Editorial review from Citysearch 9/18/2013

I don't usually go to Citysearch for reviews any longer - it seems to be outdated and old fashioned compared to Yelp. I also noticed that there are no dates on these reviews so I've no idea when they were written. I am posting this on 9-18-2013. Just got back from another great dinner at Pulcinella's. We usually go for dinner once a week and are always happy with our service and food. The red sauce is my favorite and the pesto. The lasagna is great, as is the chicken parm (no idea what that other person was talking about. It's always a big, tender piece of chicken and certainly NOT frozen tenders) White clam sauce is another favorite for our trio. Pizzas are fantastic and the calzones! We like to go earlier in the week so it isn't so noisy and crowded since I am pretty noise-sensitive anyway and don't go anywhere on a weekend because the chance of encountering loud kids is greater. Nice family-type atmosphere, though. We feel like part of the family there and will miss it when we have to move to Florida next year. :( more

Everyone's entitled to their opinion and maybe you had a bad experience, do try again, I 've been going there for 18 years and love the family style, prices, portions and yes authentic Italian style foods, the marsala is the best I have yet to taste, and I'm from NJ Italian, eggplant parm, marinara sauce and tomato sauce excellent, chicken picata, and specials are always excellent, homemade rolls a sidesalad with awesome Italian homemade dressing, and a dip for the bread is included , huge portions worth the family enviornemtn, fance it is not, good food it is!\r more

Will NOT be going back 7/2/2011

After getting incorrect directions from one of the people working in the restaurant, we arrived with about a 15 minute wait. We sat, ordered, and were brought our food. Problem is, I was brought one of my friends' dishes and told it was mine (she ordered eggplant parm, I ordered chicken parm). Someone else ordered Chicken Marsala that tasted as if it had been sitting for a while and the mushrooms tasted bitter and burnt. My chicken parm was a little tough, but wasn't horrible. We ordered the Lemoncello Mousse Cake for dessert. While it was pretty good, it was obviously a frozen cake. Definitely not worth the $6 they charge. The final blow was at the register. When I went to pay, some how, my bill ended up being $55, when it should have been closer to $37. With the noise level being over the top and the place being so tightly packed, I was ready to go, and didn't feel like arguing with the cashier. I will NOT be going back to this loud, unauthentic Italian wanna be restaurant again and would not recommend it to anyone else either. How it ended up with ""Rated Number One,"" I'll NEVER know. more

Worth another try 5/13/2011

Service was excellent and the food was good for a strip mall restaurant, but average Italian otherwise. Good value as well. The biggest distraction was the noise level. Noticed the ceiling tiles were plastic, likely the source of the sound din. more

satisfactory 4/18/2011

Good basic food, ok wine list, service sometimes seems to be provided by kids, who can't all ways answer questions. It also would be nice if the owner would shave. more

First time great experience! 11/18/2009

if you are in the mood for real italian food this place is great! they're menu have a big variety, im vegetarian and my husband isn't. We both had a great dinner the atmosphere is romantic witch is great for couples! The service was awsome this short little waitress is the best we'll be back for the food and for the excellent service recived from her! more

Mirabella 10/23/2009

Mirabella was great. She was so nice and we would come back just because of her; however, the food was more than good enough to warrant our return! Pros: good food, great service Cons: it would be nice if there were booths more

Don't expect ""authentic"" 10/6/2009

I figured I'd start with the ""pollo parmesiana"" since it was my first visit. Make that the last visit since they use frozen chicken tenders as their meat in a signature dish. That didn't quite match the description on the menu as hand breaded chicken cutlets. They charge $14 for this dish which has about $2 worth of product slopped together. Pros: friendly staff Cons: serious corner cutting cuisine more

Tiny place- great big taste 6/8/2009

If you want real Italian- you've come to the right place. Their pizza is very good as well. The owners are very accommodating and extremely friendly. You can't go wrong. more

Great Food, Good Service, Small Restaurant 6/7/2009

Pulcinella's food is absolutely delicious. The bread they serve is always warm and completely addictive. The service isn't bad, but not extremely good. The restaurant is also very small, so it can get really crowded. It's worth the hassle though if you're in the mood for some great Italian Food! more

Terribly Disappointed : Today They Lost a Long Time Patron 4/21/2009

For nearly 2 years now, my company has been venturing to Durham for lunch at Pulcinella's. The food is (for the majority of the time) fantastic and the owner seems to be a top notch guy.\r \r However, for the majority of this time we've always had a joke about getting the kid with the short black hair. It never fails that you will have bad service with this waiter, but today took the cake. When the table leaving as you sit down says ""good luck getting some water"", it's never a good sign. The kid also failed to bring bread as well, something very important in a setting such as Pulcinella's.\r \r If the problem is that it was too busy, that's never the case. Never have I felt scorn for asking for water prior to today. In the shape the economy is in today, customer service should be your top priority. Until this kid gets his attitude straightened out, try at all costs to avoid his service. Not one refill, check up, or smile the entire lunch. Only from the owner did we get any of these.\r \r This is inexcusable, to the point that I took the time out of my day to write this review. Pros: The Owner, The Food Cons: The Younger Waiter with Short Hair more

slightly disappointed 4/8/2009

I have made it a habit to go there atleast once a week. At first I ignored the service (young kids usually not to0 focused on their work) until this last adventure.\r \r I went there this week and ordered the special. I had a difficult time getting refills of water and ice and when my meal came it was luke warm at best. I was surprised because usually the food is hot. \r \r When I called the waitress over and told her, she merely looked at me and offered no suggestions. I did not see Reno around so I just ask it to be wrapped up to take home. \r \r I understood that the waitress was more interested in waiting on as many tables as she could than the quality of her service. \r \r It's a shame because I did enjoy the environment and food.\r \r Pros: good food Cons: service more

Love this place! 3/31/2009

I have been a diner at Pulcinella's for years, recently they have redecorated and changed up the menu, and it is amazing. I am a huge fan of the chicken marsala and the homemade marinara sauce! The atmosphere in this restaurant is so cozy! Although if you are in a rush on a busy night, i.e. Fri. or Sat MAKE A RESERVATION! My husband and I dine here at least once a week, and are always satisfied! Kristen is usually our server, ensuring that we have quality service! We love this place; food, managment and other staff all together. CHECK IT OUT! Pros: Best authentic Italian food in DURHAM more

Great Family Restraunt! 1/5/2009

Pulcinella's has some of the best Pizza I have tasted! Great service, very warm inviting dining room. Great for small groups, they will take reservations! more

Great food, family-friendly atmosphere 9/22/2008

Pulcinella offers tasty Italian fare in a warm atmosphere that has been cultivated over several years by its local owners. The Chicken Marsala is my favorite! Buon appetito! more

If you want bad service and mediocre Italian come here. 8/24/2007

I have been to this restraurant many times over the years and never have I had such bad service as I did the other night. I was very disappointed. First, after he had been staring at our table for about 10 min, I had to go and ask the owner just so our table could get some water and order our dinner. Although very apologetic, the owner (and the waiter that followed) did not do much to redeem the service. We asked for more bread, did not get it. We waited for our check for what seemed like forever while the owner and our waiter chit chatted with other tables and customers. Don't waste your time. There are plenty of other good Italian restraurants with superior service in Southern Durham. more

Always a Great Dining Experience 3/21/2007

I really do like this place. It's what I would call a good neighborhood, family-friendly restaurant. The ambience is simple and open, and while it can get a bit noisy depending on who else is dining, we have never had a bad experience here. The service is attentive but not overbearing, and the food is always excellent. I highly recommend it. The eggplant parmesean is one of my wife's favorites. Pros: Good parking, good value Cons: Kinda far from where I live (Bahama) more

Best Priced Italian Food in the Triangle 2/10/2007

Great portions, great sauces (especially their garlic toppings and marsala), and the best bread and dipping sauce around. I'd love to see these guys bottle and sell their homemade olive/sundried tomatoes/garlic dipping sauce, but, they say its made fresh every morning and bottling it would take away the flavor. Very friendly service and by far the best value for an authentic Italian fare in the Triangle (you must try the pink vodka sauce). Pros: Value, True Italian Fare Cons: Ambience more

Delicious Authentic Italian with Huge Portions 11/25/2006

My husband and I have eaten here twice with friends and we all loved it. The food is amazing with large portions and the owner and staff are very friendly. We have not been disappointed with any of our selections. You must try this restaurant!!! Pros: Authentic, Delicious food, friendly staff, large portions and reasonable prices more

Excellent authentic Italian food in a family setting 9/14/2006

You won't be disappointed by the authentic Italian food available, and don't be concerned about the low price. Be sure to give one of thier pizza's a try with some friends and you'll leave happy and full, with a check that won't cost you an arm and a leg. Portions are generous in size and you will most likely bring some home to continue the experience for the following day's lunch.\r \r Ask for some of thier bread and oil dip which makes an excellent starter for any meal.\r \r A meal here will not disappoint. Pros: food, cost, ambiance Cons: none known more
