I've been going to Pine tree for years. Usually I stop in on weeknights, and sometimes weekdays to get a bit of gas(I work close to Rt 1., which is where Pine Tree is located.)
Recently I went in to redeem a few bottles(we recycle at work) at Pine Tree in Kittery M.E. On 2 seperate occasions one day, I had to ask the associate at the register to help me with the machine. It was malfunctioning and needed maintnence. There were two other associates eating behind the register, not seeming too interested in helping with the machine. I had a small bag in one hand and asked the ringing associate if I could leave it for a moment while I ran to my car(while someone was supposed to be fixing the machine,) and she looked at me with disgust.
She proceeded to tell me "Why dont you just throw it away" and I explained I would like to redeem the other bottles when the machines fixed. Both her and the other two folks became extremly hostile towards me.
When I asked the manager if I could speak to or get the number of his boss, he assured me I wouldnt be getting that number, and they certainly would not give me his; he laughed at me.
I relize the young lady at the register and the other two associates probably were not trained in any kind of customer service, however the positions they all hold have them involved with the public. In my opinion, if your getting gas, or a snack and are in and out, it's fine; If your looking for anything beyond that, go somewhere else.
