Good times 6/8/2006

There's this bar in my neighborhood called the Phoenix that I very much enjoy. It's an Irish pub of sorts, with all kinds of neat things hanging on the walls and a warm, inviting feel. The place seems to always have just the right amount of people, never getting too crowded or too dead. It's the perfect place to go out with a few friends when you get a booth and chat. more

The Phoenix 5/19/2006

I was never good at telling if a bar was a real Irish bar or a fake Irish bar. Especially in Boston, my friends would always say, “We’re going to this great fake Irish bar tonight…” and I guess I should have asked exactly what that meant. Anyways, not sure what the Phoenix is. To their credit, the Mission District was the Irish neighborhood before it became the taqueria district. I’m guessing the Phoenix hasn’t been around that long though, so… well, it doesn’t really matter. They serve Guinness, whisky, and good Irish food like shepherd’s pie, stew and the likes. So, whatever my Boston friends might think, it’s cool with me. Not too many places you can get good bar food like this. more

Irish pub or great sports bar? It's both! 3/19/2006

This sweet little Irish bar is THE local Mission hangout for NFL season (or the sport of your choice) -- they have nearly every game on offer. The crowd is spirited, but laid-back and friendly with nary a knucklehead in the house like you may find at a larger sports bar. Which makes it worth the trip from another 'hood if you're looking for place to watch the game. The staff is sweet, if a bit distracted at times, and the food, Irish pub fare with a twist, is actually quite good. Saturday and Sunday brunch features everything from traditional Irish breakfast (for those who can stomach blood pudding) to all manner of benedicts and the Avoca vegetable hash -- a yummy mound of hash browns, sauteed veggies and goat cheese sauce. All their condiments are house-made (and delicious) and in the winter they offer tasty little nips like buttered rum and spiced brandy. more

great neighborhood bar 10/24/2005

i think this bar is heavily underrated. there are obviously plenty of places to eat and drink in the mission, but when i lived nearby, i found myself drawn to the phoenix more often than not. it's an irish pub, and they have some traditional pub fare that is quite good. they also have a very good happy hour with great prices on drinks and appetizers. the fries are excellent, and the chicken wings aren't bad. good selection of beers, and always some soccer playing on the tv. more
