Ohhh the Memories 8/9/2009

Good: The building, the ice cream, the service, watching the people coming for a special treat, mmmmmmm the ICE CREAM!. Bad: I REALLY can NOT think of anything I did or do not like. Too many Wonderful memories.. Improvements: An ORC in Colorado Springs!. Other: My father won a malt machine from ORC -when the store was first opened. Our Dad and Mom took us often as kids. We took our kids - even though we live in Colorado Springs. When we visit the family we all go for a Rainbow Cone. And we have taken our GRANDkids too. NOW our daughter lives and works in downtown Chicago and called me so excited as ORC is going to be just a few blocks from her job on Randolph. I pray our GRANDkids will be taking their GRANDkids some day. Keep the MMMMMMMMemories happening! Thanks!. more

Brings back memories! 5/27/2006

I found their rainbow cone brings back memories for me. I remember my Dad making Sunday night a special one to go there. Just to watch them layer the cone was exciting. I believe there is (was) another store in Palos but not sure if it's the same owner. I can taste all those delicious flavors now. more

Can't put my finger on it but....... 4/14/2006

This ice cream shop has something that is truly unique. I first became aware of them while at the Taste of Chicago. I ordered a taste portion and fell in love!!! At first glance, I thought that the multi colored ice cream that was served to me was going to taste like a standard sherbet, but boy was I WRONG! The taste was unbelievable. Each color had a different flavor and it was chock full of surprising add ins. I bit into chunks of fruit and nuts that gave it a unique flair. I finished my taste portion and immediately got back into line to get a full size cone. I could not stop thinking about that cone and looked them up. I was elated when I realized that they had a brick and mortar shop and decided to check it out. I was shocked to see such a large crowd waiting in line. I think that there icecream is the most unique that I have ever had!!!! more

I see you see we all taste icecream 1/14/2006

The Original Rainbow Cone is air conditioned in the summer and heated in the winter. They have a great purifier system so you're breathing in fresh air all the time. It's pack in the summer. There is free parking, but sometimes you'll be waiting in line for a cone. Ice Cream is very cheap, very good, and well churned. Brings lots of friends and it's great comfort food. more

Lines out the door 1/13/2006

The ice cream at this shop is fabulous. They have a lot of flavors, and it's so delicious. The prices are average for a high-quality ice cream shop, and you wont' regret it if you come here, except if you have to wait a long time. We came after 4th of July one year, and it took forever to get a cone. Kids got tired of waiting. more

Nothing like it!!! 9/13/2005

Not a thing has changed here, the rainbow cones have remained the same after MANY years and there is a good reason for that, they are the best cones around! They have added more variety to their menu (all good) but you will see 90% with the rainbow cones. People in line are interesting to talk to also as most have been coming here for generations! more

Original Rainbow Cone 8/22/2005

To many Chicagoans, the Original Rainbow Cone is just a stand at Taste of Chicago. Those people have no idea what they're misisng. Original Rainbow Cone is actually a (mostly) year-round ice cream shop in southwest Chicago. It is well worth the trip, even from the north side, to have a delicious rainbow cone or other ice cream treat. The shop itself is air conditioned and has lots of outdoor seating, including under the awning in back. There is free parking, but be prepared for a quick line to get ice cream if you're there on a hot day. Also, call ahead for the hours--they close at 9 during the winter and 10:30 during the summer, but I've made the trek there only to discover they were closed. more
