My hair is in bad condition and very difficult to deal with. That is why I go to a professional salon instead of cutting it myself like I normally would. But apparently my stylist, John, was more clueless than I was. He had no knowledge of what I could do to make my hair easier to work with or help restore it. During the cut he was constantly complaining about how bad my hair was. He didn't listen to what I wanted and was very defensive about everything, bordering on attitude. I don't have much of a problem brushing my hair, but he couldn't do it without pulling a ton of it out. And finally, my haircut is an absolute abomination. Not only was it not what I was asking him to do, but it looks like a 3 year old did it. You would never believe I went to a salon. It is lopsided, choppy, uneven, and a mess. I didn't get charged but he didn't even apologize or admit to any faults of his own. Pros: very friendly and welcoming staff Cons: beyond unprofessional service of actual haircut more

Terrific place to style mens' hair and beards 6/20/2008

I was looking for a new barber near Center City to cut my hair and shape a newly-grown beard and gave Salon @ 5th a try. After four appointments, I can highly recommend Salon @ 5th. Faith restyled my hair and shaped the beard. Over the years, I?ve seen many barbers in Philadelphia and even more so in Chicago?some at neighborhood shops; and a few at high-end downtown salons. Never have I received so many compliments about my hair and beard as after my visit to Faith at Salon @ 5th. Top flight stylists; a friendly, comfortable environment and reasonable prices--for me, that adds up to five stars. Favorite Salon 5/1/2008

I've been fortunate enough to have Kyle (the owner) cut my hair for the last 4 years. He's always super personable and does a great job. He's super patient (as demonstrated when he did my hair for my wedding) and one of the more knowledgeable stylists that I have encountered in Philly. more

I've been going to this salon for several years. Kyle has been outstanding with helping me select an appropriate hair style as well as giving me tips on the cool new places to go in the city. All the stylists are very personal and courteous- offering the take your coat, getting you a drink, etc. I always look forward to my appointments! more

For great hair, see Bernadette! 12/24/2007

I've had several blow-dries with Bernadette, and she is fantastic. She expertly straightened & smoothed my unruly curls and I left the salon looking fabulous and feeling beautiful. And her scalp massage is amazing. Salon @ 5th is right across the street from Super Fresh in Society Hill. If you want great hair, book an appointment with Bernadette today! more

Overall great service, atmosphere, and stylist (Faith) 10/2/2007

I recently moved to the area and was looking for a new hair stylist. I decided to try Salon @ 5th after the great reviews and was lucky enough to get Faith for my first appointment. I immediately felt comfortable: the location is great, and the atmosphere is very relaxed, which I love. Within a few minutes I knew that I'd be coming back regularly; Faith was so easy to talk to and so professional, I decided to get my hair highlighted on a whim (in addition to the cut) and I loved both! She did exactly what I wanted, almost as if she read my mind. I'll definitely be headed back again, and would definitely suggest the same to anyone else. more

Salon 9/24/2007

I am a hairstylist and do not have the time to get my hair cut where I work. Faith is faboo. Her strengths are communication, my own phillosophy is that there is primarily poor communication, resulting in stylists not meeting the clients needs. Faith will make sure she knows what you want. She is also an expert in getting people comfortable with her especially those ""non-traditional"" salon clients- those normally not comfortable in a salon setting. I moved to philly from NYC, I had a hard time finding a stylist that did exactly what I wanted. I went to Salon @ 5th and was introduced to Lauren who delivered my expectation and even was aware of all hip new styles and color techniques. The Best color, cut and styling all in one....FAITH!!! 2/17/2007

I am a rare breed of finicky yet vague when it comes to how I try describing what I want my hair to look like after a visit for cut and color. I can see how I want it in my head but have a really hard time verbalizing it. If you're anything like me, you've got to go to FAITH at Salon @ 5th. Faith listens well, articulates what I'm trying to get across, and even provides really great visual metaphors in helping me understand what she's thinking in translating my request. She's great! If you also want high class service without the pretentious vibe, you can't beat this salon. I love it there, but truth be told, I'd follow Faith into a backwoods barn if she'd still do my hair. Keep the FAITH my friends...there really is a friendly salon with a genius stylist that is worth every penny and more, right here in Center City. Pros: Faith more

My wife and I have just moved into Center City from the suburbs and I found Salon@5th in Society Hill. It has a friendly atmosphere and someone even offered to hang my coat and then offered me a refreshment. Nice touch. Pros: Great atmosphere, friendly and courteous staff. Very professional. more

Hands down, Faith IS my most important fashion accessory. I've followed her through three salons now, and she's worth her weight in platinum. The drive, the traffic, the schedule conflicts .... none of it measures up to the confidence I hold in Faith and her skill as a stylist. She listens, evaluates your expectations, and consistently delivers great skill and service. Unlike many artists, Faith is continously challenging herself to learn and apply new techniques that help her clients maximize their style, and personal impact. This was my first visit to Salon @ 5th and I came in with a bad haircut that needed to be fixed. Faith asked me a number of questions about what I was looking for, threw out some options and worked a miracle, turning a disaster into one of the best haircuts I've ever received. I love everything about this salon. It's in a great location, the people who work there are fun, and the design is cool and modern. Best of all, Salon@5th has Faith, who is the best stylist I've ever had, including a fancypants guy in LA who used to charge twice as much. I've gone to Faith for years, and many is the time I've come in wanting a change but not exactly sure what I wanted. Some stylists get a little mad when you do that, but she actually likes it and sees it as a challenge. You can tell she loves experimenting because every time you see her she's done something new and unusual to her own hair (and it always looks good). The best part of getting my hair done by Faith is that it continues to look great as it grows out. That's the sign of someone who really knows what she's doing. Pros: cool atmosphere, Faith. more

Faith is great @ Salon @ 5th 1/4/2007

In the past I would go to the salon and get my hair done and I would like it for a day. Then as soon as I went home and washed it and tried to do it myself, I would realize I could never duplicate what the stylist had done. I also never used the same stylist more that twice, since I never felt they were listening or interested in me being really happy with my hair. Then I started going to Faith (3 times and counting) and met a stylist who really listens to what you want, is creative and really cares that you are happy when you get up from her chair. One of the best things about going to Faith is that when I get home, I can do my hair myself and it still looks cool, and funky, and fun, just like when Faith did it!! I once read in a magazine that the sign of a really great haircut is that you get compliments on your hair even up to the day before you're getting it cut again. This has started happening for me for the first time since I started seeing Faith. Pros: Faith, good listening, convenient hours Cons: Haven't found any more

My FAITH was restored 1/4/2007

Salon @ 5th is a cute spot between South Street and Independence Mall. I went there for an appointment with Faith (who came highly recommended) and she was awesome. She was very down to earth and relaxing to be with. This place is totally great, and I felt so much more confident and restored after a session with Faith. Salon @ 5th is a little gem of a salon. The staff is down to earth, and you can tell they really care about what they do. I've had John and Lauren both do my hair, and they do a great job. If you're sick of going to pretentious salons that run late and treat you poorly, you should try Salon @ 5th. Pros: Easy to park, Bernadette gives a great shampoo Cons: no cons more

I just had the best salon experience in a very long time. Faith was the name of my stylist and she was fantastic. I briefly explained what I was looking to do and she was able to create exactly what I had hoped, but better, because it was on my head and not in my imagination! She is very capable and super nice to talk to, and extremely professional. Faith obviously loves what she does and it shows in her final product as well as her attitude toward her clients. Best haircut in my life 1/3/2007

A friend once said to me, ""Don't you wish you could ask your stylist to cut your hair cooler than they think you are?"" Well, that's exactly what I got at Salon @ 5th! And Faith is the best hair stylist ever! I highly recommend this salon. more
