Editorial review from Citysearch 2/14/2013

I've had the pleasure of attaining my New York Driver's License through the Professional Driving School of the Americas.\r \r The required 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course Class they offered was informative, surprisingly enjoyable, and the staff was prompt, professional, and courteous throughout the whole process.\r \r On my initial visit on Jan 10th, based on availability that same day, my DMV Road Test was originally scheduled for the 1st week of March.\r \r Upon my request, they've fulfilled their promise to find and reschedule my DMV Road Test which took place on Feb 01, an appointment conveniently booked a month earlier than I expected.\r \r In my busy line of work as a buyer/merchandiser in the fashion industry, all of my expectations were met.\r \r I highly recommend the Professional Driving School of the Americas. \r \r Thank you Wilma, Irene, Joyce (Shyness), and Manny for all your help and support.. Happy Valentine's Day!\r \r All the best, Edward M. more

I highly recommend this driving school. 9/14/2011

I had some driving experience abroad and needed a refresher course to get an American driving license. I took a five hour package with Jerry who is an excellent instructor. He prepared me for the road test which I passed the first time I took it. He explained me all the technicalities of driving in NYC and helped me to get rid of bad driving habits. His attitude was highly professional and he found an approach corresponding to my needs.\r \r I also took two hours with Noel who is an excellent instructor too.\r \r I highly recommend this driving school for both beginners and those who have some driving experience abroad and need to get an American driver license.\r more

Pricey but worth it 8/14/2011

Jerry - my instructor - was very helpful. I booked a road test package. He walked me through some of the things that they look for in the test, he was very patient. Taught me some really nifty tricks. The guys has 20 years worth of experience teaching how to drive. If you guys ever need this service, I recommend you asking for Jerry - he's good! more

Highly recommend this School 8/10/2011

I highly recommend this driving school. I completed my motorcycle license with Gerry, he was very informative and thorough, prior to the test we covered every single possible scenario which gives you all the confidence required to pass the test. \r \r The cars and motocycles are in great condition too.\r \r Thanks Gerry you're the best! more

Excellent NY Driving School 3/16/2011

I wanted to get a NY license (already have Australian) and needed a company that could provide the 5 hour pre-licensing video. Had called 2 other companies who were pathetic (""oh we do not offer classes unless we get a minimum of 10 people), however I called the Professional Driving School and they offered a plethora of classes during the week and on the weekend, every week. I took the class and found out they also provide a package that provides 1.5 hours of driver training (aimed at those os us with experience), their driving school car and an experienced instructor. Thank you Teddy, you were amazing. He provided me with tips on reverse parking, where the actual exam would take place, and most importantly, calmed my nerves. I passed first go. Thanks to the school and most importantly Teddy. Amazing! more

Highly recommend! 2/7/2011

I took my road test today and I passed on my first attempt! The extra lesson and simulation road test before the actual test was very helpful. Not to mention it helps to be in a SUV in this winter weather. Gerry is an AMAZING instructor! Learning to drive in the city is challenging but has its benefits as I was able to learn a lot from from all the difficult situations I encountered being in the city. I would class myself as nervous driver, but Gerry helped me feel confident and relaxed getting behind the wheel. He is very patient and calm at giving instructions. Overall, I had a positive experience with the driving school. The office staff are all very courteous and professional to deal with. The pickups and drop-offs are a huge plus for me since I work full time and I was able to schedule lessons during my lunch hour. I would definitely go back for more advanced lessons later on. more

TERRIBLE!!! I did the 10-hour class package. The instructor, Berchel, did not prepare me for the test at all. He constantly acted like he didn't care, checking his phone every five minutes, even taking phone calls during the lesson. Constantly led me into streets where we had to stand in traffic. He was nonchalant and kept telling me ""fine, fine, you're ready"" so I thought I was in good shape and didn't complain. When I finally took the road test, it turned out my driving was completely subpar - I failed it miserably. When I complained, the manager was unhelpful and rude. I feel thoroughly scammed. Can't speak for the other instructors, but I was extremely dissatisfied with Berchel and with the management's accountability. DO NOT USE!!! more

Very professional! 11/16/2010

I had the best experience with the professional driving school! I took both my driver's license and motorcycle license driving test the same day and Jerry, my teacher, was very professional and prepared me for every little detail and made the experience very pleasant. You really feel the difference when somebody wants you to have good and successful experience. Also, the school called me several times to remind of my road test and seemed very much on top of things. more

Old Dog, New Tricks w/ ProDriveNY 9/25/2010

I am in my mid-30's and never drove a car; needless to say, the thought of being dumped in the middle of Manhattan for your first lesson, with no experience, is enough to deter most people getting started, so I was very apprehensive on my first day. I had Noel as my instructor, and looking back on it now, I am still surprised how fast he got me comfortable behind the wheel (and helped me gain enough confidence to pass my test the first time around). I had 15 lessons with him, and that was just enough to get me primed to have me drive us on the freeway to Long Island where the road test took place. Some people complain about their packages unnecessarily including picking up and dropping off, but I found it invaluable not having to lug myself up to 23'rd street in the middle of a work day, up to 4 times a week. My only complaint would be that I had a lot of rescheduling, some at pretty short notice. I had a lot of calls from their staff, and some confusion, but it ended up being sorted out pretty smoothly. I think it was around 40 days from the 5 hour class (which is hilarious) until my road test. I can highly recommend Noel, especially if you are a new driver like me. He also has a great sense of humor. more

Excellent School 9/15/2010

I had a fantastic experience and really appreciated the professionalism of my instructor Gerry who made me succeed in passing my motorcycle driving license.\r \r I highly recommend this driving school! more

Very positive experience! 7/13/2010

My experience with the Professional Driving School was really great! I found them very friendly, professional and reliable. The school would call and remind me several times about my appointments, about the 5-hour class which I did not find so terribly useless as many say. And of course I had the best instructor ever - Jerry, who always remained positive, friendly and helped me to feel confident on the road. I passed the road test from the first attempt. Keep up the good work!!! Pros: Truly professional and reliable more

Number 1! 5/6/2010

I bought a 10-lesson package from this school. I have never ever driven before. The first lesson was nerve-racking and stressful especially the first 15 to 20 minutes of the time. I couldn’t imagine myself steering around the city where it was too crowded for me. I decided beginners like me have the same kind of awkward experience as mine.\r My instructor is one kind of a ‘genius’. Easing up my nerves was his first concern. He was very calm and patient , saying things in a manner where I got relaxed and receptive. Once he felt I was comfortable, he would start giving me some helpful and effective instructions for my turns and stuff. Next thing I knew, I was getting the car parallel-parked. At the start, it was tough as I thought but this instructor made parallel parking so easy. The three-point-turn was simple for me. The office (by the way, the staff are all nice and professional) saved 90 minutes from my package for me to use on the day of the test-my final practice. \r It would have been uncertain for the road test if I didn’t have them as my driving school. With a special mention to Ray, he is a ‘mastermind’. So, you folks who wish to get your license with straightforwardness, this driving school is for you. \r Pros: pick-ups and drop-offs more

Excellent 12/16/2009

I was a Vespa novice and Jerry was my instructor. Calm, patient, clear, encouraging without making you feel you ""had it"" which made you try harder.\r The school is excellent and was money well spent. For anyone needing a motorcycle license (for a Vespa - and please buy one we need more in the city!) I cannot find any reason to complain. more

One driving school in NY that is truly OUTSTANDING! 11/10/2009

So here's the story---me and my friend had a fun deal after choosing this school. We signed up for the same package and taking lessons with different instructors, I had Ray and he had Vercel (?). The fun was, we always compare our instructors after each lesson, bigheading my instructor as better than his, claiming that he has a superior lesson than mine, that I drive better than him now, that he will pass the test with a better grade, so forth and so on. I know we both had incomparable instructors and the ""rivalry"" was all for fun. We both passed the test yesterday with bouyancy. As my friend gives credit to his instructor, I give credit to mine -Ray! My overall experience with this driving school is incredible; from accessible office location to professional office staff, from tidy and efficient cars to favorable driving locations, from excellent instructions to my hero, RAY!\r \r One driving school in New York that is truly OUTSTANDING!\r Pros: neat and efficient cars, outstanding instructors more

I called and tested out a number of driving schools which I needed to help me obtain my NY driver's license and I found this school the most professional and logical in giving details on the services they offer. A very friendly representative made clear to me different packages and proposed one of them as the most suited one for my need. \r \r I did my lessons after work and some of them during my lunchbreak. I also had a couple done on a weekend. Unnecessary to say, my instructor who was pleasant and 'genius', at first, weighed my skill up and paying more attention to my flaws and faults. Learning how to drive and prepping up myself to pass the driving test was not as tough as I thought. I give credit to my instructor, Berkel (not sure with the spelling) and to the entire Professional Driving School who put everything in order for me. A double thumbs-up for this company. THANK YOU, PROFESSIONAL DRIVING SCHOOL!\r You guys are truly professional! Pros: pleasant, professional and orderly Cons: nothing more

All-around positive experience 10/15/2009

Let's face it - there's nothing glamorous about driving schools in NYC. But this school is definitely a cut above the rest, from following up with customers to attracting good instructors. I am a reluctant driver and just got my licence 2 days ago (my first licence, at 45!) after just a few lessons with this school. I had taken classes at another school and failed the test just 2 months ago. This other school kept switching instructors on me, forgot one of my lessons - and sent me to the road test in a car held together with duct tape. My advice to student drivers is: shop around for a good school and a good instructor - they are not all created equal, although the prices don't seem to differ much. If you are a mature student, in particular, get a school and an instructor that will listen to your concerns. PDS was a great fit for me. They didn't just prepare me for the road test - they actually care about helping me being safe and smart behind the wheel. Pros: Real pros in a low-rent market more

Professional Driving School Changed My Life 9/11/2009

This was one of the best investments I ever made. I took the 20 hour package because I never drove before and was a bit intimidated, especially since I was going to learn in Manhattan. My instructor was Leo and he was amazing! He was on time for my lessons. He was very knowledgable, patient, friendly and has a great sense of humor. I felt relaxed from the first moment I got behind the wheel even with the crazy traffic in Manhattan. I always felt that he and the school were personally invested in my success. The folks at the school was friendly, professional and courteous. They always communicated with me in a timely manner if and when a lesson had to be changed. The only thing I would suggest to them is that if they have a student whose 5 hour class certificate expired at the time of the road test, they should re-issue a new certificate even though the appointment for the road test was made before the certificate expired. I was assured by a few people at the school that it wouldn't be a problem, but when I got to my road test, the first inspector wouldn't accept it and was upset because she was very busy and didn't want to spend the time on the phone with the driving school confirming the date the road test appointment was made. I was already nervous about taking the test and this problem made things a bit more distracting for me. Fortunately, the problem was resolved and I was able to take the test. Therefore, I would recommend that anyone who finds themselves with an expired 5 hour class certificate go up to the school and get a new certificate before showing up for the road test. Oh, and I passed on my first try thanks to Leo. I would recommend anyone thinking of learning to drive that they enroll in the Professional Driving School and be sure to ask for Leo.\r Pros: Professional, Courteous, Punctual, Good Communication Cons: Problem with 5 hour class certificate more
