ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE 5/13/2010

We picked this restaurant after researching the reviews on-line and we are very happy we did. The place is elegant and clean. The service is excellent. I had the Chicken with black bean sauce and my husband had the General Tao’s Chicken with Egg Roll and Won Ton soup. They are all delicious. They use the finest and fresh ingredients such as all white meat chicken. They came out nice and hot and flavorful. The price is very reasonable. I am a Chinese from Houston. This restaurant definitely meet my high standard. It is pretty packed on a Thursday night which says a lot. I highly recommend it. Pros: FOOD, SERVICE, AMBIENCE more

So delicious! 5/6/2010

I've been going to Royal for the past 5 years and have never been disappointed. Recently, now that I have my own vehicle, I try and come to Royal Inn at least once weekly in order to get their lunch specials. :] I usually order the lemon chicken, and it's always fresh and the chicken-crust is crunchy and it's GREAT!! They also have the best eggrolls ever created. Their fried rice is amazing too. I love the service, and also talking with Rex (the man who works there), he is so funny and friendly. I look forward to going again!!! Pros: Served fresh, and tastes amazing; Friendly service Cons: What's there to hate?? more

My Favorite 11/18/2009

One of my favorite cuisines and very reasonable. Never had a bad meal and always pleasant service. I like it when the owner takes the time to talk with his customers, which Rex does often. Pros: Great food and service more

Great Food, Management and Staff 8/27/2009

This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Texas. This is one of our places to stop on Sunday after church. I've always received good service and food and if I ever have an issue they are quick to remedy. Every guest I have taken has been very satisfied. In fact, after writing this I think I will pay them a visit tonight!\r Pros: Warm friendly service, clean, quality and price Cons: Too far from my house more

authentic 5/7/2009

I am a native of Taiwan. I have been living in San Antonio for 13 years. Authentic chinese food is hard to find in SA. Royal Inn surprised me with their food, but you must order off the menu (in Chinese! Just kidding, the owner is fluent in English). He likes to be called ""Ah-Shu"" or ""uncle"" in chinese. He will fix you up a feast if you give him a couple of day to buy the supplies. Make a reservation and tell them you want to speak with ""ah-shu"" (uncle) and that you don't want the Americanized Chinese food. You want the authentic chinese food. The steamed fish was awesome. The special beef was great. The squid was out of this world. The curry chicken was delicious. The pea shoots/greens stirfry was earthy and tasty. ..you won't be disappointed. If you are a Sweet and Sour, fried rice - kinda eater..., then don't bother.....go to your nearest Panda Express, you will be happier. (BTW, bring at least 6-7 friends because it is a 8-10 course feast usually). Bon Appetite to the Foodies..... Pros: authentic chinese Cons: americanized chinese food customers more

One of the Best in San Antonio for Chinese Food. 12/10/2008

Considering that my wife is Asian, and critical of quality. We can honestly say that we have never been disappointed with the Royal Inn. It is one of the best 'sit-down-no-buffet' Asian restruants that we have found. We have found the staff to be very friendly, and very courtous. We especially like their 'combination low-mein', and their Singapore fried noodles are great! All of their soups are great, especially the 'hot & Sour soup'. We consider it to be our first choice for Asian (Chinese) food. Also, if you wish to see how popular a Chinese resturant is...look around. You will find many Asians eating at Royal Inn...which should tell you something about the food. Pros: Food Quality, Service Cons: gets busy at times more

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! 11/25/2008

DO NOT ORDER DELIVERY! I am INFURIATED with the way they handled my situation! I ordered and waited for an hour to receive my food and when I called to inquire about it I got the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE! An Employee by the name of MAY even hung up on me! I told them that I would not pay $25 when I was quoted a 15-20 min wait and they told me that they would not deal with me to call their manager the next day. They told me that they were backed up on deliveries and when the poor driver finally did show up(he was oblivious to everything going on)i was told that there were hardly any deliveries! So not only are they RUDE they LIE! How's that for customer service?\r more

Consistently good 9/1/2008

Food is consistently good, prices are reasonable, and the service is prompt. The decor is basic, but clean, and the dining room has sufficient capacity to usually eliminate waiting for a table. Chicken is chicken is chicken, right? Not so at Royal Inn. Lemon Chicken features a flattened breast, pan sauteed and presented cut into diagonal slices. General and Sesame feature pounded, flash fried chicken breast strips that arrive in large, tender curls. Sweet/Sour is the standard inch-square chunks of white meat, covered with a thick batter and fried. We stay away from the non-fried chicken entrees such as moo goo gai pan and chicken with garlic sauce because the texture of the chicken can border on velvety but more often than not hints of being undercooked. We've left too many uneaten entrees to give them another try. The shrimp and beef dishes really shine. Shrimp with green beans, with 8 or 9 plump, tender shrimp and a mound of fresh, crisp/tender green beans and a mildly spicy brown sauce, is what we order most often. Try Kung Pao Shrimp, with lots of crunch from peanuts and celery, or Mongolian Beef, with its caramelized scallions. Most lunch entrees are priced between $6 and $7 and include choice of soup (forego the basic egg drop or hot and sour in favor of the unusual chicken corn), appetizer (crispy but basic egg roll or skimpily filled rangoons), and rice (fried or steamed). Beverages are NOT included. The big drawback to this consistently good experience is the checkout. The line backs up regularly, but not necessarily due to volume of business. The problems are slow credit card processing speed and cashier, who is also in charge of taking phone orders, sometimes interrupting the flow of checkout for several minutes at a time. This could be easily resolved, but in the 8 years we've been otherwise enjoying lunch at Royal Inn, management hasn't figured out any improvement for the busy hour between noon and 1 pm. In any case, we'll keep returning! Pros: Consistently good food, attentive service, value Cons: Chicken dishes (other than fried), very slow checkout more

WAIT STAFF is EXCELLENT, FOOD is better than average, BUT the front desk register girl is RUDE 8/30/2008

This is definitely a great place to go have a hot lunch, especially in a time crunch. The wait staff are great, except for a few female asian waitresses who can be blunt and rude. The food is better than your average chinese food, so no issues. But over the phone and in person, that front desk register lady is lazy, unsmiling, smart-alecky with no customer service skills whatsoever. She dampens the good experiences people have in this restaurant and is the main reason for all these perceived inadequacies. In fact, I just called to order some pan-fried noodles today, where they were charging $10 for an alacarte order. So I jestingly asked ""so why is it so expensive"" to which the lady answered ""it is difficult to make pan-fried noodles, you know."" I wanted to suppress my laughter as I also cook asian food and it does not take too much energy to make pan fried noodles. So there, call it as you may. Good luck! Cons: Front Desk Register person more

Always over charge you!!! 8/15/2008

I always order from them cause a lot of restaurants don't deliver It says on there menu that the lunch specials are $5.00 and I always buy two I always get charged $11.89 when its suppose to be $10.89 for two $5.00 meals I thought they were charging $1 extra for delivery so I never said nothing but when i went in person they did it again and i told them that, that's what they charged me for delivery so why now when there $5.00 each and they told me rudely that they don't charge for delivery and that i didn't know how to add my taxes OMG can you believe that anyways I never order from there again and they were my twice a week delivery restaurant for almost 2 years. RUDE RUDE RUDE RUDE!!!!! Anyways i was getting annoyed everytime i called and asked for delivery they would say ""Cash only is Ok"" Screw your cash only!!!!!!! Pros: They are the only delivery restaurant that comes to my home Cons: bad service over charge you nasty cold food upon delivery and they are always right not the customers more

WORST FOOD & customer service EVER 7/6/2008

Honestly I thought the ""food"" was tolerable all except the fried rice which was GROSS! All I can say is it was slightly warm, sticky and almost looked like a ice cream scoop of cold oatmeal! I figured since it is sooo close to my apartment I would try it again and that was my LAST visit. I placed an order for carry-out and when I got home realized they'd forgotten ALL of my appetizers ie. eggrolls and cheese puffs so I figured I'd call and get them to add it to my next visit or at least get an appology (I'm that type of person that understands with fastfood come occastional mishapps and I NEVER call when my order is messed up)...boy was I wrong about this place. When I called I was immediately told I was wrong and they were sure they put everything in the bag then before I could finish that person hands the phone off to another person (mind you...no...here let me have u speak with.....just a cold hand off) then I had to re-explain the whole story once again mid-sentence this time... I handed off to the delivery guy who doesn't even pack the orders and he proceeds to tell me that both people I just spoke to SWEAR they put everything in the bag and there's nothing they can do (by this point I was EXTREMELY irrated) Figuring by this point what happened to THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT!????? I said forget it and hung-up the phone. Sadly, they were wrong and they lost a customer and I vowed from that day on I tell EVERYONE that mentions chinese food NEVER NEVER go to Royal Inn!!! Pros: It was close to my house!, authenitic decorations in dining area Cons: Bad Service, Food, Parking more

Delicious Chinese dishes 6/16/2008

I moved away from San Antonio, and have cravings for this place. Try the Special Beef, Domino Tofu and the Hot & Sour Soup -- they are all *exceptional* dishes. Service was always great for me. Pros: special beef, domino tofu, hot & sour soup more

Flies all Flies 6/3/2008

If you like bad service and insects in your food by all means please go to Royal Inn. The customer service is horrible they made me feel like an idiot. NEVER AGAIN!!!! I found a fly in my soup and the manager assumed that I placed it in there...WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT! Not there they seem not want to accept there error, but it did happned. The manager stated that I had to go back and take the food to them for a full refund I agreed and as soon as I got there the manager was waiting for me by the door so that I would not make a scence but I voice my concern because it was the truth. He gave me my money and sent me on my way...That is fine so that is the reason why I am posting this review so the rest of the people can konw about my horrible experience. ROYAL INN IS BAD IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE!!!! more

Excellent customer service, hot tasty food! 3/11/2008

The service was 100% excellent, fast, and friendly. I love chinese food, and this food was served hot and fresh. The egg drop soup and egg rolls were great, plus the prices were nice. I will definitely return to this resturant, to eat in or take out. more

Great food, prompt service and a great price! 2/10/2008

My family and I have been going to Royal Inn for years and have never had any problems or concerns. We love their food- their hot and sour soup is outstanding and I love how they use white meat instead of dark for General Tso's. We live too far for delivery, but when we call ahead to pick up our order, it is always ready when we get there. Even during lunch hour, they still give very prompt sersvice. We like them so much, we even had our wedding shower there! I definitely recommend. Pros: Great service, delicious food, great price, great party rooms Cons: The only thing I can think of is the bathrooms need some work. more

Always freshly prepared and very consistent 12/3/2007

I've been to Chinese restaurants around the country and overseas and this is one of the best! Their menu is good, but the stand-out feature is that every dish is freshly prepared and not overwhelmed by overly sweet sauces. Service is prompt. I've been there on many occasions and can only think of one where we had what seemed like a long wait for the food to arrive. But the food has always been great! This has become our favorite ""neighborhood"" Chinese spot, hands down! Pros: Food, service, parking Cons: A pleasant atmosphere, but definitely on the functional side. more

Good Food. Served Hot and Fresh. Great Place to go at Lunch. 10/4/2007

Dulxenia must be a plant from a rival chinese food restaurant. First of all, China Inn's service is fast and friendly. They serve a LOT of people during the lunch hour. It is a great place to go if you want to be sure to eat good, hot food on your lunch hour. Now does anyone really believe that someone called in an order, got to the counter and was ""shusshed"", and then waited 45 minutes for their food. BS! Everything that I have ever eaten there has been very fresh, fast and delicious. And they have one of the largest lunch menu selections that I have ever seen. more

DO NOT ORDER FOOD TO GO! 9/12/2007

This place has RUDE employees. I placed an order ahead of time for pick-up during lunch. I walked inside to the front desk and the girl working ignored me and stayed looking down. I told her I had an order for pick-up and before I could finish my sentence, she ""shooshed"" me. I sat down and waited for my food assuming it wasn't ready. Customers sat down to eat and left and I was still waiting. The delivery man left 2 times and I was still waiting. I waited 45 minutes on top of my ""call ahead"" time for my lunch! After I was extremely frustrated at this point I hoped at least my food was good. WORST FRIED RICE EVER!!! Sticky, cold, gooey ice cream scoop is the best way to describe it! Pros: Chinese people work here Cons: Food is horrible more

very fresh food, good service, tablecloths 7/30/2006

We do not frequent Chinese restaurants due to inconsistent results--but I have consistently had excellent fresh food at lunch here. more
