Editorial review from Citysearch 7/18/2014

Cramped, disorganized and dirty. In the 'section' where books regarding Buddhism are kept (next to 'occult' for some reason) there are multiple volumes marked by the publisher 'for free distribution, not for sale' and when this was politely brought to the proprietor's attention she let it be known that she doesn't care. To some this is the moral equivalent of selling Gideon Bibles. So it's charming, but charming in the way a real estate agent might use the word to sell a dilapidated shack in a bad neighborhood. I can think of no reason to patronize this establishment. more

Would love to support my neighborhood 12/21/2011

Would love to support my neighborhood ""little guy,"" but this place is always a disaster. Yard-sale-quality selection, dirty and poorly organized, laughably high prices, and an attitude as if I'm being an enormous bother every time I've ventured to ask a question of the clerk, the few times I've stopped in over the past few years while out walking my neighborhood. A consistent disappointment. With Powell's less than a mile away on Hawthorne, they need to offer better quality and service! I'm guessing they make most of their money from mail-order, because it is not an enjoyable shopping experience in person... Sad. more

I love Paper Moon books. Entering it is like entering a refuge: a cozy, peaceful space stuffed with treasures. Time falls away; it?s a wonderful place to browse. Best yet is the owner, an extremely knowledgeable, helpful woman always happy to be of help and interested in her customers lives and stories. more

Fly Me to the Paper Moon 1/13/2010

I've been a customer of this store since the late 70s and keep coming back, both for visiting and for bookshopping. From my 6-volume Gibbon I bought 20 years ago to the spot of pleasantry today, I've continued to be satisfied. Andrea goes miles out of her way to provide the most obscure printed matter, take it from a long-time happy customer! more

Kind of Crushed Out On This Store 1/11/2010

Andrea Drinard and her Paper Moon Bookstore just charmed the literary pants off me! Her place is totally overflowing with carefully selected titles. She really seems to have an excellent sense of what will be most interesting, and, by taking the time to get to know me, she always seems ble to steer me toward what suits my most current interest. Really, I could just talk to her for an afternoon, but I don't want to take up her time. I guess her internet business is going great guns, which is fine. I like to think of the whole world having access to this shop. I wish the world was full of unique shops like this. Alas, they seem ever more rare; all the more reason to support this one! more

Beware: look before your buy 5/7/2007

I located this bookseller through ABEBOOKS and purchased two books from them that were described as first editions in vg/near fine condition in like dustwrappers. I paid for the books, as always, by credit card before receiving the books. When the books arrived I was very disappointed as neither was a first edition nor were they or the dustwrappers in anything like vg/near fine condition. I contacted the owner, Andrea (forgotten her surname), about the poor state of the books and received a curt reply. I wanted to return the books, but despite repeated attempts never received acknowledgment from the owner to the effect that they would refund the cost of the books plus postage in each direction. Unfortunately, airmail postage from New Zealand to the US was more than the total cost of the books (airmail postage from NZ to most foreign destinations is prohibitively expensive). Thus, I was left in the situation of having to keep both books, neither of which I would have purchased had I see more

wow! 11/11/2005

This small and unassuming shops has some great little secrets hidden inside. I found a OED in excellent condition (complete with little drawer and original magnifying glass) being offered at half the price those of lesser condition are going for at the bigger independent bookstore in town. The books in the front of the store are a bit sun faded, but still make great reading copies. comparable prices. PROS: surprises. CONS: somewhat limited selection more
