get right back on the train. I was doing field research at Lakehurst Navy Base in NJ, we got rained out one day and i HAD to have thier cold sesame noodles and BBQ duck.... more

Great Food, Fast Service 2/24/2004

The food here is simply great. One of the best Chinese joints in the city but relatively inexpensive. Service is pretty quick and attentive as well. Can accomodate lone diners and big groups as well! Pros: Big Portions of Food, Prompt Service, Inexpensive more

Beef Stew Noodles 5/5/2003

I'm very picky about my Chinese food especially since I'm Chinese and my mom is a great cook, but this is one place I often go to for their Beef Stew Noodles. I've taken my dad there before and he always asks me if we can go there again when he visits me just for the beef noodles. Big bowl of stewed beef with just a bit of the tendon to keep it good and juicy. Other stuff there is pretty good too including chicken with eggplant. Decent value for decent chinese food for the area - obviously you can get cheaper down in chinatown. Pros: Good Beef Noodles more

please!! 4/29/2003

some of these reviews truly surprise me. you can get better, cheaper and more authentic chinese food a short ride away in chinatown. this place has nothing on any number of noodle shops down there. i went here twice - the first time because nothing else was open and this place looked good.... all of us were disappointed. the second time, i must have forgotten how mediocre the food was. what a mistake. the roast pork was on par with the worst of the take-out places in suburban new jersey, and the broth had no flavor and on top of that the dumplings tasted like the frozen ones in the supermarket. but then i should have paid more attention to the fact that no chinese people were actually eating in this place when i walked in. do yourself a favor and go to chinatown for some real chinese food. more

Best NYC Chinese... Period 2/26/2003

The no frills decor is actually an asset at this amazingly tasty restaurant, because it keeps all of the trendy posers away. Every dish here is excellent, cheap, and gigantic. Highly recommend any dish with the words pork, bun, noodle, or dumpling any where near the title. The fried rice with chinese sausage is another stand out. This is also a fabulous place to seat 15 people on the drop of a hat. Service is functional -- they keep the water glasses full. Pros: Great Pork, Great Noodles, Great Value more

Try the Roast Pork Bun! 6/22/2002

Hands down thee best in cheap eats. Don't expect to ask for a course break, they seat you, you order, the food comes flying out, you eat...once finished the check comes with fortune cookies. BOOM, you're out in a half hour. Anything on the menu I'd recommend and a couple could eat for around $20...you should share and entree the portions are tremendous. The roast pork bun at 1.95 is almost a meal in itself. Fresh baked dough filled with gobs of sweet roast pork. awesome. Noodle soups at $5.95/6.95 are enough to eat for a meal and then take home for leftovers. Delivery within the area shows up within 10-20 minutes. If you're into roast meats you have to try this place. Especially the roast pork which is incredibly sweet and tasty. Same for the ribs. Not a place to take a first date ;) Pros: prompt delivery, rockin' ribs, very inexpensive Cons: eat and run!, can be very noisy more

fast service, good eats cheap 6/10/2002

Seems like the food gets to your table right after you order it! Big plates of steaming hot, good quality Chinese everytime. Food isn't that spicy but the prices are cheap and the restaurant is bustling and fun. more
