Cozy West Village gem 4/18/2010

Salt is kind of hidden on the south side of MacDougal St but it is always busy. I bought a coupon and booked a table for two on a Thursday night. The restaurant is intimate and has a tiny menu but you should not overlook it. They have some absolutely amazing dishes. I got the daily special, King Salmon pan-seared with two sides, egg plant and artichoke puree. My boyfriend on the other hand, tried their braised Lamb shank with beans. Wow, my salmon has a crispy skin and yet the meat is so tender and juicy. The egg plant is cooked to tender and puree was simply amazing. They were all served on the same plate but they surprisingly compliment one another's flavor. My boyfriend's lamb just fell apart from the bone and the flavor is exploding. It tastes like lamb stew. We also got the Lemon Tart with Earl Grey Ice Cream as other Yelpers suggested. It is light, lemony and yet refreshing. I feel satisfied but not overstuffed. Our waitress was super friendly and attentive. The only thing is this place is not cheap. Our bill came to $52 although I have a $25 off coupon. Pros: Organic, Delicious and flavorful Cons: limited menu and pricey more

SOHO gem with terrific food, service and price 4/7/2010

Come here for the food. You won't be disappointed. Mostly organic & always tastey. My all-time favorites here are the appetizers of dates wrapped in bacon drizzled in honey, the green pea risotto, the seasonal soups & cauliflower side. All entrees are wonderful. I can't choose just one as a favorite. I especially LOVE that nearly everything is organic here. Of course, if they could figure out how to get rid of those pesky calories, too, that'd be the only possible improvement to this ever-pleasing kitchen. This place is very small & seating is mainly communal tables except for the 4 two person window tables. Prices are quite reasonable. It can get a little loud but you'll get lost in the food before you can think to complain. more

Nice place to try 11/27/2009

Came here for dinner and it was very crowded (but I like to think that's a good sign - and it was). My date and I started out with this crispy salmon jerky as an appetizer. Both are meals were wonderful. I ordered the organic chicken breast with cauliflower puree and ate every last bite. Dinner would have been close to $100, but we used a Restaurant . com coupon (and I'm very glad we did). I think the portions were alright, just a little smaller for my taste but the food we ate was yummy. Pros: All the food was good Cons: A bit pricey, and loud when crowded more

Would Definitely Return 12/3/2008

Salt was a great choice. The food was excellent as was the ambiance. Service was well above average. However, the main reason I'd go back is the food. Pros: Food Cons: None more

great food and great service 12/2/2008

We've been living- and eating- in NYC long enough to have eaten almost everywhere and look out for the gems. The food at Salt is simply delicious; everything from the amazing bread to the home made pasta to the perfect deserts- every mouthful sings. If there's anything that lacks, it's the space between tables, where you just have to hope you're lucky enough not to sit next to the two 30somethings loudly talking about their boyfriends and nights out. Try to go on early-ish on a weekday night if you actually want to have your own conversation, if not just focus on the amazing food! We'll be back. more

not special 11/21/2008

Meh. Not worth the price or the reputation. Eaten here formally 5 times ( five dinners) and none of them were particularly good. Not bad, but I could make the same foods just as well in my tiny studio kitchen and pay half as much for a bottle of wine as I would for a glass here and be more comfortable and happy and have a better time more

A little below expectation 5/6/2008

I had read some great reviews of salt. I was glad when I happened upon it while wandering the village one night. I was disappointed with the space. The decor was too casual for what they were charging for the food. I was eating on a white picnic bench. The food was good, although everything I had was prepared better somewhere else. My experience at Salt was by no means bad, but I think I was let down by my own expectation. more
