FUN PLACE! 4/29/2011

This place is more fun. Its defiantly a portland style hole in the wall from its location to its decorations inside. The staff is very nice and know german. The Menu is fun with things like rare green ice cream made from a flower to pickle soup! despite the funkiness the food is MUCH better than i imagined and defiantly worth going out of my way to get again. Great for first dates or people visiting out of town and want to KNOW Oregon. the beer isn't super fantastic but your in Oregon! if you want a good beer go to a brewery like raccoon Lodge! more

Better than Expected 8/23/2009

If you are looking for fine dining, this is not the place. But to get a great meal, good service and value, this is as good as it gets in Portland. The Soup is unique, and the menu has enough choices to suit just about anyone. I can't imagine why someone would have taken issue with cost, or why another reviewer who says they are Bavarian (doubtful) would not like the food. Personally, I don't need PC decor to enjoy my meals. Pros: Inexpensive and casual Cons: Parking more

I like this place 10/12/2008

I love getting 2+ vegies with my meal, I love the dill pickle soup, the liver and onions are usually great, I like the variety and choices. Great desserts too Pros: food, friendliness, funk Cons: slow service--but they're sweet more

Disappointment 9/24/2008

I am actually coming from Germany (Bavaria) and I knew I had to keep my expectations at bay but this Restaurant was on of the biggest disappointments ever !\r We were sitting in a side room which was horribly painted with a Bavarian landscape. The beer was fresh but no head ! German beer needs a head. I was told to eat the pickle soup which is definitely NOT a German tradition and it was cold and just dire.\r I ordered a ""Rahmschnitzel"" (pork schnitzel) with a creamy sauce. The meat was not of very high quality and it was very little for 12 bucks. It was just greasy and with some imagination I was able to guess that this was cooked with German inspiration.\r The place itself was just of the road in the basement and it really felt like a basement dive bar to me. All the tacky wanna be German elements in there were just relentless.\r I know you never get it a 100 percent authentic but this place is just delivering a soulless performance and I am feeling ashamed that this place calls itself Bavarian restaurant.\r I would have given no stars at all but the lowest you can do here is one star and that one is actually for the nice service. Surprisingly he was speaking German as well ! Pros: Nice service Cons: Everything else more

Authentic and nice! 4/30/2008

As a person born and raised in the South of the German speaking Area of Europe, I must say: great food, great service, authentic dishes, and reasonable prices. A place where the Southern German food is cooked by people who were born and raised in Southern Germany obviously has a big advantage over other Restaurants where the cooks, not being born and raised in Southern Germany, may have a hard time knowing what the food should actually taste like, or what temperature the beer and the wine should be served at: the best German Eatery in the Portland area.

Great German Food 10/28/2007

The food is beyond compare, made fresh and the service friendly. You can't go wrong with anything on this menu and the Dill Pickle Soup defies description. It's probably addictive! Pros: Service and taste Cons: parking a bit tight more

great dinner 8/23/2007

my wife and i had a great meal at this little german gem. I cannot wait to go back. the quaint family atmosphere and top notch food reminds me much of the germany that i remember from when i was a child. Pros: great food more

Best and freshest German food in town 7/15/2007

My husband is German, and we travel there to visit relatives every other year. The food at Otto and Anita's is truly authentic and always delicious. The service is friendly and helpful--if a bit slow at times. The fresh green salads before your entree are very different with lovely homemade dressings, and the delicious German wines are not found elsewhere in this area. You will find a wonderful welcoming ambiance at Otto & Anita's that will have you returning again and again !! Pros: fresh salads, authentic german dishes , great wines Cons: service can be slow at times more

Best German in Town! 5/20/2007

Awesome German food; my boyfriend is from Germany, and he swears by Otto and Anita's. You have to try the dill pickle soup! There is also this German ice cream there... I cannot remember the name, but it is green. AMAZING! Pick up some pastries on the way out as well; well worth it. Pros: Incredible Food more

Delicious, friendly atmosphere, good family restaurant 3/25/2007

I will not say this place is an authentic German place, because I have never been to Germany. However, they have awesome food and honestly, that is all I could ask for. Husband, children and I all have been a couple of times and have tried different things. The spatzle is awesome, and you must try the green ice cream. I believe it is Waldmeister, but not positive. Can get a bit pricey, but so can everywhere else. Pros: Good food, good for families, nice environment Cons: Maybe not authentic (see previous review) more

Great food, very friendly restaurant with excellent customer service 12/21/2006

This is a first time review, but a well-deserved one for Otto and Anita's. While they specialize in German food, they have many offerings that should satisfy everyone's palate. Their Chicken Fettucine Aldredo has a light, creamy sauce and noodles cooked to perfection. The Steak Diane is so tender, you can cut it with a fork and the Jagerschnitzle has a mushroom sauce that enhances the pork and spaetzle that accompanies the dish. Otto can turn an ordinary carrot into a rich and buttery side dish that never fails to please. In addition to the wonderful main dishes, Anita's bakery offerings are some of the best I've ever had. Her Tiramisu cake is chocolaty with just the right touch of marscapone and her coconut cake is light and fluffy. Perfect! We eat there as often as we are able to. And best of all, the dill pickle soup--always a favorite. I highly recommend this restaurant. Pros: The food! What more can I say? It's excellent. Cons: Parking when it's crowded can be difficult. more

This place touched unsere Herzen! (that's legal in Oregon) 12/2/2006

We arrived at Otto & Anita's on a chilly Saturday night and from the moment we entered we felt nothing but warmth at this restaurant. Okay, the walls are covered with kitschy murals, and the ficus plants seemed a little out of place, but as soon as our waiter welcomed us we started smiling -- he would throw in a smattering of German, enough to make anyone think they knew the German language. We got the curry schnitzel special and the Oktoberfest sampler -- both were very tasty, just the right quantity. The wine and beer totally h it the spot. This is the ultimate comfort food, but it was the service that made Otto and Anita's great. \r \r We will definitely return, and next time we will bring along a crowd. Pros: Yummy food, attentive and humorous service Cons: Not sure what planet the other customers came from more

Not German 7/28/2006

No self respecting German would ever visit this restaurant and declare he had just tasted a bit of Germany. Can you imagine a German restaurant without a preminum German beer??????? It was on the menu ie Spaten Pils--------- BUT------They were OUT!!!!!!!!!! Can you imagine?? Out on a Saturday night????? I ordered Jagerschnitzel, Pork, which came with spatzle. The Pork was tough, almost unchewable and the Spatzle was BURNED. I can't believe it. Why didn't I walk out??? Because I'm German and in Germany we just don't go back. more
