All reviews seem positive

overall bar 4/2/2009

I live in the Richmond and have heard so much about riptide. I decide to make my way there on a wed night. It is decievingly larger inside than the front door displays. The crowd was suprisingly moderate younger crowd. There was a dj playing rock fusion hip hip (if that makes sense). The bartender was quick to serve. Tap is average at best (guiness,Stella rounding the tap). Don't know if he needed a barback but the one side of the bar was piled high with used pints. But overall, the place is fun, although I've heard that it's terribly slow sometimes (as with all bars). It's definitely a good locals joint with good weekend potential Pros: Example: best croissants in town Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

Riptide: Best Bar at the Edge of Western Civilization 3/29/2008

I'm here to tell you: The Riptide doesn't disappoint. I am like as not to be disappointed when I go practically anywhere else in the city, with exception to that (surfer owned) red place in the Mission with the name that makes me forget, or Skullbunnies. Here's why: the music might be as good as anything you can pay for anywhere, (Ralf Carney drunk with his impeccable jazz drummer some Sunday nights) or as bad as (random open mic Monday could be), they play surf movies on Wednesdays and the bar tenders are happy to see me, know me by name, and sometimes even feed me greasy wings to go with my fistfull of barrels movie. Last Wednesday they had this SurfRider event. It was so crowded me and my girl couldn't get in. We ended up next door at Brother's and got a slice and a beer there, and listened to all the downtown dudes with their makeup girls whine about how crowded it was and how this was the only thing going on that night in SF. Well, there was a 10 foot Pierson Arrow being raffled off, and even thought I had the winning ticket but couldn't get in, I was cool with it. Now, where else can I go, get a locally brewed lager (Budweiser) that sometimes tastes like sweet mana, or the other day tasted like fermented Antioche water, and then win a longboard? You know, there are nights I'll walk in, Jeff will poor me a draft of Bud, the Bartendresses will flirt (and are they hot? YES), I can make friends, share rounds, get drunk and walk a block home. They've got a great jukebox, they let you eat pizza from next door at the bar or by the fire. So, if you have a bar you can walk to, then by all means. If you want to go to a bar where the surfers are real watermen, the women are the real type of beautiful, my landlord is drunk, his ex affair just smacked him over the head with a Heineken bottle, and there are a handful of Sundays with the best live music in town, take the train, and don't whine about the beer. Pros: You might win a surfboard Cons: Dogs got kicked out more

Thanks for the reminder... 3/24/2007

Geez....I was just looking for some new places out in the Sunset to visit on my upcoming weekend visit. I moved back to Maui from SF several years ago, and, from the sound of these reviews, things haven't changed much. Is it the frigid, always blown-out OB surf or the months and months of foggy weather? You sound grouchy. Maybe you need a vacation. I'll definitely come out and see what the fuss is about though. P.S. Locals drink Heineken, anyway. more

Kook Douche Bags like the first reviewer should stay away from this bar.. 11/22/2006

The Riptide is what it is. If you don't like it, don't come back. There are plenty of asss-holes and plenty of nice people there just like every bar in every city, except we get a violent sub-species of pseudorednecks that pose as real surfers by talking about how Kona is a tourist beer, whatever dude, you are such a douche, if you like Hawaii, please go back there, because you sukk. You are precisely the type of idiot that belongs at the real sh*t hole Pittsburgh's down the street by Judah and 47th. The current tap line up is: Lagunitas IPA, Trumer Pils, Pyramid Hefe (sux), Guiness, Stella, disgusting Riptide Red Ale, and they now have Negro Modelo in the bottle, oo, that's a beer from mexico, probably for touristas??? Anyway, sometimes the music is great, sometimes it sukks. It has gotten better overall. Sometimes its dead and depressing. Sometimes its packed. Just like every other bar. Except, it can get the occasional asss-hole surf "expert" who really should stay away from OB and go get hooked on Ice in Paradise. We are a tight knit bar and we don't need you there, you sit there and focus on how not gay you are while sipping schwag like pabst. yuck. To everyone else, come on in. You might have a good time, you might not. Just like everywhere else. Signed, A Real Patron of that bar for the last two and a half years since the first day it reopened. Pros: Lack of concern about who you are, scumbag or pacific heights loser Cons: letting people like the first reviewer in more

undiscovered gem, needs better draft beer 4/14/2006

First off the draft beer selection is horrible! I mean Kona? Come on are you serious? Thats like Budweisers fake brainwashed tourist brand that nobody but the suburban haole tourist drink that are too stupid to know any better. One bright spot is the RipTide Red brought in from beach chalet. But where is the Fat Tire, Full Sail or even Pabst? This would be the perfect Pabst bar or full sail (beach beer) bar. The fire place is great, with cool old style feel and beach charm. The backroom is kind of a waste of space especialy during busy times. There is enough room to fit a pool table back there or a couple bar tables. This place could be very cool and is worth a visit, but if you are a draft beer guy like me, it could use some help. Pros: cool indoor feel, well kept secret, fireplace Cons: poor draft choices, opens late more

Sunset Now... 4/14/2006

The new owners did a fantastic job re-vamping this spot. Check out the calendar for open mic, DJ, band listings, events such as happy hr, ladies night, etc. I walked in and immediately OUT of the old spot (when it was Sandbar) and now, as a 30 something local female...feel very comfortable at the Riptide. It is a nice addition to the neighborhood - nice to be able to walk to a fun bar, meet neighbors and enjoy a Riptide Red (tasty beer!). more

  • In Short
A great haunt for a secret rendezvous or post-surf beer by the fire, this bar has the authentic feel of a small, rough-hewn Tahoe watering hole--though it's mere seconds from the crashing Pacific. Slow and sleepy until late, when the live music or a DJ takes over, the tavern boasts a crackling fireplace, giant stuffed moose head, redwood booths and laid-back patrons all hoping no one else discovers their hideaway.
