Porque No made my wife vomit 3/7/2010

Never tried Porque No before so i called and placed a take-out order for two brian bowls, one with shredded chicken and the other with grilled. Also got 3 shreddded carnitas tacos and 3 shredded chicken tacos. Went and picked up the food brought it home, gave my wife the brian bowl with the shredded chicken. Less than 2 hours later she was violently VOMITING and had violent diarhrea. My wife is rarely sick and had no doubt the food was the cause of her illness. She says that she could still taste the bad meat or whatever it was the next day. For what its worth my brian bowl was not great but i didnt get sick. The shredded chicken was gristly and greasy and grilled chicken was tough. I would give Porque No! a failing review even if my wife hadnt gotten food poisoning. Most definitely Porque NO! Next step may be to report this to the health department. Pros: umm no Cons: read the review more

Good Tacos, Cheap 8/31/2009

Very good, tuesdays they have some sort of discount thing. Pros: the food, the price Cons: nope more

I try to go as often as I cn 8/31/2009

This place is awesome. My wife and I usually get out of there completely full and $20 poorer. Get the chips and salsa. 3 tacos is around $9.00 and is enough food to fill you up and make you happy, very happy. I was pretty amazed to see the few bad reviews for this place...some people are just needy or angry and there isn't a whole lot you can do for them. Pros: delicious, cheap Cons: sometimes a long line but it goes with the terriotry more

Yummy, yummy, yummy 5/22/2009

The fact that this is near my house makes it a bi-weekly stop for me. I can't get enough of it. The Brian's Bowl with grilled chicken is a must. And try the cucumber slices with guacamole. It's amazing. Yes, there's normally a line, but it's well worth the wait. Oh! I almost forgot... they do fresh juices that can be added to their margarita... DELICIOUS! The carrot-passion fruit is my favorite. :) Pros: best food Cons: long line more

Not so much 4/24/2009

The food was tasty but not worth the money. I honestly just felt duped. I prefer Super Torta or any taco truck around, especially Torres De Morelos on Powell. Don't buy into the Hawthorne Hype! \r \r My entire meal was $19, and that is one drink, two tacos, and tip. The margarita was Fabulous, as it should have been for $8.50. That's why I give this place two stars.\r Pros: Great Margarita Cons: OVER priced more

Yummy 3/17/2009

Yummy food, everything looked and smelled great. I ordered chips and guac and black bean soup to go. All was delicious, just spicy enough and yum yum yummy. Also, coke in glass bottles from Mexico (with cane sugar, not high fructose corn syrup, more yum). Pros: black bean soup, chips and guac. Cons: busy, SLOW service, not particularly nice staff more

horrible food 3/2/2009

This is a review for the Hawthorne location. After the article in Food Weekly we decided to give it a try. Our first clue to not go should've been the fact that the article was more focused on the place trying to be Green instead of the food. It was horrible! To start off the place was very busy and we had to sit either outside (Brrr it's winter) or over by the bathrooms. We almost left without eating after we watched about 30 small flies crawl all over a box on the shelf above us. Hopefully this contained no food products. An employee grabbed us just in time to say a table was open in the main room if we wanted it. After squeezing my way in between another table (the place is very cramped) My food arrived, I had chicken tacos that had so much onion and cilantro on them you could not taste the chicken. I scraped most of it off to find a very very small portion of chicken. My husband had ceviche & carnitos tacos. He said the ceviche had no flavor at all but citrus (trust me he eats this quite often so he's aware of the need for lemon juice) the carnitos tacos had the same onion and cilantro and portion problem. The only things remotely edible at this place is the cheese quesadilla (if you don't like sour cream make sure to tell them it's covered in it) and the pomagranite margaritas. To top the whole thing off it's very pricey for mexican food $44 for 3 tacos, one quesadilla, 2 drinks and ceviche. Don't believe the hype about this place there is way better mexican food in portland like san fellipe (sp) in Sellwood- I'd take taco bell over this place any day. more

AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING! 2/22/2009

The best Margaritas in town!!!!!!!!!! This is the only place I would order a margarita. They know how its done. The food is amazing as well. Hand made tortillas and a variety of fresh salsas. There is not one thing on the menu that is bad. This restaurant is always consistent which is a huge plus in my book. Check it out for the fun atmosphere and delicious food. Pros: Margaritas, Tortillas, chips, salsa, value more

Thank God for good tacos in PNW 12/6/2008

We live near the Hawthorne location and all I can say is best taco place we have been to in the Pacific Northwest (which is not saying anything). Moved from California to Washington and was too close to the wrong border for good ""mexican"" food. Wasn't expecting that to change when we moved to Portland, but was pleasantly surprised by Por Que No. The pescado taco is good but I love the pollo asado tacos (pollo verde is pretty good too). The guacamole has been consistently good and the people are really nice. They had a creamy roasted poblano hominy soup a few weeks ago that was killer. Tuesday nights are .50 off tacos and 1.00 off guac and chips. Pros: POLLO ASADO more

Hum Drum 11/9/2008

Heard about this place, read the reviews re ""best tacos"", so we tried it yesterday. The tacos we ordered, pork and beef, were fresh and nice enough, but nothing to justify the hype. We also ordered a small simple salad, again fresh and good, and chips and salsa, very ordinary. The atmosphere was loud, cleanliness was below average, seating was uncomfortable unless you were a 1st grader who might actually fit into the pint size chairs and stools. This would not be the place to go out to dinner with a group as it was crowded and getting a table was ""outwit, outsmart."" They have little signs on the tables asking customers not to be seated until they order, which of course you don't see until you sit. I sat as my husband ordered and had this pointed out, but hey, por que no? This is no place I would go out of my way for, and will probably not bother returning. Pros: cheap Cons: atmosphere, service, noise level more

Most overrated taqueria in town! 10/31/2008

Why is this place so busy? The portions are tiny, the prices are high, and the service is appallingly slow. Its not a brand new place, but it's crusty with the grime of ages. The hipster-slacker workers lack any sense of urgency, and are too busy being cool to take your order properly. Who puts broccoli in the veggie mix for 'mexican' food, anyway? Is it for the sulfurous smell it adds when overcooked into a tamale? There is a generously stocked salsa and hot sauce bar, which you will need since everything they serve is so bland. Fermenting fresh pineapple doesn't enhance the fish tacos either, folks. Any given taco stand will provide better service and much better food for your time and money. You'll get to bus your own table either way. more

Pork si, beef no! 10/20/2008

loved the soft corn tortillas; carne asada was blah with no taste to the beef. The spouse thought the carnitas sauce overwhelmed the pork.. I thought it was fine. \r \r The place is grungy, funky, the music playing was '70's rock nostalgia and a tad loud. If you don't want a conversation, eat inside. Cons: too noisy; over priced more

Overpriced and pretentious food, cute staff though 10/20/2008

i really wanted to enjoy this place but I was let down. The food was bland and looked really pretty but small portions and way overpriced for what you get. The staff there is quite cute but, Man, 6 bucks for a tiny horchata with rum and you have to bus your own table, too! I can get better food for a better price from Cha cha cha!, La Sirenita, or La Bonita. I hate to play the race card also but not one of their staff is Latino and very few people of color were patrons... Hmmm. Pros: Cute staff Cons: Bus your own table, poor quality food, pretentious plating more

tasty, but not worth the SHARTZ 9/9/2008

have had so many pals tell me they love the place. i thought it was cute and trashy and i like that style! the food was good and the service sucked. its the kind of place that may as well be self service anyhoo so that is really a non issue, if you go here and complain about the service you are tarded! but the food gave me the shartz real bad!! look out for the squid...lol Pros: cool little trashy hole in the wall dive Cons: nasty case of the shartz more

A North Portland Surprise 9/6/2008

When a patient of mine recommended Por Que No--said she worked there and that it was amazing--I put it on my list, but didn't get there.. The when another patient of mine recommended it, we just had to try it. We were tired from a long work week, but when we got there, it was a real uplifting experinece. Felt like we were on a mini vacation. What a wonderful place. \r There were lots of menu choices. The variety of tacos we ordered, along with fresh and lovely pomegranate margaritas, were delicious. My favorite was the wild shrimp taco. Yum! There aren't a lot of tables, so you might have to queue up and wait. And on warm summer nights, there are many outdoor tables. \r Now, if you're looking for a fussy, fine-dining experience, Por Que No is not your destination. But if you're looking for an out-of-the-box, funky eatery in a lively and interesting neighborhood, get in the car. You won't be disappointed. Pros: Funky, off the beaten track, one of a kind eating experience Cons: Waiting in line? (But that must mean it's a favorite for many Portlanders--can't be that bad...) more

Tiny food and the wait time for 1 taco is over an hour 8/13/2008

We went there on a Sunday and it was reasonably crowded. We kept checking on our food... 20 minutes grow into 40 minutes then 60 and 1 hour and ten minutes. During this time, we got into a conversation with the group sitting next to us, they arrived before we did, and were STILL waiting for their food. Finally their food and our food arrive 1 hour 20 minutes later (for them) and 1 hour 10 minutes for us. Our order was incorrect. Instead of the plate we ordered, they brought us 1 taco. I explained to them that we had ordered a plate, and someone nastily came to our table telling us we owed more money! The whole group of us started laughing and told the waiter that we have been waiting over an hour... they didn't care, they wanted more money. I talked to the person who took our order, and they said we did not have to pay. It took us about 2 seconds to eat our food as it is so small (yet pricey). When we getting into our car, I noticed the nasty rude person who demanded more money from us had raced to our table and was looking at our receipt I guess to see if we were properly charged. The whole experience was so strange. I would NEVER EVER go back there and have let everyone I know about the ""experience"". more

""our little secret"" gone city-wide... 7/14/2008

My wife and I have lived a few blocks from what is now Por Que No for ten years (It was still Grandfather's Deli for the first few). When it opened, we checked it out immediately. The ambience is very comfortable, with GolTV on 24/7 and reggae music pulsing out of the speakers. The food is fresh and always delicious, and there are always specials and happy hour. They also have great mexican cervezas and margaritas. It is almost always my wife's first option when hungry. In fact, as soon as I complete this review, we are headed there! Don't hesitate, go there soon. Check out all of the other amazing things happening on North Mississippi Ave while you're there! Pros: great food and atmosphere, five blocks from my house Cons: everyone and their brother is starting to know about it (not really a con... I'm just selfish!) more

fabulous sangrias 4/24/2008

Love this place. I've been 3 times now; twice with my husband & once with my mom & sister. Their sangria recipe is the best I've had. Their guacamole is wonderful & the vegetarian tamales are delish. The people are friendly & seem to like where they work. It's a hole in the wall & people are drawn to it for good reasons. We'll keep coming back. Pros: awesome sangrias, upbeat atmosphere, great neighborhood vibe Cons: it's not in my neighborhood more
