A one of a kind in the East Village 1/7/2011

A classically appointed bistro lounge that harkens back to the 1940's. Black and white print photography adorns the walls. You find yourself conversing about a time or place or something that reminds you of one of the personas on the wall. The food is great (bacon pizza, wow) the staff great, vibe is great. I discovered this place years ago and now I can't get enough... it's my "escape from NY" place where the lights are low, the live jazz is soft, and I can just mellow out. I love hearing the groups of people laugh as I know people are having a good time - everyone wants to be around that kind of positive feeling. Rue B is the kind of place where my grandparents would have met 70 years ago on a date. This is perhaps why this place is so special to me. more

Good food and drinks, bad crowd. 6/27/2009

I have been going to Rue B for a long time. The food and drinks are good. the decor is unique and comfortable. There is always good music, however, the audience seems to be indifferent towards it. My biggets complaint about Rue B is the people. It used to attract a diverse and mature crowd. Now, it has been taken over by young kids who are loud, disrepectful and obnoxious. They congregate around the narrowest space of the bar between the bathroom and musicians. They yell and scream over the music. They seem completely oblivious to the waiters trying to squeeze past them with drinks. They bump into the musicians in the middle of the performance and don't even apologize. They tip the waiters and bartenders poorly. They completely ignore the tip basket for the musicians when it goes around. I wish the older crowd would come back and show these morons some class. more

Great piano bar restaurant 4/4/2009

This is one of my new favorite spots! Had my birthday party here and it was the perfect location. Food and drinks were amazing! They were so accommodating to my late friends and scattered ordering. and loved the live jazz after 9PM. Pros: Food, drinks, service, music Cons: Location more

Rue B Tuesday 4/3/2008

Despite the name, and its jaunty Parisian sign, there's nothing particularly French about Rue B. The collection of black-and-white photographs which clutter the walls celebrate mid-20th century American cultural or sporting greatness. Sinatra is well-represented in the bathroom. When lights are low a tight jazz combo swings in the corner, under the watchful gaze of an aging Chet Baker. The drinks are good, and so is brunch. How could I resist something called Eggs Corleone. more

Not the same 2/18/2008

Where the hell is the old bartender?? Im used to the bartender at brunch who made great bloody mary's. I found out he's no longer there which is a shame. I'd love to know where he works at now. He was pretty cool. Pros: the food is good Cons: the vibe isn't the same more

Great for late evenings... 2/1/2008

I went here with a friend this week on Wednesday, and we had a great, great experience. Super-friendly bar staff and great drinks with an easy, non-pretentious vibe. It was intended to be a bar hop down Avenue B, but we ended up staying all night. more

Expensive, bad attitude and crappy drinks 1/21/2008

I went there for the first time and asked for a caipirinha, which the bartender didn't know how to make but still charged me $12 for it. My group of 5 sat at a table and got yelled at by the waitress because we could only sit there if we were going to order more drinks. We had the intention of doing that but I just had to leave or I'd throw my drink at her face. There was NO need to YELL at CUSTOMERS who wanted to BUY stuff from the place. Never going back and do not recommend anyone go there. more

Brunch price increase, not so cool 11/3/2007

We used to go here every weekend for the $10 brunch despite the fact that one of the waitresses was such a b*tch that we used to actually laugh about it every week. Then two things happened: the cooks changed and they raised the price. While the asparagus and eggs used to be made with high-quality olive oil and shaved parmisian, it's now diner-quality greasy with some Kraft-esque dust on top. These days the "Tuscan Truffled Eggs" should be changed to "Corn Oil Eggs in the Hole." While this was annoying, the audacity of the $2 increase that now results in a poorer-quality brunch for more money is disappointing. While a $12 brunch that includes a drink ain't shabby, it's not worth putting up with that borderline-psycho waitress. Needless to say, I've taken my brunch business elsewhere Pros: Brunch includes cocktail Cons: hit-or-miss staff, quality of food dramatically reduced more

They Lost Two Customers Today 8/1/2007

We used to like this place for brunch but after today, we'll never go back. We were attracted by the lunch special, $10 for salad, 1/2 sandwich and a "soft drink or coffee/tea." That's a good deal. But wait...We ordered iced teas with our meal. When the check arrived, we were charged for both of them. When we showed the special as described on the menu to the waiter/bartender he told us that iced tea fit neither the description of a soft drink or coffee/tea. Couldn't he have said something when we were ordering? What a rip off. No wonder the place was empty. more

Go for the beer! Excellent party space. 3/9/2007

This place is a beer lover's paradise. Solid selection. They keep their draft beer lines impeccably clean. I had the first pour from their Stella, Sierra Pale, Guinness, and Blue Moon taps on Saturday afternoon. I was blown away at how I actually got to taste fresh beer (The bartender told me they had a company come in and clean the hell out of their beer lines often.) Beer lovers: you will not be disappointed with this place. more

Well... 11/20/2006

The food wasn't great, but there are two-for-one martini cocktails during happy hour. I'm pretty sold. Pros: happy hour, live music Cons: food more

great bartenders! 10/15/2006

My group of friends and I stumbled (really, stumbled) into this place on Saturday night "for one drink" on our way to another bar. I had a sombrero on my head (31st bday...yes, "31 not 21" but whatever) which probably indicated that this may be a fun crowd. Needless to say we livened up the place, which was small but still very fun. The bartenders were SOOO much fun, entertaining us, and putting up with alot of drunkeness, I'm sure!!! But when we tried to leave to go to the next place, they asked us to stay and so we did. Finally, we really stumbled out around 3am. I left without my sombrero but I figured it was a good tip (besides, it had all of the drink garnishes inside the rim...thought they could use them back!) Pros: friendly bartenders Cons: small venue more

Still fun but not as fun as it used to be 7/21/2006

Stellar food -- "old school" sopressata sandwich (not on the menu anymore but the sandwich jedi in the back can whip one up pronto), fabulous ciabatta creations, amazing polenta, yummy guac, and one of the best brunches in the village! Staff has changed, less friendly and less attentive. Manager can be very blunt but he's a good guy. Music has changed; used to be great, amazing, well-balanced jazz that still let you have a quiet conversation. Now it's louder blues with the guitar amp turned up so loud you can't hear the piano or your friends. Drinks very tasty and priced New York style; stay away from their "specials" and your dry martini with lots of olives will be nice to your tongue and wallet. Fun people watching, especially on the weekends. Pros: Great food, fun atmosphere, great social scene Cons: Can be loud; spotty service more

Good jazz...but extremely rude staff. 4/16/2006

Our waitress knew that our group of five was only ordering drinks, and she offered a table to us anyway. We proceeded to order a stream of expensive cocktails and bottled water, but clearly we were not spending enough $. It began to fill up, and we had just finished our cocktails and were about to leave (we had even collected the check) when the manager came over and said (in an extremely rude tone) "I don't mean to be rude, but there are people waiting and it is time for you to go." We were floored. We had done nothing to deserve this hostility, other than fail to order dinner, which they were aware of when we arrived! To make matters worse, the waitress followed us out, and demanded that we leave a better tip. We shouldn't have left a tip at all, and we WON'T be going back. Pros: good jazz Cons: rude manager, rude waitress more

Definite Favorite 3/1/2006

Your best bet is to visit Rue B on a weekend during happy hour. Drinks are half-price (at the bar ONLY). Shane should be working the bar and you can pretty much be guaranteed your drink will be nice. If it's not simply say something and he'll make it right. Rob follows up for the late night crowd and he's equally accomodating. The food is fantastic. It's better than typical "bar" fare with options ranging from antipasta to polenta and desserts to match. It does get crowded, though, and, like every other piece of real estate in NYC, space is limited. It's definitely one of my favs and promises to remain as such. Pros: fair prices for great drinks and food, good music, live music (on occasion), great photos, nice people. Cons: small space, the occasional pretentious bloke. Verdict: rock on! more

Great Find 1/6/2005

I randomly walked on in the other night and the place was packed with nice people. They had live music and one of the best piano players I have ever seen. He completely took over the bar. The service was great as well. I'll defintely be back! Pros: Music, Friendly Staff more

Jazz and Juice 10/15/2004

A wonderful little place for Jazz and Juice-laced Martinis. Great service and tasty food. The Saturday and Sunday Brunch, along, with their 7 day a week Happy Hours, makes for a fun-filled time. From 9:00pm to 12:00pm nightly, the boast some the City's finest Jazz. Give it a try, I give it a 9 on a scale of 10. more

Overpriced E. Village 4/11/2003

Way too loud when packed... One perfectly nice waitress versus one psycho waitress, somewhat clueless bartender and a hyper-sensitive owner make it kind of unpredictable. The unassuming Jazz trio makes it more mellow on less crowded nights. The sweet drinks will get you over the top before you know it... Pros: Great Drinks, Live Music Cons: Loud, Expensive more

Great Service 1/31/2003

Low key, great food, well-mixed drinks, EXTREMELY nice and accomodating staff, great jazz (but you can still hear who you are talking to!), there is nothing bad I can say about this place. Highly recommended. Pros: Great Jazz, Intimate, Great staff Cons: Crowded on weekends more
