They need to get rid of that old bartender with tattoos that screws almost every chick that comes in!!! He's dirty!

Tasty food and great location 7/22/2011

McGoverns is the best place to go downtown around the xcel center to get a drink and some tasty bar food. The place is huge so even when it's crazy busy you can usually find a seat. Some of the staff is better than the others but that goes for anywhere and I like the atmosphere at this place. more

Great Staff, Great Food, Great Place!! 7/19/2011

I hosted a private party at McGovern's and could not have been more pleased!!\r The staff was always friendly and prompt to answer any questions or address any concerns that I had.\r I wanted the party on the patio but the day of the party it rained so we moved it to the upstairs... It was a great space! TV's for the guys to watch the game, very spacious and very private! There were also darts and other games that my guests enjoyed while taking advantage of the full bar!\r I read through some of the other reviews and was sad to see some that were not so great, but then I looked at the dates on them and thought, if that is how McGovern's used to be... they have done a complete 180 because I have no complaints from the staff to the food or the space we used. \r As far as private parties usually go, I had a pretty small budget so with McGoverns great prices it was easy to stay within the budget I set.\r I do not visit McGoverns weekly or even monthly but the times that I have been there (a handful of times in the past year) I have had a great time.\r I laugh at the bartender comments... if you dont like someone or have an opinion about them or what they do, that is fine... but to put it on the web like that is just childish - in my opinion. :-) more

I highly recommend! 9/4/2009

Whether I go to McGovern's on a night where there is a event at the Excel or a night with no event, I have always recieved awesome service from both the servers and bartenders. Great variety of food on the menu as well, I have yet to order something I did not like. Beer selection is good and also there are some fun drinks to be ordered too! For everyone that has complained about it being busy there which results in 'bad' service-McGovern's must be doing something right if they pull in the crowds time and time again. I'll gladly take slower service when it's packed. It is to be expected. I've never had an empty glass, even if it's crowded. Keep up the great work! Pros: Great service, great food, great atmosphere Cons: None. more

1 star isn't low enough for this type of service 3/18/2009

My friends and I attended this bar on st. patrick's day and had a horrible experience. We were kicked out of the bar for no valid reason. We were sitting in our booth minding our own business and the bouncers kept telling us that we had to move because we were in there way. They kept telling us this because a girl that assaulted my friend earlier in the night was also there and she had them do this to us. I understand that they can refuse service to anyone, but this type of behavior is very unprofessional. These types of establishments do not deserve to be in business and I urge everyone to get their drinks elsewhere. DO NOT GIVE THIS BAR YOUR BUSINESS Pros: non Cons: insane bouncer staff more

good food 1/3/2009

Food here was good. Service was great. Nice bartenders. Not such a big fan of the layout, It can be hard to get around when it is busy... Pros: location, food Cons: sometimes a bit tight on space. more

Service is terrible 99% of the time! Hire a professional staff! 11/13/2008

McGovern's service is terrible 99% of the time. If you want good bar food they do have it. I probably eat there once a week and have been a customer for years, my excuse for the repeat business is that I only live a block away and it is a good place to catch a game. Summers on the patio are good when you can get a seat, but the service is even worse out there.\r \r It is understandable that when you are busy it is going to be slow especially when there is an event at the Xcel, but when it slows down the servers seem to get complacent, and have absolutely no sense of urgency. I guess they can afford to have bad service because they have a very good location, they could make alot more money if they had a professional staff though. Pros: Location, good place to watch a game Cons: Their service is horrible!!! more

Ick! 8/25/2008

I would have given this a 1/2 star had one been available but since one is the lowest, here it is. The name McGovern's implies ""Irish"" but there is nothing Irish about the menu which includes Gyros and wrap sandwiches. Despite this, I was still hoping for some semblance of authenticity. I ordered the Fish and Chips. Oh my goodness, I have never had to use the vinegar and tarter sauce to COVER the flavor of the pre-breaded fish. It had a hard, unpleasent texture that no amount of condiments could disquise. We asked the server why a chef would think it was ok to put his name on pre-made frozen fish fillets and she answered ""It isn't up to the chef, it is the owner's decesion."" To the chef at Patrick McGovern's: Run!\r \r There is a a brigtside, we went in the middle of the afternoon and found the service to be friendly and prompt (although one buser was on his cell phone). However, if its a good meal you crave, avoid McGovern's Pros: Fast service got us out of there in a hurry Cons: Don't go expecting Irish cusine or good food for that matter more

They would rather have your $10 than make you happy :( 7/13/2008

I guess it's true about the three most important things in business ""Location, location, location"", for this place seems to have nothing else to offer. I suppose once they got the spot so close to the Excel Center, they figured ""that should be enough, who cares about the food"". If you just want to get drunk, I guess you might not care; but if you are looking to dine, go to Arby's. Pros: It's close to the Excel Center Cons: Might get a better value in the stands than here. more

Great food and friendly employees 3/1/2008

If you like Thanksgiving Turkey dinner you have it here 365 days of the year. Best real turkey in the country. Great selection of beers. The entire menu if great. Crowded during X Cel events, but the speed of service is still great. Hands on owner. Forget the chain restaurants and head down to West 7th and Chesnut. Great Sunday brunch. A must place to visit!! more

$$$$$$$$$$$$ for beer 2/24/2008

after spending $22.50 on 2 pitchers on domestic beer the bartender had the nerve to ask me for the tip, she was a 45 year old lady who should not be doing that work for obvious reasons. Very very spendy and not that great of service, so i rec cossetas more

Is There Any Service in the Bar..... 7/21/2007

Now, I'll give him a break. He was tending bar and working the whole bar area, but let's get more help in the bar area. All the tables were full as was the bar...Had a couple of drinks, would have liked more, but couldn't get him to take our order. Had some appetizers and they were spotty. Irish Fries = excellent, bad 'marinara' sauce, Nachos = AWFUL! I can make better in my microwave at home or get better at the dome, Artichoke Dip = marginal, thick and rich - a little much for my taste. I would return for food, but not happy hour. It was disappointing as the paddy'o seems nice, although it was raining the day we were there. Pros: Parking, Ample Menu Selection Cons: Service more

Concerts 5/6/2007

We LOVE going to McGoverns for concerts, though it is busy , it is a great time and a great bar! Plan accordingly. I love the fact that they place the music of the headliner at the Xcel, looking forward to Billy Joel, at your bar!\r Colleen, mpls..... more

A Great Place to Hang Out ANY TIME 1/4/2007

In response to Patrick McGovern's review by daddyo1977: \r Patrick McGovern's Pub is a great place to come for events and for your everyday hangout. During events, though happy hour is not available, prices are definitely NOT inflated. ""Event"" beers are poured as 20 ounce beers instead of the traditional 16 ounce pour, which is something we offer as a little perk on event nights. The increase in price is $.50, which is definitely not an inflated price for 4 ounces more beer than you'd get on a regular basis. Go check out McGovern's Pub any day or any time! See you there! Pros: Plenty of space; a fit for all ages more

Don't go when anything is going on in the Xcel! 4/18/2006

We went for a Happy Hour on a Friday. I asked the waitress what the happy hour special was and she told me that she thought that there wasn't any happy hour b/c of something going on at the Xcel. The event turned out to be a boy band concert. Mcgovern's took advantage of this and charged us ""event "" prices that were inflated from their everyday prices. I was evident that none of the patrons on the patio were there for the event. She then added a gratuity based on the inflated prices. Wouldn't go if there is anything going on at the Xcel. Pros: Patio, Location Cons: Prices more

Great Lunch 9/22/2005

Stopped in for lunch and everything looked delicious! Had a wrap which was great but quickly found out I ordered the wrong item... everyone was eating the hot turkey! Will definitely go back for that and one of their many beers. Pros: Huge Menu, Pub Feel Cons: Hamm's posters? more

User review by sonjeroo 8/11/2005

I had an absolutely terrible experience here. The service was terrible. We left after an hour and a half because our food still wasn't ready yet and the server was just a jerk about it. Terrible place. more

Remains untainted by large crowds 6/29/2005

Patrick McGovern's has the downside of being located in St. Paul and not being on Grand Avenue. If you, or anyone in your crowd of friends wants to go for a quiet drink and watch TV, McGovern's is for you. It is still largely untainted by the large noisy college and young adult crowd merely because its poor location and lack of nearby bars adequate to hop to. McGovern's food is a bit pricey but is acceptable if you're willing to shell out the dough. The drinks are ok and there is a large selection, especially if you like shots. The service is good and you will rarely ever miss your server. Go to McGovern's if you want a quiet atmosphere, which can be both its greatest strength and most crippling flaw as well. Pros: Quiet, Variety of drinks, Good after work Cons: Quiet, No good bars around, Not remotely romantic more

very cozy 10/20/2002

The junk food was first rate and everything looked tasty that passed our table. The waitress was a bit artificial and lacked a sense of humor, but nevertheless the televisions are large and they even changed the channel for me. My remarks apply to the upstairs portion: I will try the downstairs next time. Pros: food, televisions, atmosphere more
