Food was good. But the service was really quite annoying. The server was aloof, and his knowledge of the menu items was limited. He was also down right rude to the table next to ...

I have NEVER experienced such discourtesy from a restaurant in my life..the whole entire staff is RUDE and unintelligent..the bar tender Tommy was extremely sexist and basically told me and my 2 women friends that we needed to leave. The original waiter when I asked where the drink menu was said to me ""right front of your face"". The manager Michelle looked like she was high on some type of drug and couldn't stop swaying from side to side during our conversation about how horrible our experience was. DON'T GO HERE it is a waste of time and $$!!! I am still so upset! more

Good Meal 7/17/2009

I have been really wanting to try this place for some time. I was somewhat skeptical of going after reading some of the reviews. But I had a great burger...we are talking top five in my time. The frites were awesome (though Monk's are slightly better). The lobster spring rolls for the app was phenomenal. The service was alittle slow, the place was very loud and I don't know if the air conditioner is broke but inside it was very chaud. But this place is going for the food. Pros: Fries Burger Location Cons: Loud, small, hot (temperature speaking) more

Romantic dinner 2/16/2009

I love Rouge. Of course, my opinion could be biased because this was my first date with my boyfriend (one which he recreated for Valentine's Day). I have had exceptional food and wonderful service here. Yes it's loud (but really it makes it more intimate to get closer to your date or friends) but I think they have improved that over time. The food has always been good (ok the creme brulee was a little watery but the top was perfection and it was a busy Valentine's day weekend. Rouge always evokes this old Hollywood glamor type feel for me. I expect Humphrey Boghart to sit down next to me. Always a great time! This places will always hold some of my favorite memories. Pros: our food has always been wonderful, romantic ambience Cons: can be loud but has improved since my first visit there more

People Watching at it Best with Good Food 7/5/2008

Oh boy this is another fun place to people watch and mingle. Staff is super nice. Burgers are good too. Chef is pretty cool. Owner is on site too. Pros: great service good food Cons: long lines sometimes more

Great Location, Good Food, Horrible Service! 5/27/2008

Been there twice. First experience was ok. We got an outside seat, which was nice, and ordered tuna tartar, a salad and two mimosas. It took forever for our food to arrive and the server barely checked up on us. I suppose the second time doesn't really count since the hostess said she would call us when our table was ready and NEVER DID! We ended up going to Brasserie Perrier and had a far more enjoyable meal. Pros: Great location and great for outdoor dining Cons: Crowded, chaotic, and horrible service more

Inconsistent 5/15/2008

In all fairness, I've eaten Rouge a few times. The first time it was fine. The second time, we were placed at a less desirable table near the alley way. We got there early for lunch. We asked if we could sit outside. There were seven open tables in the front. But they told us we couldn't have one of those tables and they took us to the one on the very end. Two minutes later, all of the open tables were seated! Well, we were forgotten about many times when it came to food running, glass refilling. We noticed every table who was seated after us had received their food before us. When we asked the server about our food, she screamed at busser in front of us. I had a bowl of soup to start and they indicated to me that since I had a 'first course' the rest of our order was held up in the kitchen. We noticed plates upon plates being served all around us and no one thought to check on us or even go to the kitchen to see what was taking so long. We ordered two salads for pete's sake! Don't get me wrong, I was a waitress for many years. I am no stranger when it comes to working in a restaurant. After close to 50 minutes (no exaggeration) of sitting there with no entrees ever being served to us, we left. We each went back to work having had no lunch and annoyed at another overrated attempt to eat at Rouge. I called later that day and calmly told the hostess, ""We had some disappointing service at lunch today."" She totally remembered who we were and sent out a free gift certificate to us. That was nice of her. We returned to use the gift certificate but I wasn't in the mood to be cheery. We arrived at 2:30p.m. - after the lunch rush so we could get some decent service and food. We ended up with the same server as the last time. Lunch was ok - at best. We handed the server the gift certificate stating our free meal because of, ""disappointing service at lunch"". She took a glance at it, sighed, and said 'thank you, ladies'. We haven't been back since. Pros: pretentious 'seen and be seen' restaurant Cons: disorganized and OVER RATED more

Great Location - Good Lunch 4/17/2008

Though we had to wait awhile for a table (there were a good number of people waiting as well), it was a Saturday afternoon so it was expected. Located directly across from the park, it should have been a great view but unfortunately our first table was so close to the street, we just kept watching cars buzz by us. We were able to move to a table on the opposite side of the sidewalk which was much better. Sandwiches and the wine choices were very good - though the wine was SUPER expensive. Service was pleasant, but our waitress seemed somewhat disinterested in us - and we are definitely LOW MAINTENANCE diners. Seating is tight, but we actually had an enjoyable conversation with a large table of Canadian tourists seated near us. Definitely not a place to go if you're trying to have a romantic meal or a private conversation. Pros: Good Food, Good Location Cons: Crowded, Expensive more

Golly Staff and delightfuly tasting food 3/18/2008

The wait staff was helpful and cheery from the time we opened the door. They don't take reservations, but we only had to wait a half hour for a table of four. They took my cell phone number to allow us to promenade around the park until our table was ready. The burgers looked great, but I was in the feeling for tuna. The dish was perfectly done, only complaint being portions could have been a little bit larger. But, if you get the burger, prepare to be stuffed, as my friends were. Pros: Location, and chic ambience Cons: Portions, unless you get the burger. more

great food, chic atmosphere 12/26/2007

I like Rouge, but this place honestly isn?t for everyone. It has all the things you?d think of with a Rittenhouse scene, both good and bad. It seems like the crowd there could get a little pretentious, but I didn?t find that to be the case with the patrons or the staff when I had dinner there with my mom recently. In fact, two women seated next to us struck up a great conversation with us when they overheard us discussing politics. And our waitress was exceptionally friendly. The prices are a little high on some items, like the $16 burger, but my mom said it was the best burger she?s ever had. I had salmon in an oxtail sauce that was perfectly cooked. Amazing, actually. The bottom line is, whether you?re the type to frequent this spot or make it a special occasion visit, the food is great and it?s a chic little place. Pros: great food, located on the square, it's part of the rittenhouse scene (if that's your thing) Cons: it's part of the rittenhouse scene (if that's not your thing) more

top notch 11/4/2007

soothing ambiance and great music make for a great atmosphere. the chef has designed a beautiful french/ american menu and the kitchen turns out consistently delicious food. the service is excellent - knowledgeable and attentive without being over bearing. i've never been disapointed and always bring friends from out of town here to give them a taste of a top notch philly experience. Pros: excellent food and attention to detail Cons: none! more

Good Food/Great Bistro Atmosphere 10/13/2007

The food was very competent, and the wait staff was great. We were promptly seated. and our waitress, Jocelyn, was friendly, helpful and delightful in every way. While the much-hyped burger was good, there were other menu selections that I would recommend. The wine list was good and not over priced for this type of eatery. Will definitely go again. For those that have written less than glowing reviews, go get a Big Mac. Apparently that is the barometer with which you gauge your dining experience. Very good tuna tartare!! Pros: Good Food and Lively, Fun Atmosphere more

Good Atmosphere 7/22/2007

On a Friday night the bartenders seemed like they weren't able to handle the crowd. We had to wait a long time for drinks and we were sitting right at the bar. We would have stayed longer, but didn't want to wait another 20 minutes for drinks. The crowd is good looking and the atmosphere is great. I've also been on Sunday afternoons and had a much better experience with faster service. Pros: Great atmosphere, cozy, good food, good drinks Cons: Service is very slow, bartenders look overwhelmed, expensive more

Terrible Experience 5/8/2007

This place is awful - terrible service, overpriced, low quality food, pretensious atmosphere. Wouldn't go back, wouldn't recommend. more

The Holy Grail of Eggs Benedict 11/18/2006

Look no further for the best eggs benedict in all of Philadelphia; it's right here at Rouge's brunch. The french toast is also fabulous, and on a warm spring or summer day, the outdoor seating is the best in the city, with beautiful views of Rittenhouse Square and everyone's precious little pooches joining them for a relaxing meal outside. Pros: Great view of the park Cons: Small interior, on the pricey side more

Great for afternoon lunches 10/24/2006

Lunch is good. The tables are small but sitting outside on warm days people watching is always fun. Walnut Street shopping is an added plus. Pros: great for an afternoon out shopping Cons: small tables more

Small cafe, big on charm 8/20/2006

Rouge sits on one of the sides of Rittenhouse Square, meaning you can be sure to people-watch from one of the outdoor tables whether it's the proximate foot traffic or across in the R-Sqr park. Its small interior is bent on becoming a velvety lounge apres dinner. I had fine & attentive service by one of the ""little-black-dress"" clad waitresses, she was very kind & helpful. The bib lettuce salad with roquefort cheese & spiced cashews was excellent as well as the pan-seared proscuitto wrapped halibut with lentils. The halibut was cooked to perfection, with excellent consistency. The warm chocolate flourless cake was all right, but it's $4 addt'l to transform it to a la mode! It was amusing to watch the bartender tend to partrons in the central circular bar. It can be casual, but the Happy Hour seems to attract some suits. Pros: Location, food, happy hour Cons: Parking?, small interior more

superb food and great ambiance 6/14/2006

a wonderous dining experience. The food is a miracle and the place oozes class. I love the filet and my wife the great salmon dishes. more

simply superb 6/9/2006

This is the ultimate dining experience in Philadelphia. I just love everything about this wonderful place. Pros: great food, great service more

Always wonderful 6/5/2006

Just the perfect ending to a great day before my wedding. I had always enjoyed this restaurant and this time they made my party something quite special. Pros: great food, service, ambiance more

Oddly enough, this spot is mostly beige. The bistro's wide and shallow interior surrounds a low marble bar that divides small, round tables. Apropos of the layout, the...
