Service is key. And the service here is very rude, neglectful, impatient and paternalistic. As a beginner, but a skillful diver who learns quickly, I went to the shop looking for expert opinion and advice so I could make informed decisions about expensive purchases. The owner has been consistently dismissive, disinterested in answering beginner's questions, and on more than one occasion, has insulted me - barely letting me finish a sentence before cutting me off to explain that I should listen to him because I am "ignorant," and "doing it wrong," and he proclaims, "I have only been doing this for 40 years, so I guess I know what I'm talking about." I recommend other NYC dive shops before you go to this one. I found the owner's attitude not worth battling again. So now I shop and try things on at Pan Aqua because it is close to me, but I actually buy my items elsewhere. A staffer named Lorraine who works there is wonderful on the other hand, but I don't frequent the shop because encounters with the owner are so unpleasant and i don't want to give him my business.
Pros: Lots of equipment, convenient location, experienced stafff
Cons: consistently rude service by owner
