good chinese food, ambience 7/13/2007

I've come here at least 30 times, when I'm in the mood for some chinese food I usually go to this place. You might get kinda worried at first cause from the outside it looks really gh3tto and there are bums all over the place, but if you're okay with that this is a good place to come late night\r \r They have a wide variety of food from american-chinese-japanese, etc... I recommend getting the bitter melon beef. \r \r The only thing I really dont like about this place that is some of the waiters dont speak English too well and you can see them take breaks and smoke outside.. but still - great food, place inside is clean. go figure Pros: good food, nice ambience, price is right Cons: service, location + parking more

A sure bet for those late nights.. 3/31/2007

I began dining at Purple Dot when it had first opened, back when they had their glittery tabletops. I miss those tabletops. Anyway, I went back after the management had [apparently] changed hands and was not impressed...so I stayed away for a while. Until of course, one late night when I was craving something salty and couldn't figure out where to eat. That was when I discovered their salty fish fried rice. To dieeeeee for if you're looking for that perfectly salty but not over the top dish. Along with that I love to order the House Special Chow Mein which they use the crispy noodle to create. It has shrimp, squid, and bok choy among other things in it. It doesn't exactly make sense with the other dishes, but I ADORE their french toast dish. The french toast is deep-fried, and has a sort of creamy jam in the center. Topped with lots of butter, this is a huge treat. The extra-special thing about this place is that it's open very late into the night, so you can always count on being satisfied at whatever time it is that you decide you're hungry. Pros: great late-night dining Cons: street parking more

Great for large groups during late nights. 2/16/2007

As for style, this Chinese restaurant stands out from the rest. Pop music videos are played on a couple of TVs, and the decor is contemporary. I?ve eaten here at least a dozen times, and have mostly been satisfied. The salt and pepper squid is a great choice, and the Mongolian beef is always a winner. I?m not a fan of the deserts. I once did takeout, and there was a tiny fly under the desert. You can also get bubble tea here, which is OK if you don?t mind pearls that aren?t fresh. The sizes of the plates aren?t the largest in Chinatown, but the quality is usually above average. The congee here is good, but not the best. The service is decent, compared to the low standards of China town. Sometimes the kitchen staff gets overworked, and food can take a very long time to come out. Purple Dot is open very late on Fridays and Saturdays closing around 4AM, which makes it a great choice for late night ?sobering up food.? Pros: Late night hours for Friday and Saturday Cons: Food waiting time more
