Editorial review from Citysearch 9/30/2013

I was a member for a little over 3 years and watched the place go downhill, especially when the new owners took over last year. It has been really hard to watch since it was once a happy and fun place to take my kids. \r A few of the drawbacks are: \r - Employee checks often bounce and when this happens employees don't show up to work and quit on the spot which means childcare is closed and classes cancelled\r - Unprecedented employee turnover (I've never seen anything like it)\r - Carpet and showers dirty & falling apart at the seams \r - The equipment is old, always broken and not maintained\r - One Friday in September 2013 someone left a big pile of human sewage in front of the front door – if that doesn’t say something about the place I don’t know what would! \r - Almost all of the staff that are still there are unhappy and the general tone of the place is very depressing. \r - Also, you have to pay for parking, which they claim to reimburse you for ($4/hour)\r - Much of the menu at the cafe is unhealthy and they have an ice cream freezer at eye level for kids! Not something a ""health club"" should have. \r I would not recommend going here under any circumstance! more

Best Swimming lessons for kids!! 7/31/2008

If you have ever taken your young child to a park district swim lessons and felt it lacked...well...instruction of any kind, then I think you will find the lessons at the RAC incredibly worthwhile. It costs a bit more as a non-member, but just in the short time that our son has been taking lessons (about 9 months) this three year-old has made huge strides being in the pool/lessons without a parent, going under water, swimming by himself to the side of the pool, and generally loving being in the water. This is especially significant given that he used to cry and cling to us in water. We've had the chance to take lessons from Ryan and Jossie, both of whom our son adores. While they each have unique styles, both share a playful but direct style of communication and interacting with the kids that builds immediate trust and respect. I have recruited several friends to take their kids here and while each had initial concerns about the cost or about it being too hard to get to from NE Portland, they too are converts and BIG fans after seeing their kids make such progress and having fun. more

Not Relaxing 2/18/2008

Unfortunately I went to this place on my Birthday and I specifically didn't want a ""gym-like"" experience. Well it totally is. I even asked before I came to ensure that I would have a relaxing spa experience! When I arrived 1/2 an hour early to sauna before my massage the girl let me just sit there, no offering of water or where to go for the 1/2 an hour. Finally I asked about their sauna which the girl said I could ""after my massage"". But when I informed her that I was early she told me it was ""upstairs"". After telling her I had never been there and I didn't know where to go ""please help!!"" She pointed me up to the gym. YUCK! I was almost run over by some meat-heads and the ditzy girl @ the gym desk took 3 people before me while I stood there and watched! She said she assumed I was going to the locker room. But guess what I had NO CLUE where to go! It was such a nightmare I canceled all my appointments on the spot and went home. When I canceled the girl didn't looked at all fazed she didn't even apologize! Luckily after I got out of there my birthday was the best I ever had! I know its cliche but after the bitter the sweet never tasted so good! more

Great club 8/23/2006

The staff at the club is friendly and helpful and the cafe is a gem. Soups & salads made from scratch with a healthy approach makes it not only convienent but delicious. The addition of the Point Spa is a real treat. Janet gives the best massage I've ever had. A+ all around. Pros: Food, parking, childcare Cons: Decor, needs more classes more

Perfect place to workout 2/13/2006

The RAC is an exceptional facility with some of the most knowledgable and friendly staff in Portland. The group exercise classes are offered at convenient times for people who work in the downtown area. All of the cycling classes are particularly rewarding to attend as are the yoga and strength training class. The locker rooms are some of the best in Portland with steam, sauna, towel service, and all the amenities. Overall, a top-notch facility! Pros: Friendly Staff, Group Fitness, Locker Rooms Cons: Classes are full, Boring Decor more

Rever Place Athletic Club is one of the Cleanest Culbs I've used. I especially like the Cafe - which offers a variety of choices. The personal trainers are helpfull and the club offers parking, which is difficult to find down town. more
