Best

This place is beautiful; the food quality was very good. Even though the food was expensive, it was well worth. The service was good.

Worst

Not crazy about this place. While the menu promises wonderful things, their dishes are VERY salty, bordering on unhealthy. All though the bar, provides tasty and strong drinks. As...

Best Creative Mexican in NYC 4/21/2012

I've been coming here for years. Always reliable and creative mexican fare. It's not the greasy tex-mex that most other ""Mexican"" places peddle - this place is authentic with fresh ingredients. Be adventurous - don't just choose the enchiladas (although they are great also!). I always have the fish dishes. The striped bass is great and the current cod special is fantastic - note to management: please put it on the regular menu!! Note that you need to expect a high energy/noise level on busy nights but I think that give it a great NY atmosphere. Mid-week is a quieter if you want a more intimate date. more

Neighborhood Gem in Chelsea 5/7/2011

Local gem to Chelsea. Rocking Horse Cafe has everything one could want, from the food to the atmosphere. Wait staff is truly amazing. Ask for Diego, he will take good care of you. RHC serves high scale Mexican cuisine. The flavors are truly amazing. I highly recommend the braised pork or the burritos. Drinks are too die for. Stop by and see for yourself. You won't be disappointed. more

MMmmmm Mexican! 8/2/2010

Really good Mexican and Mexican fusion... but not your average taco + chalupa kind of Mexican... we are talking slow cooked savory pork dishes, served over mashed plantains... guacamole with pickled onions served on the side (this is soooo much better than it sounds!)...seafood options.... just really good, filling, make-your-mamma proud kind of meals. And a good selection of margaritas don't hurt either! Pros: Great menu-- like REAL homecooked meals... Cons: Tight space--but what do you expect in Chelsea! more

Love it! 5/30/2010

By far, one of the best Mexican places in the city...and it has been around for a long time for a reason. Great for foodies! Pros: blood orange margaritas Cons: tough to get a table at times more

Amazing Tex Mex 5/18/2010

Best tex mex in Chelsea by far, easy to access by train or cab and food is spectacular. The Shrimp Tamal is a mst order and the Hangar Steak Burrito is filling and delicious. The staff are polite and on point. And the prices a very reasonable for the area. The only drawback is that it may be difficult for a person in a wheelchair to access the restrooms. Pros: Shrimp Tamal and Staff Cons: basement restrooms more

My Favorite Restaurant 5/13/2010

Been a regular for almost 20 years, brunch, lunch and dinner. Food is consistently great. Brunch is the best in NY. Lunch is one of the best values and dinner is amazing. The staff is helpful, knowledgable and fun. Margaritas are huge and perfect. Everything is fresh and delicious. I'm hoping for another 20 years - at least! Pros: Best Margaritas, great salsa, great staff Cons: Um, um, none more

PERFECTION 5/2/2010

I absolutely love this place! I am extremely picky when it comes to Mexican food and i'd like to think i'm an expert because, well....I'M MEXICAN! My mom had me spoiled with her godly cooking techniques, but this place makes me feel right at home when I need that taste of home. SERVICE: WARM, INVITING, AND SEXY! The people at Rocking Horse Cafe are like my extended familia. Everyone is gorgeous, attentive to guests, and proud of their food! I absolutely love Alfonso, Sean, & Jasmine! FOOD: Bursting with flavor! Every bite is literally like a fiesta in your mouth! Most Mexican food i've tried in the city was bland and boring. Rocking Horse Cafe is quite the opposite. The complex combination of spices that Chef puts together is amazing and the twist to traditional Mexican food will leave you wanting more! I recommend: Quesadilla de hongo, any ensalada, frozen margarita WITH salt, & the tres leches. BUEN PROVECHO! Pros: Staff, food, atmosphere Cons: You may not be able to handle the AMAZING food! more

Not an upgrade 2/26/2010

After nearly 2 years away from the Rocking Horse, I returned with friends for dinner after watching the Jets knock themselves out of the playoffs. I don't know when they remodeled, but that turned out to be the least of the changes. The food was not up to par from my recollection. As a matter of fact, two of the three of us wound up feeling ill within an hour of completing our meal. VERY disappointed. I used to adore this place, it had long been a go to in the neighborhood. Pros: WAS good in the past Cons: Has gone way downhill more

  • The Scene
The bright mix of colors painted on the cafe's walls matches the vivid margaritas that sit on nearly every table and litter the sceney bar. The strong, fruity concoctions come with punchy flavors like passion fruit, strawberry and blood orange and draw a casual but fashion-forward crowd.

    The Food
This Chelsea favorite is known for its creative Mexican cuisine. The citrus-habanero marinated shrimp atop a mango and corn salsa could benefit from a bit more heat, but otherwise the starter pleases. From the "street food" menu, try the carnitas--the tender organic pork is complimented by tortillas and fresh guacamole--or the reliable burrito. The skillet of shrimp with papaya works as a kind of upscale fajita; its chipotle tomato puree nicely marries the caramelized papaya to the shrimp. The wild mushroom chile relleno gets overwhelmed, however, by its creamy sauce. End with tres leches, imaginatively topped with banana cream.
