The tacos are amazing. There are four 6/3/2012

The tacos are amazing. There are four different tacos that I like. Good margaritas too. Would recommend going during the week, as the lines can get really long on evenings and weekends. more

Tasty Food, Great Atmosphere 5/6/2011

There's a lovely worn-in feel that Por Que No? has established, despite the fact their Hawthorne location has only been there for a couple of years. Around dinner time, a line stretches out the door, embarrassing any nearby restaurant. Is it just a trend? No. It's really tasty. Homemade chips and tortillas, fresh juices and cocktails, bright and flavorful salsas, and lots of happy eating people. What's not to love? As someone that needs to eat a strict gluten-free diet, I can eat almost anything here. The tortillas and chips are corn, the breading on the fish is rice flour, and the cocktails are delicious. Friendly, upbeat staff make it a lively and lighthearted experience. No hipster scowls, just nice people. The order-at-the-counter style makes for a clever dine and take-off, and after a few visits, you'll realize why people line up at this Upper-Hawthorne haven. more

Very disappointing 1/4/2010

A fun atmosphere, but the food was lacking! Very bland and overpriced. My carnitas were so dry it was like eating straw. The margarita was very watered down. I will not be returning. Where is the good authentic Mexican in this town?!?!?!?! Pros: The atmosphere Cons: The food more

Delicious tacos! 11/22/2009

On a warm summer evening Por Que No is the perfect finish to a long stroll down Portland’s famous Hawthorne Blvd. Most nights a line of hungry taco lovers extends out the door. But don’t be discouraged, these lines always move quickly and are well worth the short wait. This affordable Mexican restaurant, with delicious tacos, house made juices, and the best chips money can buy, is the ultimate cheap eat. Although the tacos are quite small, and you need to order at least two to be full, they are packed with flavor and satisfaction. My favorite taco is the “pollo verde,” served on corn tortillas with shredded chicken, a scattering of cilantro, a punchy but not overly spicy verde sauce, and lime wedges to add extra flavor right before you put it into your mouth. On top of the great food, there is even better service and a charming atmosphere, complete with an outdoor eating area in the back. Head down to one of Por Que No’s two locations (Hawthorne of Mississippi) for a delicious, affordable lunch or dinner. Why not? Pros: best affordable mexican food Cons: may have long lines more

Too bad. 10/20/2009

My husband and I have gone here a few times. The last time we called to get take-out and they told us they couldn't put rice and beans with our $50 order of tacos, because their rice cooker was broken!!! Had they ever heard of pot and pans?? Pros: great space, cool vibe Cons: $$$$$ for so-so food + no one who knows how to cook more

Por Que No - Why not to go 8/26/2009

Por Que No is the perfect place to eat if you have the appetite of a super model. If you do not have that small of an appetite, do not dine there. The quality of the food does not make up for the pathetic ration of food you receive. Another con is their suggested tip on the receipt (15, 20, and 25%). That is absurd considering the length of the wait to order and that you have to bus your own table. Get your head out of the clouds Por Que No. Pros: Taste, atmosphere Cons: Price, portion size more

quick and yummy 7/20/2009

The food is yummy. The service was quick enough. My toddler enjoyed eating a big bowl of rice and beans, I enjoyed the pollo asado porque plate. The guac isn't spectacular. The simple salad on my plate was tasty. My mom enjoyed the special tacos of the day which were some kind of shrimp. Honestly, there is a reason there is a line out the door, other than that people like to stand in line. People like to eat good food. Given that there are so many great places to eat in Portland they aren't waiting in line to eat food they don't enjoy. This food is simple and savory. Not fancy. And I thought the portions were generous. Pros: pollo asado, rice and beans Cons: corn tortillas weren't great more

not worth it! super lame! 7/20/2009

Wow... the line out the door is beguiling! You'd think they'd actually have something going on in there! Ehh. The main reason i went here is because they have mexican coke, and because i've heard that they have good mexican food. Well... the former is true for sure. The latter, not so much. It's not awful, but after a few mouthfuls, and an empty bowl you're left wondering wait, what? Was that a sample? I hardly got to taste it. Seriously. I stood in line longer than it took me to eat my food. Ridiculous. The margarita i had was pretty good though... for close to $9! I definitely don't recommend going to Por Que No. A waste of time and money. Pros: decent $9 margarita, mexican coke Cons: overpriced, small portions, kids running around everywhere more
