Finally, the Purple Onion is reopened! 8/21/2005

The Purple Onion used to be one of San Francisco’s most revered comedy joints. It hosted all the big names of comedy in the 80’s, especially Robin Williams. It also gave stage to a very exciting improvisation scene. Then, inexplicably, it just all died and went away. Thank god The Purple Onion is back and on the comedy scene again. You have to check out the fresh faces of San Francisco comedy and The Purple Onion is probably the best place to do it. more

Hilarious 8/17/2005

While the Purple Onion as a venue was cute and cozy, the cocktail waitress was attentive and effective, the comedians were absolutely hilarious! I went to the Purple Onion for my first live comedy show and it was amazing. Todd Barry, the headling comedian (who does Romulon from Aqua Teen Hunger Force-of which I am a huge fan) totally dominated the whole show. I was so taken by his flawless ability to rule the crowd, exploiting all opportunites to make a laugh at the expense of anyone who drew attention to them (by getting up, or just by sitting in the front row, which we were). Of course I was not spared, and the jokes he made at my expense definitely had me gasping for air. A fantastic experience all around! more
