Editorial review from Citysearch 12/28/2013

Excellent restaurant. We visited this restaurant a few years ago and loved the food. Coming back this time we couldn't remember the name or location if this restaurant and spent two days (not the full two days but we walked around the area both nights we were in town) and luckily stumbled upon it. I was surprised with the negative reviews about the service and the food. They were farthest from what we encountered. The staff including the owner himself were very pleasant and very friendly. The food was excellent (I had the homemade ravioli stuffed with lobster) and it was delicious. The prices were reasonable and were pleasantly supervised when we got the bill. Would highly recommend to anyone. The clientele seemed to be local / regulars which we thought was one of the attractive qualities as we were looking for a non-touristy place to eat. We will be back each time we visit the city. more

Rude, rude owner and waiter, horrible food. Stay away! 2/16/2009

After living on the UES for several years, and always passing this place, we decided to try it. Big mistake. All of our food: appetizer, salad and 2 pasta dishes were terrible and overpriced. When we sent one of the entrees back because it was inedible, the waiter argued with us and then they tried to charge us for it. When we told the owner that we couldn't even eat it and sent it back whole, he argued with us as well. He even yelled at us at our table. Service like this is appalling no matter where you go, but especially considering the prices they charge. Don't waste your time or money. There are plenty of other places on the UES and elsewhere in this city. Pros: Nothing Cons: Everything!!!!!!!!!!!!!! more

Rudest Staff Ever - Walked Out 4/29/2008

Sorry if this is re-post (having computer trouble): Pros: was empty on a sunday afternoon so we thought it'd be an easy, relaxing enivorment Cons: worst treatment I have ever received in a NY restaurant. Ever. And I've lived here for 28 years. more

Ordinary at best. Average food with bad service. 10/27/2007

I have lived on the UES for 4 years and with so many restaruants on the UES, there is no way we would go back to this one. Atmosphere is tired and stuffy. The ceiling has nice bronze colored tiles and know this because had time to study it while waiting an HOUR for my food (which was ordinary at best). I had the fettuccine bolognese. Seriously, you can get a better meal at most any italian restaurant on the UES. The waiters speak bearly any english and ours was less then apologetic after such a long wait. Bottom line - if you want a unique experience with good food and great service, don't go to Quattro Gatti. I should have went to the food emporium across the street and cooked at home. Pros: I never have to go there again. Cons: service, menu, stale bread more

Very average 1/22/2007

The food was very avearge. My group had a range of appetizers and pasta dishes and none stood out as either especially good or especially bad. The service was generally disinterested--not terrible, but also not terribly helpful. The atmosphere is a bit odd, with surrealist paintings clashing badly with the otherwise muted decor. The wine list is very nice, but given the underwhelming overall experience I'd rather buy a bottle of wine from a store and make pasta at home. There are better Italian places in the neighborhood that charge the same amount or less, so there isn't really any reason to come here. Pros: wine list Cons: Average food, disinterested service, slightly pricy for what it is more

Know what you are getting 11/12/2006

I went to order the $15 pasta Bolognese (as recommeded in a previous post), and the thick accented waiter told me- with much gusto- that the Bolognese was a boring standard menu item, and I must order one of the two daily pasta specials... So, I order the tagliatelli with truffles. Pros: Good food Cons: I was ripped off. Service was poor. more

Four Cheers for Quattro Gatti! 1/19/2006

Yes, it's true, it's better to be a regular here. But that's easy to accomplish once you're addicted to the Pasta Bolognese, which my husband and I recommend with the homemade Papardelle pasta. We have been eating at this charming neighborhood spot for two years and have only strayed from our addiction twice - both times being pleased - yet we can't get enough of the Bolognese! Mario was our favorite waiter - he welcomed us by name, like guests in a friend's home - but he is sadly gone and we have yet to bond as closely with anyone else (one of the waiters is admittedly a little grumpy, but that can be overcome with smiles). Nevertheless, ""Quattro Gatti"" still offers a satisfying meal, in a pleasant ambience, at a reasonable price. In good weather, sit outside, and you will be momentarily transported to Italia! Pros: Bolognese, Ambience, Price Cons: 1 Grumpy waiter more

only for regulars 6/17/2003

Okay, Id rather pour my own wine anyway, and lack of a cooler for the white wine is no big thing. And the abrupt attitude of the waiter could be just considered professional. And I didnt mind that they seemed most attentive to people they knew. And when they brought two veal marsalas instead of one marsala and one veal medallions and the server refused to deal with it, we felt we could live with it. But when we were charged accordingly and politely tried to have the bill adjusted and were told in a nasty and condescending tone that we didnt know what we were talking about --- even though both plates featured identical scaloppini with identical mushroom and identical wine sauce --- I decided it was just not a nice place, at least for newcomers. Pros: pleasant room Cons: mediocre food, nasty waiter more

cute place, excellent food 9/24/2002

Even the Italians from Italy vote that the food here is not so commercial and quite similiar to the cuisine they are used to at home and back in Italy, best choice for true diners with a real palate for quality food and ability to distinguish between fresh fish and meat, and commercial volume italian pasta! The food was excellent, very fresh fish and meat, excellent wines, great desserts, nothing is dissapointing int his cute upper east side italian run place, even the service and ambiance is very charming! great for a date, except be prepared for the damage on the wallet after a three course meal, it can get a little high on the price side, but definitely worth it! wouldnt recommend any other itaian restaurants in that neighbrhood,e xcept buon gusto Pros: food, ambiance, service more
