SCAM ALERT: Beware of being charged a fortune! 6/6/2011

SCAM ALERT: I just had 5 men's dress shirts dry cleaned at Peninou. Total bill was $139.99. Yes - $28 per shirt for regular dry cleaning. I called to say this was ridiculous and asked what the standard fee is to dry clean a shirt. Answer: it varies by customer and no price list was available for customer service to refer to while we were on the phone.. Moral of the story: Stay far, far away... As far as I'm concerned, these people are just a bunch of scammers and I don't want their smell on my clothes! I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau asking for an apology from Peninou and a written promise stating that Peninou will cease such abusive billing practices. more

cleaner makes a difference 5/8/2010

Peninou French Laundry & Cleaners is on a bit more expensive than other cleaners, but overall, when I have something that I particularly care about, Peninou has reliably cleaned my clothes. Specifically, I take all of my white and tan pants to Peninou for dry cleaning. Other cleaners have returned my white pants looking a bit yellow, but Peninou has cleaned my whites looking as good as new -- stains gone with no yellow. Recently I had both a tan and white pants cleaned which had been soiled by greasy foods...stains completely gone and looking as good as new! Pros: quality work Cons: expensive more

our favorite cleaner 9/19/2008

This is not the place to take your $20 sweater. Go here for when you need your dress shirts to look perfect (they are hand-finished here) and that expensive silk party dress to look immaculate. I have brought them the oldest, ugliest stains and they get everything out. (If they cannot get it out, they will tell you.) Yes, you pay more but I have never had a problem in 6+ years and the staff is always friendly. Pros: you get what you pay for Cons: expensive more

Friendly service, nice people. Way over priced. 8/18/2008

I visited the store nearest my office on Laguna St. Great service, however, upon getting my bill for 9 items at nearly $158.00 was rather absolutely ridiculous. I know it is expensive to live in this city, but this has got to the biggest rip-off of all times. It is a ""French Cleaners"" maybe they sent them to France for cleaning. Who knows, I do know I will never go there again, nor would I recommend them. Pros: Friendly service. Cons: Way over-priced. more

Bait and switch - terrible customer service, exorbitant prices 5/21/2008

$180 for 2 slacks & 15 laundered shirts? 4/15/2008

Unlike some other reviewers, I've had fairly high quality results. However, the price is outrageous and the service (to echo others) has been marginal at best. One of the things that is most troublesome is that they refuse to tell you what it will cost when you drop it off (apparently they can call you later, but what do you do then?!). As far as I can tell, pricing is a completely arbitrary process when the clothes arrive at the plant (maybe not even legal). I've been charged $4 and $9 for two shirts that were nearly identical (I mean, a blue button down is a blue button down), yet they called one of them a ""sport"" shirt and thus justified the higher expense. Additionally, they are clearly charging different prices depending on the brand of shirt - case in point on last bill... white Neiman Marcus (Zegna) dress shirt over $8; white Nordstrom shirt: less than $5. If the scope of service is the same, why are they charging different amounts (again, is this even legal)? To protect themselves if something goes wrong I suppose. Anyway, it IS a total rip-off but until I find equal quality elsewhere, I feel stuck taking my better quality clothes to this place. Pros: They haven't destroyed anything Cons: Out of control EXPENSIVE and customer servies is marginal at best more

BAD SERVICE 4/4/2007

I was sorely disappointed with the service and the cleaning. When I walked in on Friday and requested my clothing be ready next Monday, I was never told that I would be incurring an ""Express 2-day service charge"". Then on Monday when the clothes were NOT READY for pick-up, they offered me 50% off. Great! However, when I came back again to get them, one blouse was NOT CLEAN but still cost $18! Then I was told that the 50% would be coming in the mail later (3-4 weeks). But, the corporate guy called us at home the next week to say that we should not have been offered this reimbursement and it would not be happening. He was totally unwilling to discuss how unreasonable this whole thing had become. For the EXORBITANT amount they charge, they should be providing much better service. They may be ""Eco-friendly"" but they sure are not friendly - go elsewhere. more

TOO EXPENSIVE 12/4/2006

I've been using them for a while for some of my special things, like coats, suede purces, dressy jackets and haven't had problems. However, recently I gave my evening dress to get it cleaned and they charged me a $100 for a dry cleaning. That's too much!!! At least they should have warned me how much would it cost in the beginning I might have bought a new dress. Pros: Remove even tough stains Cons: Too expensive, you can buy a new piece of clothing for that price more

worst of the worst 6/13/2006

This is the worst ripoff in the state. You are MUCH better off at any local corner cleaners. Peninou charges a fortune for the worst work. They constantly raise their already sky high rates and then lie when questioned about it. Stains never removed and overlooked. Creases never on target. Worse than average dry cleaning. The worst service of all would be their table cloths and especially their wedding dress services. Horrible and disrespectful staff and the worst management I have ever seen. The owner had a complete arrogant personality. His operations manager obviously knows nothing about how a good cleaners should be operated and makes one wonder if he has ever had ANY expirience with dry cleaning or in the management of a staff of any size, at all. Calling their customer service department with a problem is re-assuring for the most part, but one can even tell that the customer service representatives and thier manager lady have their hands tied with red tape of some sort. Forget calling about a problem with your account, the person that runs their accounting department must be completely inexpirienced with staff management too. 10 years ago Peninou was the best. Since the late '90s and currently they are the very worst. Everyone I know agrees. Cons: Everything more

A Fancy Address Doesn't Equal Quality Service 10/31/2005

In the last year Peninou has fallen on hard times. Poor quality control, no customer service, constant employee turnover,no response to reported problems, all at prices triple the competition. Imagine talking to four service reps, from the counter folk to a supervisor, then to a corporate customer service agent, each one maintaining that their prices had not increased, then being told ""oh, I guess they have.No one told me."" Wrinkled shirts at $4.20/per, extra charges for folding, boxes, and even for starch, and a customer service agents who don't return complaint calls or know the current pricing structure. The saddest part is that they WERE the best in the City. Pros: Location Cons: Customer Service, Quality Control, Management more

The best cleaner in the Bay Area 7/15/2005

My wife and I have been customers for three years. The store my wife bought her wedding gown recommended them. Yes, they are about 150% more expensive, but after dealing with one bad cleaner after another in the city, we finally gave them a try. You can't beat their men's shirt. Their Dry Cleaning is expensive, but they have gotten out every stain I have brought them. Their route drivers are very professional and courteous. They are willing to follow your directions. Sometimes the store service was slow, so we opted for home delivery. Pros: Quality, Convenient, Knowledgeable Cons: Expensive more

Not As Good As You Think 7/9/2005

We've been using Peninou for a while now, because of word-of-mouth that they are the best in the city. What we've found is that they do not pay tedious detail to the care of your clothing, which is what you expect for the price. 2 recent instances had a pair of casual mens pants come back with the 2 front creases (they didn't press over the manufacturer's crease, and it's nearly impossible to press out that extra crease), and an expensive laundered men's shirt came back with a rubbed white spot on the front (rendering it unwearable). When I inquired about their compensation policy on the latter problem, they first feigned ignorance, then said the manager wasn't in and there was nothing they could do. We're still trying to contact them to speak to a manager. more

not worth it! 1/20/2003

The attendants at this store need to check their attitude! It has been a long time since I was treated so poorly in a place of business...much less one that is supposed to provide me service. If they had done a phenomenal job or something out of the ordinary, then maybe I would consider changing my opinion, but after the mediocre job and snobbish treatment, I doubt you will ever find me there again...or any of my friends (who definitely can afford it). more
