A great neighborhood bar! 12/28/2006

The Red Lion is not your typical trendy Lincoln Park bar and that's the great thing about it. The first level is tight quarters and has a sloping floor and few tables. Sidle up to the bar and chat with the bartender and you will most certainly learn something you didn't know before. Colin is one of the owners and oftentimes behind the well stocked bar. The Lion has been around for quite a long time and has some Chicago history behind it. I can't recall all of the things, but I believe that one of the things is that the Shakespeare Theatre started there. English fare is on the menu as well as chicken sandwiches and burgers. It is filling and tasty and a good price. more

A Little Piece of England 5/25/2006

A great pub, and you may be paying $4 for a beer, but you'd be paying that (or more) any where else in Lincoln Park. The interior is quaint and reminds me of the set designs used in the Harry Potter movies, although the Red Lion seems more real and natural in its disheveledness. Fyi, the owner bartender is often a little surly. Maybe I just don't know him well enough. The food is good, especially when you eat it on the rooftop patio, which is alley-side, making it a relatively quiet place to enjoy a pint. more

Feel like a Brit in Chicago 3/13/2006

Don't ever use the upstairs women's bathroom. Ever! (It's definitely haunted--especially after 2 or 3 pints). The downstairs has a very ramshackle appearance, lending to the overall quaintness of the pub. The upstairs has another bar, 2 connected rooms and a rooftop patio with a tree in the middle (one of the most pleasant and relaxed "beer gardens" in the city). The owners are usually on the premises, and behind the bar, very aloof but friendly with the regulars. I recommend the fish and chips, shepherd's pie and scones, along with a Fuller's. more

Miss London 2/26/2006

I went to the Red Lion Pub after a night at three penny, only to find that this little gem was pretty expensive, but also really, really charming. I don't like paying four dollars for a beer- but if you go there for food and a good ghost story, you won't go home feeling unfulfilled. This place is supposedly (according to the employees and the menu, anyway) haunted much like old English Pubs would be. It looks like something in London and the food is authentic almost to the T. The place is intimate, friendly and aside from the price of a drink, I'd say almost perfect... more
