A great Bicycle Shop, good authentic costumer service.....a true Portland experience. 9/7/2008

I have been riding my bike in Portland since I have lived here. I have had to use most every bike shop in this city. Most of which I can best describe as pretentious. The Recyclery is anything but. The owner has to be one of the nicest guys in this city. All the bike techs have an extended knowledge of bicycle repair, and all are involved in building bikes from scratch. This is a unique way to run a shop, allowing for a great array of different styles and different price ranges of fine bicycles, all of which are recycled. If your looking for parts that are in good condition, here you will find in every nook and corner all the parts you need to fix your bike. If the space is available, and usually the employees are happy and willing to make it available and help you with the repair of your bike. All in all if you trust in the fact that old things still work, and better yet if they are taken care of, they actually work better than new things.....then you will find quite an eclectic collection of old bikes brought back to life at the Recyclery.....You might not find a "Pierce" bike here, but I guaranty you will find something you wont do without. Pros: great customer service, great location, great Portland feel Cons: ferocious watch dog more

Best Bike Shops in Portland 7/24/2008

I seriously don't know what these other people are talking about. I have been a loyal customer of The Recyclery since they were on Hawthorne and I love this shop. Everyone is really helpful and friendly and every bike I've bought there or had fixed there has been in perfect condition. And as for knowingly selling stolen bikes, I have personally witnessed the owner turn down sketchy people who are obviously trying to sell a stolen bike and they follow all the city mandated 30 day holds on used bikes. Seriously if you want good prices and reliable, honest service, The Recyclery is where it's at. BEST BIKE SHOP IN PORTLAND HANDS DOWN Pros: prices, service, atmosphere, convience, parking...everything! Cons: The haters! more

bullsh!t bike shop 6/28/2008

The idea of a bike shop dedicated to 'recycling' older bikes is great. I love and ride old bikes myself. But if you are looking for a shop to get yourself rolling without contributing to the evils of society, DO NOT go here. Those who live here know to stay away. Those who are new to our fair city might be tempted to support this dump, but should go to a real bike shop instead. The Community Cycling Center, North Portland Bike Works or City Bikes are legit shops. Take your business there. The Recyclery has a long history of buying/selling sub par bicycles. You want to ride a bike right? Do you want to support a place that might someday buy YOUR bike from a bum, only to repaint the frame and part out the components? No way. The bicycling community of Portland is alive and kicking, but I will never understand how a place like this can survive without being held accountable for their actions. If you want to support meth addicts and thievery, go buy a poorly maintained heap from the Recyclery. Otherwise, patronize a real bike shop with ethics and sincere community involvement. Pros: convenient for bike thieves Cons: inconvenient for those who don't want their bikes stolen more

bad work 6/4/2008

I like the recyclery for their casual, low key feel and cool bikes. I do not like their service. I bought a schwin traveler from them and within a day had to bring it back to get the brakes and gears adjusted (that should have been done before I purchased the bike). Less than a month later (after gentle street riding) I again had issues with the brakes and brought the bike back. This time, when I picked up the bike, I rode it home and on the way home I noticed the bolt holding my back tire on had been loosened to the point that IT FELL OFF!!! I fixed that problem myself and rode my bike the next day on a long road trip, 15min into riding my gears jumped off! I was completely frustrated with the work the recycler had done. Had no one checked the bike before they sold it? I promptly took my schwin to City Bikes where they gave her a loving tune up and now she rides GREAT! Props to City Bikes! Pros: cool bikes Cons: bad work more
