There was FELA on Broadway but its FELASPIRATIONS still at 946 Fulton street Brooklyn where a new show on the impressions of this legend is going on this summer. You sure remember...

Pearl Market 6/25/2006

Pearl Market is the Chinatown equivalent of a shopping mall. Pearl Market a staple in chinatown and often browsed by tourits. While they do have the items that are touristy and cheesy they also have some really good steals and finds. They also have many items at some very cheap prices. more

Chinatown Department Store 5/21/2006

Pearl River is much more civilized than it used to be, now that it's moved to a new, clean, well-lighted space. That said, now that it's quasi-organized and isn't a dirty jumble, it's quite a bit less charming, and the bargains aren't as good. On the other hand, at least you can take your mom here now, and they do still have lots of cool, cheap things. Great if you need to get people some New York souvenirs and don't want to go into a horrible tourist shop. more

Pearl River Mart 3/30/2006

Pearl River Mart is located in the heart of New Yorks Chinatown and they have some great selections. They have two level giant floors filled with everything you from kimonos herbal aids to cool Asian foods to housewares. They have large tea selections and there are many funky knick knacks and novelty gifts. A very unique and inexpensive shopping mall and a great place to stock up on presents. more

Find Gifts For Everyone 3/23/2006

Pearl River Mart offers many oriental goods for your home and more. Prices range from cheap to moderate. They have a large selection of lamps and lanterns with many different shapes and sizes. There is also an extensive collection of teapot sets, china, and chopsticks. Oriental styles of clothing are also sold there. The best deal that I found was a letter opener that was in a shape of a samurai sword. It was only $3, was steel, and came with a case and stand. The lines are not too long if you pay downstairs. There are two floors to explore, so plan on shopping there for at least two hours. more

Fun and pricey at the same time 1/12/2006

I love to stop in at Pearl River Mart because I feel like I'm taking a trip to the orient. They have all kinds of good things for your home like housewears and furniture and bamboo plants and lanterns. Their prices are fair to expensive - you could probably do better in Chinatown but the merchandise is high quality and probably you're paying for the neighborhood rent. I highly recommend stopping in when you're around there. It's fun! more

Great to take tourist friends 12/8/2005

I love to take out of town friends here for an hour or two of browsing. It beats fighting your way around China town even if the prices may be a bit higher. The robes and dishes make great gifts and come in a variety of colors and styles. I also actually found a great deal on bamboo shades here. Plus they have a little tea/snack bar where you can rest and refresh. more

Love this store 10/22/2005

If you happen to have a spare day and you can't think of what to do with yourself, go to Pearl River and you will be able to spend the whole day browsing. You will find tons of great items for yourself and be able to shop for everyone on your Holiday gift list all at one store. more

asian goods 10/13/2005

This place has expanded rapidly during the years. It used to be a small store on Canal Street. At this location, they expanded their clothing section to include more variety in chinese wedding dresses and other types of outfits. Home furnishings are on every level, from rice paper lamps to bamboo baskets and kitchen ware. They have a great selection of boxed chinaware that are great for gift giving. Prices are fantastic, merchandise is always changing. Always a great place to kill time. more

This place is little a little trip to Asia 10/6/2005

It's a lot of fun to shop through Pearl River Mart. Their two floors are packed with great stuff for your home or gifts. Beautiful bamoo flower pattern dishes, potted plants, fans, paper lanterns, samurai swords - all this can be found within the store. The prices are not really cheap, but the merchandise is of good quality. Oh, I almost forgot: they have furniture too! more

Interested in Asia 10/6/2005

At its new location in Soho, Pearl River Mart offers everything that you can associate with Asia. A true Asian store, it sells products that not even Chinatown may carry. They offer a range of kay pole (traditional Chinese dress) in a variety of color. There must be one that you would like. As well, they carry tradtional chinese slippers, dishes, umbrellas, toys, food, papers, etc. Well, lets just say, if youre looking for something traditional Asian, this is a one stop shopping destination. more

I'm feeling Japanese 9/21/2005

Consider this place the oriental version of a shopping mall only with better prices and more oriental knick knacks. They have great gift items that are cheaply priced and often very kooky and original. I love coming here to buy gigapets for my cousins. They also sell these great rose and sandalwood scented soaps wrapped in beautiful oriental wrapping for a dollar. more

Nice Chinatown Institution 9/19/2005

Pearl River Mart is truly a wonderful place to shop for all those nick nacks that you would expect to find in Chinatown as well some slightly higher end items like tea kettles. I agree that the new location is not as good but it still is a neat place to visit that my wife is irresistable drawn to. Even if she does not buy, she come out of the store happier for seeing what they have there - like a Chinatown window shopper. more

Not as dusty as it used to be, but just as much fun 8/20/2005

The earlier incarnation of the Pearl River Mart was a few blocks down Broadway in Chinatown, and years away in ambiance. It was a well known secret among, well, those who know all the secrets. You went up a flight of stairs and stumbled into what seemed like a Chinese supermarket undisturbed (and undusted) for decades. There were noodles and tea and condiments and cookies and other comestibles impossible to determine, their labels bearing no english except the requisite label indicating how many calories and grams of fat they might include. There were row upon row of tea pots and sake sets, the ceiling was hung with paper lanterns and umbrellas, and the aisles were too narrow for two people to negotiate. Flash forward to the new Pearl River Mart, a well-lit, multi-level emporium selling the same stuff but with a dash of marketing savvy and, no doubt, a serious consultation with a feng shui master. The front of the store is a sea of brightly colored silk and rayon clothing for the whole family liberally dotted with accessory tables. Downstairs the food and lanterns and umbrellas and china via for attention with portable fountains, baskets, slippers. It's packed on weekends but worth a little jostling if your taste runs to origami colors and Asian spice. more

serves different audiences 8/17/2005

On the one hand, Pearl River Mart sells Westernized Chinese souvenirs, including traditional dresses and decorations with Chinese calligraphy, to tourists in Soho. On the other hand, it offers Hello Kitty cushions and the like to teenager girls with native Asian hearts. This is a good place for gifts. It also has some cute lamps. more

Awesome, but used to be even awesomer 8/16/2005

Pearl River mart has lots of Chinese products, including food, teas, dishes, clothes, kitchen supplies, etc. It used to be a real Chinese department store and it was really fun to go up its crowded floors at canal and broadway. Now they have a huge spacious store and some of the same products, but none of the charm and none of the Chinese customers. Its still inexpensive and still has some good stuff. more

Many products 8/16/2005

Pearl River offers an assortment of imported Asian products. Everything from clothing, to stationary, and even ancient weapons. This is probably the biggest well known shop for imported Asian products here in New York City. If you like collecting such products, this is the place to be. They have two locations, one in broadway and the other in Canal Street. Both are tourist districts so expect it to be crowded. The prices might be slightly higher too due to the tourist volume, but that's only my guess. more

Chinese goods at a good price 8/15/2005

Located in Soho, this big retail store carries goods from China and Japan. From Pocky and Pucca chocolate snacks, to fancy lamps, herbal aids, novelty gifts, kitchenware, tea, condiments, and traditional Chinese silk robes. You'll find everything here. The price is reasonable and they do have a return policy. The store is always packed with customers but they have two cashier counters so there is hardly any waiting time. more

Asian Goodies 8/15/2005

I know that there are at least two levels to look at. It's a big, wide open space which is very inviting from the outside. A lot of the stuff are Asian items from the clothing to the furniture. They sell baskets, wind chimes, incense, slippers, candy and little porcelain dolls. It's fun to look at all the different things they have. more

Chinese Department Store 8/14/2005

Pearl River Mart is an excellent place to wander and an unexpectedly great place to buy staples for the home regardless of whether or not you're Chinese. While upstairs you find the obligatory array of silk brocade, chopsticks, and ramen, downstairs is a treasure trove of kitchen supplies and home accessories (everything from wall hooks to clocks). It's also a great place to buy shoes -- they've got every kind of slipper imaginable, a nice selection of flip-flops, even cheap galoshes. Home stuff aside, PRM is a great place to pick up unusual (and inexpensive) gifts, especially if you need hostess gifts whlie traveling. Definitely an experience and worth checking out. more

It's a Heaven for Culture 8/12/2005

I love absolutely everything in this amazing store. Too bad it's a bit too pricey for me, personally. But you can find anything you could possibly want to show off your asian ethnicity here. Beautiful lamps to wonderful ancient instruments. They have ancient Chinese dresses and furniture. It's a beautiful place to shop and you can always find a little something for yourself. more

  • The Scene
You can get lost for days in this Chinatown megastore's two floors, which contain everything from wifebeaters to megaphones to "Hell Money" (kind of like play money except it somehow involves going to Hell).

    The Goods
Where else can you get paper lanterns, emerald green cheongsams, bamboo window shades, beaded flip-flops, baby-sized Bruce Lee outfits, jumbo jars of Ovaltine, lipstick cases, or a sake set with a cute picture of a bloated fish? Pearl River sells all this and more, at rock-bottom prices. Personal recommendations: Pick up some of the delicious hot roasted green peas (mmmm ... wasabi) and the Janlibo "energy drink," the best hangover cure known to man.
