Guessing at Electronic Issues 10/18/2011

I took a BMW into Roberts Automotive for a passenger airbag light that would not go out. He ran a diagnostic test and I was told that the instrument cluster needed to be replaced at over $1000. He replaced the device and the problem came back the 3rd time I started the car. I took it back and he ran another diagnostic test and told me that it appeared to be the "Clock Spring" in the steering column. This would cost over $400 dollars to fix and I told him that he did not fix the problem the first time and I was not going to pay another $400 for him to keep guessing. He then proceeded to charge me $47.50 for the second diagnostic test. I took the car to the BMW dealer and told him what was replaced and what Roberts had determined was the cause of the current problem. He looked at me and smiled saying that in 20 years of working on BMW cars, he has never seen the instrument cluster cause that problem or a clock spring break in a BMW steering column but they would be happy to run a diagnostic test and fix the problem. I was called within 2 hours after leaving the car for service and they told me that it was fixed. The BMW service manager asked me if the car had been taken to a detail shop recently and I told them yes. The service manager told me that a connector under the passenger seat had come loose and they reconnected and cleared the fault. They charged me $108 and I have been driving the car over 6 weeks and the problem has not come back. Do yourself a favor and take the car to a dealer, it will save you money in the long term and the dealer will guarantee their work. more

HORRIBLE! 4/22/2011

Mr. Roberts convinced me that my 93 Volvo with 120k on it needed a new engine after it would not crank one evening after leaving a restaurant. He claimed the fuel regulator had failed thus flooding the engine's cylinders and thus ruining the engine. He claimed the engine was seized (although it still cranked) and that the push-rods were bent. I paid him to replace the motor at a tune of $3k cash for a used engine and all was well again. A couple years later I returned the car to him to diagnose a problem the car had idling. It would "surge" from low rpm to high rpm and was quite dangerous to drive as such. He kept the car for over two weeks, and then told me I needed a transmission. I gave the go ahead. I picked up the car, turned the key, and couldn't even leave the parking lot cause the car HAD NOT been fixed. He (literally) was running across the tracks to cash the check I had just written him. He refused to refund my money for his "time" and $2k later and a new transmission the car was still not fixed. I took the car to another mechanic, also a Volvo specialist, who had the car no more than 15 MINUTES before finding a loose vacuum hose under the intake manifold, which was causing the problem. This loose vacuum hose, was rotted and duct tapped together as Mr. Roberts apparently cuts corners and recycles old broken hoses. Years later I find out talking to some one that my car does not even HAVE push rods (as it was an overhead cam engine). Mr. Roberts is an incompetent, THIEF and how he has earned himself and ASE certification is beyond me. AVOID ROBERTS AUTOMOTIVE UNLESS YOU JUST NEED TO REPLACE EVERYTHING UNDER THE HOOD TO FEEL BETTER AND HAVE DEEP POCKETS! I WOULD NOT GIVE HIM ONE STAR. more
